Pretty much all my outfits include both bra and panties, chosen the same was as I would if I were wearing them for real. For me, dressing my avvie fully is all part of the experience of "being" that avatar. Even if no one sees the under-layers but me.

Some of my shirts are, like in RL, just ever so slightly translucent. And the bra does show, though almost as a subliminal effect.

Even though the bra might not show at all, if I _did_ choose to disrobe, I would want it to be there for the full process. And there have been rendering glitches before that made shirts vanish, but left bras in place...

The Brassiere invented by a man!

Not true! Urban Legend...

From: someone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassiere

The claim that the brassiere was invented by a man named Otto Titzling (phonetically tit-sling) who lost a lawsuit with Phillip de Brassiere (fill up de' brassiere) is an urban legend that originated with the 1971 book Bust-Up: The Uplifting Tale of Otto Titzling and the Development of the Bra and was propagated in a song from the movie Beaches.[4]

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herminie_Cadolle

Herminie Cadolle (1845-1926) was the inventor of the modern bra and founder of the Cadolle lingerie house.
Herminie was a close friend of the French insurrectionist Louise Michel, and it was this connection that lead her to leave for the safety of Buenos Aires. Here, in 1887, Herminie opened a shop selling made-to-measure underwear.
Returning to Paris in 1889, she opened a similar lingerie workshop on the street Chaussée d'Antin, where she invented a two-piece undergarment called le bien-être (the wellbeing). The lower part was a corset for the waist and the upper supported the breasts by means of shoulder straps. She exhibited at the Great Exposition of 1900 and by 1905 the upper half was being sold separately as a soutien-gorge (literally, "support for the throat", but gorge in old French meant breast), the name by which bras are still known in France.
Herminie became a fitter of bras to queens, princesses, dancers, and actresses. Mata Hari was among her customers. She was also first to use cloth incorporating rubber (elastic) thread. Cadolle's business is still running today.

I dress my avatar pretty much like I do in RL, which includes bras and panties. ...
this might have something to do with my SL dressing. In RL, I seldom wore bras until I got older and gravity started to take hold, and I usually only wear panties when I'm wearing jeans because I hate the feel of denim against some parts.

I always thought women wore bras to keep their breasts from sagging and swinging back and forth. Is that not correct in SL?

I see women in RL who are wearing shirts that are thin enough so that bra outlines would show if they were wearing them. Those who apparently not wearing them had breasts much lower than those who were wearing them.

How does that work in SL?

For some of us, our breast size was small enough that when we were younger, gravity did not have much of an effect. I did not really wear bras on a regular basis in RL until I was roughly 35 or so.

In SL, one of the sliders affects gravity, so mine stay perky.

I don't have a gravity slider or a breast size slider. They don't put them on male bodies. (I do have a slider that women probably don't have, however ;} )

That explains why the women I see in SL have boobs that are not sagging. I assume that no one sets the slider to "hanging low" or whatever.

Do bras fit any size or level of hanging?

Thalic,
Female shapes have a breast size, gravity, and cleavage slider. With the gravity slider set to the high gravity end the breasts, assuming they aren't at the smallest size, sag. At the other end, the breasts are high up, like we normally have to wear bras to accomplish.

SL is the opposite of RL. In SL the breasts stay in one position, set by the slider, and the bra fits around the breast, where ever it is. Putting on a bra will not affect the position of the breast. So, if you have large, sagging breasts in RL and you normally wear a bra for lift, setting the gravity to low will make your avatar look more realistic when you are wearing a bra. Setting it to heavy will make it look like you are braless even when you are wearing a bra.

I wear a bra only when it's meant to show. Either for a private moment when I'll be undressing, or under a see-through outfit when I want to tease but not actually show nipplage.

I wear panties when I'm in an outfit where private bits will be visible if I don't (unless my intent is to flash them!), to show a hint of panty under a very low-cut pair of shorts or one that partly unfastened in the front (yes I have a pair like that!), or (again) for private moments when they're a stop along the path to getting completely naked. I have some prim skirts from Zoe Delling that don't require glitch pants underneath; they're fun because I can wear them with panties underneath to tease, or nothing at all to tease even more ;)

Otherwise I've just never seen any point. As others have pointed out, you don't need a bra to support your boobs here in SL. I suppose that it can help prevent appearing momentarily naked while changing outfits, but honestly I don't care if people get glimpses of my naked pixels. And lots of dresses and blouses are low-cut enough or skimpy at the shoulders in ways that will make most bras show; that's mostly not a look I like either here or in RL.

thank heavens for redesign. (ps *I* can change a wheel bearing, but WTF would I when I can have some silly guy trip over himself to do it for me as a favor =P)

personally I PREFER corsets in real life, and not those neo-victorian contraptions that attempt to remold you into a barbie doll (with about the same ability to draw a breath) but rather early of mid period versions, properly made.... shame they cost so much =/

I find corsets look quite sexy on a woman, but not the super small hourglass waist look, just enough to enhance the hips and bust I think is nice :)

Many of you have answered. Thanks. So here is my reply:

I wear a bra in RL for the usual reasons. It's not that my boobs are big, but a little lift does add comfort. It is really necessary when I am running, but just walking around all day would be a problem without a bra. Also, I like clothes, and sexy bras and panties are nice even if no one else sees them.

I wear bras and panties, usually very pretty with lace, in SL. My avatar is me, and I like to dress in SL the way I dress in RL. Also, the slight visibility of the bra under a slightly transparent blouse or top adds to the realism. In RL there is the slight image due to the small amount of transparancy of most fabrics as well as the outline of the bra physically affecting the outer fabric. In SL it is only the transparancy matter.

In SL I collect clothing, including lingerie that I like.

I don't see how a bra could make you a pervert? A cute bra and matching undies can make a good cute substitute for a bikini on some sim beaches. Most bras and undies very much the same as a bikini.

You obviously don't understand men.

Oh yeah, now I remember, I have a rl bf who suddenly grows forty hands when I'm just changing for bed for crying out loud and they are just breasts goes through my mind.

That is a *completely* different thing.

No, my meaning was I don't understand the obsession with breasts? They are just breasts for crying out loud.

Read my post. I wasn't talking about breasts. The thread is not about breasts. What is surprisingly erotic is lingerie, and females talking in a matter-of-fact manner about wearing it. Or not. And why . . .

Pep (I wanted to be subtle ladies, honestly; please don't allow me - or Avawyn - to deter you from commenting)

Yes, to a male, at least to me, sexy lingerie is erotic. Even more so than bathing suits that show the same amount of flesh.

Hell, these days, most bra and pantie sets cover more than the bikini does - which is why I always thought it funny that it was considered taboo to run around in your undies.
