So when I see a thread I'm not interested in, I don't read it. Or if a thread loses my interest, I don't read it. When I think a thread is inappropriate, I don't read it.
What I don't do is AR it, or campaign to get it, and threads like it, abolished.
For two reasons. The first is, it's the internet, and you'll never win a fight like that.
The second is, who am I to tell others what they can and cannot post?
Obviously, this is LL's house (even if the landlord never seems to drop by to say hi or fix the leaky sink or test the fire sprinklers), so LL can dictate whatever they want. If they choose to, which they basically don't.
The only arguments I've heard which make any sense is that it's somehow stopping honest resident questions from being asked or answered. I just don't see threads not getting answered around here. I don't believe that argument. And it's very difficult to gauge how many people don't ask questions because of off topic posts here, but I suspect it's pretty small.
So why do *you* try to police this forum?
When somebody AR's or complains about a thread, I have this image in my mind of the "concerned citizen" writing the major television network complaining about something they saw during prime time last night.

Even AR'ing a thread doesn't bother me, if that's what you want to do, the button is there. But to start threads to complain about other threads, or to post in a particular thread how stupid or annoying it is, and to call people attention whores and what not, is mind bogglingly laughable, if you are doing it in seriousness. However, if you are doing it just to be a cheeky twit, then by all means....Carry On. (tm)

I don't understand it either Love. You would think some of these people are being paid by LL to moderate. I never see legit questions go unanswered here. I ignore what I don't like or what does not interest me.

From: Ordinal Malaprop Perhaps you could answer your own question first; I am sure the assembled company would love to hear. I am not sure your characterization is entirely correct. Love isn't so much trying to Police this forum, but to encourage others to stop policing it. How do you express such a wish on a forum without making a post about it?

I'm making my feelings clear so that the people whom I am asking have a frame of reference for providing an answer. I never told anybody to stop, for example. I just compared them to security guards who think they're real police.

This would really be so much easier if they would just re-open the General Discussion and Off-topic forums.
With the current level of moderation it would seem the most easily reasonable choice.
--------------------------- The only reasons I can think for them not to is either -
Pride - not wanting to admit they got close-happy when they shut them down in the first place.
Ego - thinking that "sometime soon" they will shut us all up and return this to a strictly moderated Resident Answers forum
Apathy - They just don't (or barely) care what topics are discussed anymore.
Or they are just bidding time to close the whole deal - maybe when they upgrade the website.

There is a sort of justification for people trying to police the forum (note that I have not AR'd or tried to police anything), and that is that LL have closed forums in the past because of the nature of the discussion and could do so again.
That said, I can't see that anything that happens in these forums at the moment is likely to get them shut down, and since the Lindens don't appear to look at them very often it probably doesn't matter in any case.

From: Love Hastings Heh, I was expecting that. Please note that I'm asking a question. I'm making my feelings clear so that the people whom I am asking have a frame of reference for providing an answer. I never told anybody to stop, for example. I just compared them to security guards who think they're real police. Oh come on; you are complaining about people who complain about other people, it isn't as if this is some sort of sociological investigation. Well, either that or you are insulting them for some other reason than that you wish them to stop, I suppose - that would, I admit, be more drama-mongering than attempted policing. Perhaps a combination.

Well, either that or you are insulting them for some other reason than that you wish them to stop, I suppose - that would, I admit, be more drama-mongering than attempted policing. Perhaps a combination. Heh, I was expecting that. Sure, I'm judging others. We all do. And yes, my comments are sort of a thinly veiled criticism. But they shouldn't bother anyone unless such persons saw some sort of truth in them and consequently felt a bit of a tool. And anybody who feels justified in doing what they do might just provide a good answer. But yes, I agree 100%, there is some hypocracy on my part with this thread. /me shrugs and doesn't really care. I like Alicia's answer though: these are stupid threads. It's as good a reason as I've heard so far. I personally think that some people just feel that they know what's better for the community at large, and will happily venture fourth to make it that way.

From: Love Hastings Obviously, this is LL's house (even if the landlord never seems to drop by to say hi or fix the leaky sink or test the fire sprinklers), so LL can dictate whatever they want. If they choose to, which they basically don't. Totally agree that this is LL's house. Whether they wish to close threads or not. It is entirely our choice to participate in a thread or not. There are many threads in which I don't post, either from lack of interest, or simply from lack of knowledge on the subject. If people feel a need to 'police', they can start with themselves. Haven't ARed anything yet, don't think I ever will. It would have to be something really horrendous... I have noticed though, that some genuine SL questions are taking longer to be answered. As an example, I've recently answered two questions on building. Me! So far, the only thing I've built is a Top hat and a pet basket, lol. After bumping these posts before they fell off the page, I finally (+/- 3 hrs) gave it my best shot. Of course no one has to answer anything, and to be fair, I've heard that on some other forums, it can take days before anyone answers. I hope this doesn't come off as policing because I truly think there's room for everyone - even Jumpy It is simply an observation on my part. It could have been just an off day for builders. All and all, this is the best place to come if you want to learn. I don't think I would have stayed on SL as long as I have without these forums here to visit when I couldn't figure something out. Thank you all for the knowledge you've taken the time to share.

Hello you lot, I really didn't set out to be abusive or cause trouble, I guess I was just a little tired of having to scroll through various "Pie" comments even on totally unrelated threads. I'm really not a spoil sport, and yep... the pie threads and cheescake threads are fun for a while and I do know which threads to give a miss to. My main bit of frustration is when you scamper into other threads that I'm actually quite interested in and then I have to scroll through two pages to get to the next "real" post. Anyway, I agree my thread is as bad as any other, but you know.. sometimes you have to fight .. er pie with pie.. It's up to you guys though, and I know polls actually mean nothing .. but it seems an initial gut reaction from the rest of the Board is that maybe we're all a bit full of pie for a while. It's up to you. PS. Oh and really I'm not setting myself up as some sort of policeman, hence the poll. I was genuinely interested to see if I was just being a miserable git..
