How was "Sandy" derived from "Alexandra?"

Xandra == Sandra == Sandy

Elora is sort of like my RL name, so it felt "right" for me. It's the name of the princess baby in the movie Willow, which is a film I adore. It sounded nice with Lunasea, I liked the alliteration. All rather simple.

I'm boring. RL first name=Alexandra. I thought about Alex (but no one ever calls me that) or Lex (which I was called by two friends years ago-one was called Alexei, the other Alexander, so we decided to "all be Lex" ;) ) but settled on Alyx. I wanted a "y" somewhere, my RL nickname is Sandy. (Which is obviously where the last name came from)

i called ya alex once!

"Sandy" is also a nickname for the male variant, Alexander.

in general our first name is our only REALLY unique attribute... there may be many with outr last name, but having a unique first name (or unique combination) is what helps us be recognizable

addendum to my other post, the 'Lament' last name was already retired.... else I'd have been "Shadows' Lament" a fictional persona from another long dead game (the meaning was roughly intended as 'feared by the Shadows', a sub-fictional group of ruthless pirate rogues)

I thought Kyomoon was the best name on the list when I signed up, I guess because there's the name of a romantically associated astrological body in it. So then I went to one of those name your baby sites to look for ideas on a first name and I guess I started with the K's in order to be alliterative. Right away I found Kaimi which is supposed to be a Hawaiian name meaning "seeker". Well ok perfect. That's me. I have a Hawaiian son-in-law and grandson so I liked that it was Hawaiian, too. The only thing I failed to consider was that English speakers never pronounce it correctly. Or at least not the way I do which is Kah-eemy.

Btw Neal Stephenson is about my favorite author these days. I agree that Snow Crash isn't his best but it is well written and prophetic and it did lead me to read all of his other stuff which is great.

Funny how I didn't name my home here Tir Asleen. That would have been going a bit too far, and too obvious :)

Old nickname - why, I will not tell - plus the least annoying surname at the time I signed on.

Significance?

Absolutely, it should be a requirement for sl. I picked mine because of a favorite song of my father's, Corey's Coming from Harry Chapin. The downside is that I've had people come up to my obviously female av and say "are you a male in rl?" instead of "hi how are you?" as their first question. :( Turns out Corey is not a common female name outside of the US. Oh well, it makes for interesting conversation.

And by the way, the answer to the first question is no, I'm definitely female. :)

hehe funnily enough, another character was called Rhoan Jenkins lol

Rhian was the name of one of the ladies I studied Welsh with in Swansea, and I liked her (and the name). We also had a Rhiannon, and they got confused all the time...

@Lindal: I know, but mostly in Scotland...but we got our own forum Sandy here, and he's male!

@Jumpy: Yeah, and tho I don't HATE it, I just don't react if you call me that...

Desmond... Des Monde - 'the world'.

As in... 'the world is not enough' :)

When I began Desmond, he had basically nothing, wore a freebie tee from one of Anshe's malls and was completely and utterly unknown.

I wanted a 'business' character to sort of quietly doodle in 3d and run a shop. A couple of times in 2005 I had pretty low confidence, and wondered if it was even possible. But I had dreams of more.

I set a goal for myself - 4096m, provided I was able to support the tier for it (25 USD/mo) within one year. Failing that I was going to pack it in and stay on 512m.

4096m sounded pretty big back then. That's less than 1/500th of what I deal in now, but honestly it was a scarier goal at the time! I wonder what the future holds... could be anything, but whatever it is, I'm enjoying the journey. And still trying. Hence the name.

what's in a name anyway?
01-06-2008 16:47
My rl first name and sl first name have nothing to do with each other, but I almost legally changed my rl first name to Farrah. I think it's one of the most beautiful names out there... I have a very basic rl first name... Melissa.
*shrugs* Another of my favorite first names is Jade.

Raudf = Red in Icelandic... except my keyboard wouldn't handle the proper letter for it, the d/f combo, so I broke it into the two letters. I happen to also like foxes.

And no, I am nicknamed Red in RL too :p Go figure.

My first name is just a name, nothing more nothing less, but if I had to do it again I would name myself XD Boffin. With all of the people saying XD I figure I would be the most popular person in SL!

If I had a daughter in SL I would name her =p as that seems to be a popular name too!

OK, someone please fill me in. What is the meaning of "XD"

I thought is was a kind extreme smiley. The basic smiley was:
: )

then
: D
was the same but with a bigger smile, so I thought the "X" in "XD" was a huge smile with some replacement for the eyes. Eyes closed?

Enlighten me, please, anyone. Thanks.

As far I know XD means XD. When a person is reading a sentence and sees XD they read it as XD and not a smiley face. The same goes for =P. I read that as equals P. I read D as D.

If someone wises to denote a smile in their sentence they may want to use the tried and true :) instead of cluttering up their sentence with AOL type symbols.

This all makes for very interesting reading. Please keep them coming!
I named my "self" in honour of the female character in Hemingway's short story, "Hill's Like White Elephants" as well as Hamlet's reference to "jig" and it numerous meanings in English.
