That is true. Nation Building just doesn't cut it. Sort of like Social Networking.
That seems rather a self-referential criticism, Brenda?

Brenda - OK, I accept I might have drawn a sweeping one-size-fits-all conclusion about carrying guns in USA.

The gambling thing makes perfect sense actually. Online gambling would divert profits from the huge live casino industry.
With hindsight, the irony is that while RL laws in USA were stopping SL residents from wasting a few L$ in virtual slot machines, the big RL banks were well on course for fluttering away billions!

I never said our politicians weren't idiots. Sen Barney Frank is the proponent of the bill, and he has been at the wheel of the banking fiasco for quite some time....go figure.

Best I can tell, the original does not specifically mention any countries, just makes a lot of statements that imply it relates to the US:

http://loriborgman.com/The_Death_of_Common_Sense.html

Many sources confirm that that is the original writing of it.
From: Pserendipity Daniels
Yep - the original criticises (British) interference in another (US) country.

Pep (I agree with it)
I see now - you were referring to the book "Common Sense" rather than this "Death of Common Sense" newspaper article. Gotcha

That sounds as useful a warning as you'll find on a cup of McD's coffee: "May contain hot liquid".

It will be noon tomorrow, SLT...

Mine was off by seven hours. I blame the Duncan/Spike mush notes.

Of course the RL banks were acting at the orders of the government. For the past 20 years there has been a drive to increase home ownership. To the point that requirements of down payments and documents proving income were not required. These loans were the epicenter of the current crisis.

That's why it makes all the preening and screeching all the more comical, especially coming from Barney himself. They are outraged over their own handiwork.

im not so sure ny city gun laws are representative of the usa overall. outside a few crime havens, i was always under the impression the difficult gun licenses were for carrying _concealed_ weapons.
practicalities aside, would it generally be legal to strap a hunting rifle to your back and walk around the streets? i have vivid memories of gun swap meets and the like in the usa. i also remember there being guns everywhere i looked. visible in vehicles as well.

Don't know where you traveled in the US Nina, but other than living in Florida, I've never seen a gun visible in a car anywhere, let alone anywhere else.

New York City's gun laws are probably the strictest in the nation, they even go beyond New York State's laws. They all vary from state to state, like I said, having a gun in your home is about a difficult as getting a driver's license, it is the carrying of a concealed weapon that is the trick. Also, there is a difference between "carrying" which usually means a loaded, concealed handgun, ready to use, and "transporting' say to a hunting ground or shooting range, which any licensed gun owner can usually do as long as the weapon is unloaded and locked away, but even then , some states actually require the weapon be in view in the vehicle when transporting. It all depends on where you live.

When I was in High School, just about every farm boy that drove a pickup had a gun rack with one or two rifles on the back window. Even when the truck was sitting in the school parking lot. No one thought anything about it.

yes, but we are talking 'generally'. practical ramifications aside (unwanted police attention) is it legal to walk down the street with a rifle slung over your shoulder? do people not drive around with their guns proudly displayed in their rear window?

That is totaly un-American. Just how do you think you are going to be able to do your civic duty and file a lawsuit if you do not look to verify whether or not the coffee cup, that feels very very hot to your hands, has a statement on it warning you that it is hot.

Damn, I forgot again. I constantly have to remind myself to throw personal ethics out the window and not actually accomplish anything.

Not in NY or NJ. Just my personal experience. Never seen it ever. And I think if someone was walking around with a rifle slung over their shoulder around here, many people would find the nearest police officer and they'd whisk them away in a heartbeat. 9/11 and all, you know? People are now kind of more in the "see something say something" mode. Let alone Columbine, and other mass shootings. etc.

It depends, many states do respect the right of a citizen to openly carry a firearm. They also tend to have lower crime rates than more restrictive places. Legally, I could strap on a handgun and walk down the street where I live. Growing up it was very common to see 13 year old boys walking along the road carrying a shotgun or .22 rifle. Carrying in vehicles is quite common. But unless you are on your way to the range or to hunt, it is usually better to have the weapon out of plain sight, just so your window doesn't get busted in.
