I'm still new to this game but I use to not have problems with people visiting my property. But when I purchased my land and put my house on it, the house was locked but I left the property open.
After finding some items that people had dropped all over my property, I decided to get a security system that would protect my land, not just the house, and would eject people after giving them a friendly message. As I was putting in the boundary information, this guy drops out of the sky and starts bumping me. The only thing he kept saying was, "Do you want to fuck?" That's all he would say. I tried to ignore him but he followed me all around my property, bumping me, and asking me this question over and over again. No matter how many times I asked him to leave he would circle me, bump me, and ask this moranic question. Finally I armed the system and told him that he was about to be ejected. I have never been so happy in my life that anything worked like it was suppose to and he was ejected away. I only bought the system the day before so I was very happy that it was up and running. It's the idiots like that that make people protect their property the way they do. I'm not going to be sexually harrassed on my property. But I do keep the ceiling low so that people can fly over my property. I also widened the waterway around it so that people on boats or jet-skis can get through. I don't have a problem with people visiting, I just don't want them leaving stuff all over the place. |

Thank you for your intelligent approach to security! You do realize, though, that you can ban and eject individuals WITHOUT buying an expensive security system? It's fun to do it manually when you run into an idiot like the one who dropped in on you. But the security system is good for those times when you're not around to personally pull the trigger. _____________________

Somebody like that also needs to be ARed - that is really bad harassment and is against the SL TOS

But the orbs tend to be more aggressive than a rabid rottweiller on crack first thing in the morning. and it seems a little overkill to have them active when the resident isn't even around. I only want to look in their panty drawer dammit! ![]() Same as in RL, I don't want people poking around my house when I gone in SL either. ![]() _____________________

I don't have a problem with people visiting, I just don't want them leaving stuff all over the place. Elurin, just FYI, in About Land, in either Options or Objects tab, there is a option to check for autoreturn, and then a space for number of minutes. This will automatically return any item dropped by any resident except for you. _____________________

Same as in RL, I don't want people poking around my house when I gone in SL either. ![]() You know, I feel the same way. But logically, that feeling of having your personal space violated shouldn't apply here. An intruder can't steal your stuff, or even pick it up and fondle it. He can use your poseballs, but what the heck, they don't wear out. Now, if said intruder comes by when I'm engaged in some intimate activity, that's another matter. So, for myself, I'm trying to leave my land as open to visitors as I can. _____________________

Same as in RL, I don't want people poking around my house when I gone in SL either. ![]() The reason that I don't want people poking around my RL house is that they could destroy or steal things. If they could somehow visit without any threat of those things happening, and if I could have them leave when I come home so that I can enjoy privacy if I want it, I would open my doors wide and welcome in the world. And guess what? In Second Life, all those things are true! They CAN'T destroy or steal my things. And if I come home and ask them to leave and they won't, I can ban them from my land and they're gone. I support the right of people to ban people from their land if they want to. But I have to admit that I Just Don't Get It. |

"Shouldn't" being the operative word. Doesn't make the fact that people DO feel violated any less true. Imposting YOUR "shoulds" on other people isn't your place. _____________________

But *why* do you prevent object entry? What are you trying to accomplish with that? The same reason I have no build set; I'm trying to prevent griefer attacks with self-replicating objects. I've seen some of those, including a couple that just about made the entire grid unusable -- and yes, my own land was attacked. (We haven't had any severe ones recently, due to new throttles on self-replication in the server code and increased vigilance by the Lindens. The self-replication throttles, sadly, DO break some legitimate scripting concepts, but the alternative is worse.) Auto-return doesn't help against a self-replicating attack; by the time the original object has been returned, there are dozens of new copies of it on your land, each churning out more until your prim allowance is exhausted. The only thing that helps is to have both no build and no object entry set. Sadly, that does interfere with people trying to use vehicles on my land. Given the size and location of my home, it's not a big issue, but I wish that I could eliminate it completely. It doesn't stop people from walking, flying, or teleporting in; they are welcome to do those things and enjoy my home whenever I am not there. |

Imposting YOUR "shoulds" on other people isn't your place. Uh, Mickey, where do you come up with me imposing my values on somebody else? Heck, I was AGREEING with her that I felt the same sense of personal violation. I was simply pointing out that the feeling (which we both have) is illogical in SL. Despite my pre-programmed prejudice, for myself I'm trying to follow logic. What anyone else chooses to do is their business. _____________________

Hello everybody, I'm new here. So please be gentle. I was just out exploring the mainland and crashing into ban lines everywhere. Well let me tell you, it wasn't much fun at all!. So I got to thinking, rather than put up ban lines, why don't we just get one of those Greeter scripts and edit the welcoming message to something pleasant like: "This resident would like some privacy. Please leave the area if not invited. Thank you ever so much! *hugs and kisses*". I dunno about you lot. But I would find a message like that far more scarier than guard dogs, barbed wire and other scary stuff. Soo.. good idea? Which do you prefer? Banlines or a homesecurity orb teleporting you back home? I rather be bounced back, than teleporting back home and have to teleport back to where I was and start over. Be careful for what you ask for. |

Be careful for what you ask for. ZOMG! There are only TWO alternatives?? ![]() Come along now! What a lame straw man argument. If a parcel owner wishes to keep people out, which method would I prefer? A homesecurity orb that ejects from the parcel after a warning. But maybe you were not aware that there was such an option? You should get out more. |

This will automatically return any item dropped by any resident except for you. I've looked EVERYWHERE for the autoreturn option and just can't find it. EEEKKKK! I hate being a noob! I'm also wondering how to do the no-build, no entry object thing. I have my land set to group but apparently that does absolutely nothing unless you set every, single, solitary thing on it to group. I would love to have these open as options so that things can just be returned. |

But *why* do you prevent object entry? What are you trying to accomplish with that? Does it really have the desired effect, whatever that is? (Unless you don't have auto-return set--in which case, why not?) I'm not being argumentative, I'm just trying to understand what people are trying to achieve by using different bans--especially object entry. Certain neighbours visitors like to use guns, bullets freeze over my land form cheap crap, and the scripts cause lag. It also keeps flyers out. _____________________
