Well, maybe Thanksgiving is not a holiday you celebrate. However it is a holiday celebrated in the United States.........last I heard Second Life is owned by Linden Research which is an American based company, hosted from American based servers. Wishing people (yeah, even people who are not American) a happy and healthy holiday is not anything I'll ever apologize for......you can ignore it if you want. You can bitch about it if you want. You can even start an assinine thread like this about if you want. I still won't apologize.
And before you pipe in with the tired old demographic horse hockey about 60% of the SL population is not American let's put that in perspective.......40% is. Now tell me that anything close to 40% of any other single nation is represented in SL. Get off your high horse.......and Happy Thanksgiving. |

Hmmm...
Could it be that people are just being nice and polite? Why would you want that to stop? Accept with good grace and move on or just explain you do not celebrate it because of where you are from and who knows a whole new conversation may ensue and before you know it you may have another friend! They are not giving you a greeting to ruin your day I am sure! |

Sounds like you're a bit jealous. I think it's very kind when people give me such good wishes. It may not be a public holiday in the UK, where I live, but I think of it as a bit like Harvest Thanksgiving - a time to be grateful for all the good things that have happened this year and to count your blessings.

I keep my pet peeve fenced in on my deck. So far, it's led to a number of new peeves of different and odd colorations as they continue to multiply like wabitts! Crossing Pink with Colossus Linden I got a rabbit wielding a chainsaw. Not safe at all.

Getting wished a "A Happy Thanksgiving" continuously by Americans, even though I don't celebrate it..(I'm not American ...Yes..it's a shocker, not EVERYONE in SL is American) you're not? well then don't have a happy thanksgiving... but I don't believe you're not american, what with the national passtime being bitching about people being nice to you and suing people for not stopping you from being stupid. but if you really aren't then get the hell out =P (yes I'm kidding, mostly, though I think americans have at least one thing to be happy about today... your whiny ass isn't where they are) _____________________

As Stephen Fry tweeted yesterday: "Hope you're enjoying your holiday. There's still time to reconsider: Britain will have you back, if you behave."

I dont mind really, even if I am not American. I dont celebrate thanksgiving either, but its nice when people say happy thanksgiving anyway.
However, in the previous years I have returned it saying: thank you, but I dont celebrate, but Happy thanksgiving to you! This has upset many Americans, why wont I celebrate their holidays? (umm, cause I am not American ....), endless discussions. I wish they could just accept that other countries has their holidays and that we shouldnt be "obligied" to celebrate the Americans ones. Thanksgiving is one thing, that I can understand they are surprised about since its to celebrate the harvest. Harvest has traditionally been celebrated around the world in most cultures. But why get upset that I dont concider 4th of July something to celebrate personally? It has been suggested to me that it would be better if I celebrated the 4th of July instead of May 17th (which is the independence day of my country), since "after all 4th of July IS the real independence day" as they phrase it .... It is in the US and Rwanda, but all other countries that celebrate this does it on another day. So its not the generic independence day as many Americans seem to think. That said I am happy to wish you a happy 4th of July if you are American or from Rwanda ![]() I have just stopped explaining now, the discussions get too tiresome. Now I just say thanks and return the wishes. |

I second the motion! Please, Americans (North America, excluding Canada and Mexico) like Peggy, stop assuming everyone you meet in SL is part of your minority. It's bad enough LL claims to run an international business when they can't think outside their own region, without your narrow-mindedness reinforcing them. Incidentally, while 40% of SL's residents might be from the USA that does not mean 40% of your country is represented in SL.
I realise all this may be hard for you to understand, but it would help your country's worldwide image just a tad if people like you remembered when they are adddressing an international audience; or even that such a thing exists. |

Getting wished a "A Happy Thanksgiving" continuously by Americans, even though I don't celebrate it..(I'm not American ...Yes..it's a shocker, not EVERYONE in SL is American) My Irish friends love the holiday, possibly because some of them have been at my table or gotten 'care packages' of goodies over the years. I think it's the folks having to smell the cooking or looking over the shoulder of those with the goodie packages that hate being wished a Happy Thanksgiving. This kind of reminds me of people moaning about Americans saying "Have a Nice Day" or "Have a good one". I never hear that here, and I miss it, although the 'luv' and 'pet' and 'duck' are kinda cute. I'm less enamored with 'yoke' and 'Aul Wan' ![]() _____________________

Yeah. I'm happy to have any excuse for a vicarious holiday, lazy sonofagun that I am. Lamb for lunch, turkey for dinner, local bar for supper. Christ, I'm gonna be sorry tomorrow.

Exactly.
Well speaking of the C-man, Fridays are good for fasting... Or inspired by another great leader: giving to the poor. I love that Muslims have a holiday for that. I didn't know that til this week. |

I didn't know that til this week. All Muslim holidays have that element of catering to the poor or helping them out in some way. For instance, believers who for whatever reason can't fast during Ramazan are encouraged to feed a poor, sick or elderly person by way of expiation for every day of fasting they miss. |

That's wonderful. I love things like that. Now we've come full circle, because that is what the holiday is to me. And watching the Wizard of Oz, of course. Not much I can do about the parades I miss. _____________________

Oh stop complaining..I'm aussie, dont celebrate turkey day, yet still was taken out for the most wonderful lunch in the nicest restaurant in sl by the most wonderful person and am walking on air. And I've decided to shut up, smile, and be thankful for all happiness, including good friends who celebrate positive things.

My Dutch friend sent out Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all his friends list, even though he doesn't celebrate it. There are other options besides getting mad about it.
I apologize if I have done or said anything in wishing anyone a Happy Thanksgiving that has caused them any physical or emotional harm. _____________________
