Ok guys I know some of the alternative viewers like shown in Wiki http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewersBut what is Cyro and V-Life for. Someone told me they are private and you can get them for 32k Lindens. know about it? Update: The new Viewer called V-Life finds every avatar "anywhere" inside SL, not only on a SIM, and you can teleport to the SIM to check out what you need. And the other functions inside this viewer are made just for griefing (Client crash /SIM crash and so on). I already see a lot of guys using the V-Life viewer. The official GreenLife viewer (listed inside Wiki), which comes with many great extra and really helpful features and good looking skins lets you see which version avatars use (Standard, GreenLife, V-Life, Cyro. etc...) in most cases, right behind the avatar name. .

If they're GPLed then the first buyer can request a copy of the source, build it, and redistribute it... so I can't see them selling for that much for long... if they're legit.

for what it may be worth, the V-Life is supposed to contain a virus http://www.kabalyero.com/2009/05/23/vlife-means-trojan-horse-virus/

There's only one third party viewer I feel comfortable using and that's Kirsten's. This is simply because I've heard the guy chatting in Ahern on voice.
All the other viewers could've been coded by Bart Simpson for all I know.

I don't see any point in using anything other than the official LL viewers these days - especially if you have to pay. The LL1.22 works pretty well apart from sluggish rezzing when you arrive somewhere. The updated 1.23 Release Candidate seems more stable now even with shadows enabled - I was using it for a couple of hours today - no problems apart from it being laggy.

Haven't heard of either of these viewers but I have tried some other alternatives. My favourite at the moment is the Greenlife Emerald viewer (which is free). It has some pretty neat features, is fully up to date, and is faster & more stable for me than the official one.

I use Kirsten's SD2-R7 viewer sometimes because it's one of the few where shadows and snapshots both work, and it's still the best of those. Marine Kelly's RLV extensions are another good reason to use alternate viewers.

I didn't know you could use someone else's viewer. Is LL cool with it? How do you use it? How does it affect being able to to go Ursula?

TY. LL is cool with it, you're free to use the code and make your own viewer. You Google for whatever viewer you want to use, such as Nicholaz, Kirsten's, Restricted Life.. and read the instructions. It has no effect on going to Ursula since the viewer doesn't decide if you can go there or not, the info on your age verification/PIOF status is stored on LL's side.

I can't agree more. If you are on an older machine, or have a low end video card, the Cool Viewer 1.19.5 is highly recommended, along with the Nicholaz BE.

At this particular moment I have a C++ compiler running in the background, compiling the code for the 1.22 viewer. To the OP, yes it's perfectly legal (and encouraged by LL) to create your own viewer. LL made their software open source a while back, plenty of time for a number of third party viewers to be made. You do want to be careful about using them, of course, just like any software. But there are plenty of good reason to use them, which other posters have already mentioned. Personally, I use them for different features, though I usually stick to standard LL viewers. If I can get the code to compile though, I'll make a 1.23 viewer that has the messy hack that breaks the megaprim mesh hider cleaned out. By the way, I keep hearing good things about the GreenLife Emerald viewer, could someone point me to it?

I realise only a very few know whats going on - even those who have been around since 2003 dont know nothing. Most even cannot read the topic. I am not talking about the official release viewers which are listed in the Wiki as alternative. V_Life gives you the opportunity to crash the clients viewers or even the SIM And it lets you teleport to any avatar anywhere inside SL

If you dont see any other point of using another viewer - other do see a point and they do see more, they know a lot more and do a lot more than you can do with you standard. And because those viewers can do "a lot more" also break the TOS I am wondering why LL let this happen.

Have to say, as a business owner I am very leary of using an alternative viewer or even typing my password into anything but the official viewer. I hate having to use my password on the blog and the forums, let alone some crazy piece of software Bart Simpson wrote.
I'm really very surprised that they're as popular as they are. I suppose most people don't have a lot of cash on hand all the time but surely even those people have PIOF and would be risking someone maliciously raising their tier very high or, I dunno, some other unpleasant scam.

I used Dale Glass' client a while back. It was OK. Same with some of the RC clients. For all the positive qualities extolled of the other 3rd-party clients, I have never used any of them as I haven't a clue what might lie hidden 'under the bonnet'. There's enough thieving, deception and misrepresentation going on in SL as it is.
So as a matter of security and self-preservation I stick to the LL client. Yes, it's got serious flaws. But at least it's a known factor backed up by a very visible and somewhat accessible source. I'll err on the side of safety and stick with 'known quantities'.

I totally agree with this. I'd not want to make any business inside SL. Installing an open source client that is modified opens the door to your computer and there is no scanner to warn you. No need to be scared by another Trojaner then.
