In a lot of the farming and ranching areas, you will still see quite a few pickups with gun racks - though, not so much in school parking lots anymore due to all the school shootings over the last dozen years.

Outside of that, I think most guns are kept in the homes (except for the gang bangers). It is a very small percentage of folks that go thru the hassle of getting a Concealed Carry permit - I do have one.

It depends on what State you live in. In New York and New Jersey, No. it is not allowed.

Do you have to show a cause or need for it, or just jump through hoops? Here you pretty much have to prove your life is in danger out there, or carry large some of money or other valuables, like a diamond merchant. Otherwise, it is virtually impossible to get a carry permit.

And you were probably safer walking down the street in one of these places were guns are common than you would be in Chicago, New York, or DC.

And in large cities, it would be highly suspicious to see someone carrying a gun. There is no reason to have one other than causing trouble. You sure aren't hunting for anything in Newark which I'm aware of, other than a crappy apartment

i saw this sort of thing in oregon and washington. the further you got from seattle or portland the more frequent it became. by the time you were 30 minutes out of town every other pickup had a proud display of weapons in the window. the highway signs were even riddled in bulletholes.

newark... new york... new jersey... florida... i think its an east coast/west coast divide.
seattle and portland are not small towns, yet it wouldnt be very shocking to see some guy drive through with rifles hanging in his rear window.
they do this EVERYWHERE in idaho, and northern california isnt so different either.

Yes, some Western States do tend to have more liberal gun laws, due in part to their setlement heritage. The Eastern States tend to be run by "Intellectuals and Academics" who while claiming to be Liberals, often seem to act the opposite.

I've heard the same thing about Massachusetts, which is funny considering they were one of the original states to fight the Independence war and help draft the constitution that gives us the right to bear arms.

In CO, all you have to do is take an all-day (or a few nights) gun safety class - which involves passing an open book test at the end and popping a few bullets in to a piece of paper roughly 20 ft away -- and then fill out the application, pay a couple hundred bucks for the background check and the permit, wait about 60-90 days and you've got it. They pretty much cannot turn you down here unless something shows on your background check.

ummm.. hon, better leave that thing at home when you visit Vancouver. I don't want to have to bail you out of jail. (grins)

Even though I have the permit, I have never actually used it. The only time I have ever had any of my guns out of the house (besides when heading to the range) was when I carried my handgun in the car during the Democratic National Convention and it is not illegal to carry in the car here without a permit.

Additionally, a concealed carry permit is only valid in the state that you get it in.

Being a Canadian, I was shocked when driving through Montana.. gun ads on the radio, gun ads on TV, gun racks in the pickup trucks.. Canucks aren't used to that.

Oh yes. Carrying any gun across State Lines is a serious No No. A Federal Offense.

Not true, several states will honor Out of State carry permits. The best thing to do is research the laws before you travel. Making sure to stay out of IL and Mass.
