Gadgets you MUST have in SL

I read an article from about 2 years ago listing :10 Items You Must Have On SL. I thought I'd throw in my 10 and see how many others disagree. By "gadget" I mean pretty much anything that isn't a house or clothing, but may affect all of them.

In no particular order:

1) An animation override (AO). I won't recommend any particular one but there are three or four very good ones.

2) A Mysti Tool. This is the Swiss Army Knife of SL.

3) If you live in a home that has valuables in it -- things you don't want ripped off -- some kind of home security system. Again, there are several good ones.

4) A mulit-station radio for your home.

5) Something to play on: a surfboard, skiis, parachute, boat, horse, or ridable wombat. Something to do other than shop, dance, and you-know-what.

6) A pose stand. These are freebies everywhere. They are also part of Mysti Tool.

7) A Be-Bar or something similar. I was not quite sure about this one, since using a be-bar that is overloaded can be as much of a pain as digging through inventory.

8) Face and body lighting. It will even make mediocre skins look better. Good ones are often giveaways at better stores.

9) A land leveler. These are usually free either in freebie boxes or at land sales offices. If you're terraforming without too much detail these are indispensible.

10) Something really tacky. But that's just me. You can't throw a rock without hitting something tacky in SL. In fact, there are tacky rocks.

Please feel free to add your own ideas, make your own lists, or tell me why I have no idea what I am talking about.

How exactly do people steal from your home?

They don't -- now that I have my Gee Whiz Security Gadget. :)

To tell the truth, it's never happened to me and I have no reliable evidence that it happens at all. But I do like the security gadgets. They may not be indispensible, but this is my list and purely subjective.

*grins* I guess I set myself up for that. But don't worry, unless you set stuff in your house for sale at L$0, it can't be stolen. Security gadgets are handy to stop people just wandering in and using your stuff, interrupting your chat and other activities, but as a rule theft isn't an issue. I wasn't questioning having them on your list, just your reasoning.

How can someone rip off your valuables?
I understand someone taking your textures that you made if they can view it or scan prim made object but they can also do that in your store too.
They are nice devices if you want privacy and not have someone just pop in but they still stand farther away from orb and use the draw distance if they really want to observe you or whatever you're making.
Only thing I really need is pose stand, gadget wise is texture viewers are handy, music and maybe video related. It was fun to have several male body part related gadgets for period of time, I am so sort of so so about it now and rarely wear mine.
I do enjoy face lights and poses for camera work, and for spacing out virtual Acid trips.
Nothing else really matters to me.
I don't do gadgets well personally.

I've had and disposed of every item in the list, except a ZHAO-2. And a posing stand, but only when I'm building prim attachments from scratch. I do use a little home-grown HUD that includes Argent's Flight Feather, a kind of to-do list, a hugger, a whisperer, and I forget what all else--it's kind of a Mysti without all the stuff I never remember how to use.

Oh, and a CamCaster, of course. :o

I've had houses in different areas, both rented and owned, and still have not got around to worrying about a security system -- and I have never had strangers drop in on me while I was home, which is all I care about.

What is a Be-Bar, please?

Oh, my list of gadgets - my HUDs that are always attached and some misc gadgets I could not live without:

Mysti tool, AO, pose stands (I have one that sits in my bedroom that I use for the general adjustments to my clothing, etc and I have many filled ones that cycle thru poses for picture taking), day planner, Hangout HUD, Huddles, photo studio, face lighting, sex anywhere HUD, hug attachment, home radio

That is all that comes to mind right now, without being inworld, so I would say those are the ones I consider the most important.

I saw that article as well which is what prompted me to purchase the Mysti-tool, even though at the time, I really had no idea what all it could do and basically used it as an AV detector. I still keep discovering new parts of it regularly. That would be my No. 1 MUST HAVE in SL if I had none of the others.

A good animation override is a must for me. I am so glad I have one that doesn't look like every other lady I see. (Sometimes I land at a spot at the same time as lots of other people and kind of chuckle to see a lot of the ladies all doing the same animations.)

The pros and cons and the "who cares" of a home security system have been discussed in the forums, but for my home in the sky...another DEFINITE must-have.

We do have The Internet Radio at home, but I consider that more of a luxury...for me.

ETA: Another "must have" after reading FD's post - a good texture organizer!! Indispensable.

The "people" are SL glitches or "something" since I've now had 3 separate items rezzed in my home just...disappear.

But as far as other people...don't think that's possible. We just have a security system for privacy at home.

We formerly had our home 600m in the sky and *still* had high-flyers trying to get in our door and a few slamming themselves against our windows...for the 10 seconds until they were escorted away by our security orb. I checked out the profile of one of them, and she was in a whole list of various "Peeping Tom" groups.

