i chose Chandra for my alt because it means 'the shining moon' in Sanskrit or something similar. I was looking for names to do with the moon and found it and loved it. I thought is was appropriate seeing as Claire means 'clear, bright, shining light'. i just figured i would shine lol.

From: Jig Chippewa I'll try and start a thread. I was just reading the thread about anonymity/disclosure and it occurred to me that our first names here must have some significance. Anyone care to share the reasons for their choice of name? Mine is pretty obvious but some are very ethereal and interesting. My name is a combination of my real life names . Elinah

My RL first name is John, so I was quite glad to find it in the SL surname list. My SL first name is for the place I was born and grew up.
The trouble is, of course, people call me Barrington (or Barr), unless I get to know them quite well and ask them to call me John. I don't mind either, but Barrington takes some typing for them.

Rihanna is a RP character I've used since ~1990. I wanted something that was similar to Rhiannon but still unique -- everybody and her sister wanted to be a Rhiannon in those days. And I loved Diane Duane's novels, in which the Romulans' name for themselves is "Rihannsu". Of course, people still ended up calling me the more common Rhianna, instead, or Rhi when they shorten it. Both are pretty, though, so I don't really mind, and although I prefer "my lady" if I'm IC, "Rhi" is certainly better than "Rih".
Even a few years ago, I could still guarantee being the only Rihanna anywhere I went online, but of course now there's suddenly Rihannas all over the place. And everyone thinks I'm emulating some pop singer who probably wasn't even born when I started using it. *rolls eyes*
I've seen half a zillion surnames on SL that I would have preferred to use (the current Nightfire, for instance) but when I joined, there was nothing remotely interesting available. Most of the choices were city names -- I'm still confused by the people who willingly chose "Losangeles". But Laasonen was inoffensive, had the right sound, and felt vaguely of wind and ice and snow-covered mountains. Spent about an hour googling it to try to rule out any unfortunate associations, but never did find out exactly what it means.

Archie
short for Archiebald - which was my radio call sign in the days before radio communications became legal in the UK and before mobiles.
I am not bald, far from it -so I dropped the last bit

LOL. I was eating a Snickers bar when I chose my name and the last name Snook was (obviously) available for additional alliteration points. Sometimes I regret my choice, sometimes not. It seems to start conversations for better or worse.

My name I used previously in a single player game called "MYST Uru". After finally finishing the game I knew I would use the name again somewhere. That somewhere became SL.

I wanted a psuedo-gothic name, so I named myself after pro wrestler Kevin Fertig's Mordecai gimmick. I chose the surname Graves at random, not knowing that it was the same surname as Michael Graves from the legendary punk band The Misfits. Even though I'm well over my avatar's goth phase, I still think the name is pretty cool.

The phoenix rises from the ashes, reborn. I chose this name because of a brush with death that occurred in 2002 when I was nearly killed in a head-on collision and was not expected to survive.