Now that we've moved up to 1000m, haven't had that happen, at least while I've been home.

~ ~ ~

The first house I rented in SL, I had a woman come in late one night (RL & SL), even with my doors locked. I was upstairs trying on clothes and AV detector saw her coming ever closer. I went down and asked why she was in my house - no answer. She continued just walking around. I asked again...still no answer. She finally left. This was a fairly new sim and soon after that the owner installed security systems in all the rentals where you could click a button on the wall to eject a person.

That first experience really creeped me out.

It was also the same house where I had the door-to-door salesman. Hmmmm... :o

/me perks at day planner

What type of planner is that? In world? Is it a HUD or like a calendar on a wall. (Think I've found my next "must have."

~ ~ ~

Just thought of another of mine - the Rendezvous couples vehicle that allows couples to walk (various poses, including carry), swim, fly, sit, dance, kiss. PG - has come in really handy so my Partner can "drive" and I can type...lol. Also if there are no good couple seating places where we are.

Oh, I forgot about that -- yes, that is another of my favorite gadgets.

The instructions and default attachment will attach to roughly your waistline and it looks kind of like one of those rectangular pagers that many of us wore years ago. However, Madhu gave me the idea of attaching it to a HUD point, which I like much better. It is controlled by a notecard that you simply enter events into -- enter a date/time, followed by a comment. It initially pops up a blue box in the upper corner a bit before the event - I forget exactly how much in advance. You then have the option of various times for 'sleep' before being re-reminded or turning that event notification off. I searched a while and posted in a few places before I found it and I cannot live without it.

I don't remember exactly where I got it, but I'll drop all the info to you when I get inworld in a bit.

:D Yup.

AO

That's it - don't use much of anything else really other than built in building tools. I have no luck with HUDs but come to think of it, do have one dance one that has come in handy at times.

1) An AO
2) A flight enhancer, whether it's just a Light Feather or something incorporated in some other gadget. gotta have one of these.
3) A Kiss/hug attachment, again, whether it's just for kissing/hugging, or has other features.
4) A radar. Very usefull, to see whether someone's within chatrange or not, and some other things.
5) A swimming attachment. Not used often, but good to have around when you need it. Skinnydipping just ain't fun without this!
6) "That" attachment, though it should only be worn at appropriate times instead of hanging out your zipper 24/7. Females don't need one though, a good detailed skin is all they need.
7) Something for casual fun, like a car, airplane, hoverboard, parachute, basically the kind of things to use while bored.

These are really the basics, and some of them I have combined within 1 gadget. I don't use many others myself, and of those, the only one that might be useful to many people would be the:
8) Dancehud. Just a gadget to dance, so you're not stuck with the dances offered by the danceballs at clubs. Many different types of these exist, from different creators, with different features etc. You can do without, it's just a nice extra.

I have a few more gadgets, but those are either rarely used, or are for very specific tasks that most people won't need.

Bestest gadgets ever:

Mystitool (for all the other must-haves it replaces), AO, Ged Larsen's Loop-Rezz tool, a prim mirrorer (brilliant for mirror-imaging own prims, nobody else's of course), super-jump attachment (for quick escapes when it's no-fly), dancing cow attachment.

Stupidest waste of money as it never got used:

Vampire HUD (I only wanted to nibble my loved-ones every day, not be forced to go hunting, and should have read the fine-print first).

Gadget I wish had never been invented:

Talking foetus hud.

Wow. I've been in SL for a nearly a year and a half. I got an AO early one. I have never owned: a Mysti tool, a home security system, a home radio, a Be-Bar (no clue what that is), face or body lighting (except for face lighting that came free with hair, and which I discarded), or a land leveler. And I've never missed 'em.

A few things I totally love:

- Meike's Hugger. Wonderful, fabulous hugger. Sweet, beautifully done.
- Vista's AO. Love the stances.
- Snuggles rug from Pond Life. Best snuggles ever. Pillow Talk - also the best snuggles ever. Their little rezzable daisies for sitting on can be combined to make.. also the very most best snuggles ever.
- My keel-billed toucan from Animania who sits on my shoulder, peers about, and whispers toucanly nothings in my ear.
- My Vector Interactor. Just so fun. Can be totally annoying, which can at times be part of the fun, depending on context, or totally wonderful, likewise.
- V. Paine... A. Debruyere... K. Miles... K. Deerhunter... S. Aszkenaze... but they're not "gadgets", per se :)

My "indispensable" gadgets include my flight feather, my walk replacer, and... well, that's about it, really.

I have a stop animations widget I lifted from Public Help Island as a newbie and a builder's platform rezzer that have come in handy, and I could get by without those. I haven't worn my Kiss/Hug attachments in forever. I used a radar HUD as a hostess, but not since.

Guess I'm not a very gadgety person.
