From: Uvas Umarov INCREASING bear numbers means MORE contact with humans. Therefore, the need for culling. The polar bear is a dangerous predator, not a cute fuzzy playtoy. Only a dangerous predator to what it is predator of ... I have seen the free roaming polar bear - leave them alone. Yes they are threatened by global warming. The sea ice is melting alarminly quickly though where I am tonight it is -26 celcius.

Visit the Rua sim to see wonderful underwater reefs filled with a huge assortment of sea creatures.
Amazon Nation (I think that was the sim name) used to have a fish breeding experiment set up where the fish evolved and learned over time. I wonder what happened with that?
I have created killer sharks and a few other creatures (some fantasy) in the ocean at Shona which will swim any course you set up for them and attack anyone if they get to close, they can even kill you if you get to close.

I think the OP was suggesting that Linden Lab include animals for all us all to enjoy instead of user created ones but I could be all wrong.

I've seen lots of critters around SL, from dragons to dragonflies... just gotta look.... and those cute squirrels
personally I'm all for Linden created free roaming fauna... but lets make it interesting... we could have linden mosquitos that give you a disease that causes inventory isuses, rabid possums that cause you to crash when you TP, and Polar bears that eat your av and delete your account.... yeah that's the ticket! o.0

Wow! Talk about flaming...I've never seen so much fire! Lol Void. That might just work. We could set them to attack the griefers I would love to see Linden animals roaming about. I think it would be really cool. Though it would have to be thought about very carefully. If they got it all mixed up so that Dinosaurs could walk through New York it might get a bit wierd lol. It might be an idea to let the owner decide which animals they could have. But yeah, insects would be cool, and fishes etc in the seas and lions and tigers and glow in the dark kitties...no wait.... lol

I think the major reason we don't see this is that it'd eith have to use physics (so it wouldn't walk through NYC, just through the streets) which would add lag, or use sensors to detect objects (so as not to wal through them).... either way, adds to sim lag

I saw the video too - what I found interesting wasn't just that there were animals, but that there was an ecosystem (albeit crude) - a real food chain.
I just think that it would be pretty difficult to do well enough not to be silly. And trying to make it "fit' into all the various types of sim that are in existence on the grid would be really, really hard.
And nothing could be worse than coming in-world after an enforced RL break to a pond full of dead cyber fish because you didn't feed them...

From: Maelstrom Janus Here's a wild off the top of my head idea...
instead of trying to kill any animal we see as a threat for whatever reason ( mainly down to the fact that the human population is spreading into every environment ) how about controlling the human population instead ?
Lets only hope that out in the proxima centauri system that someone there doesnt regard a population of several billion hostile and very destructive primates on its doorstep as a case for culling and come and give homo sapiens a taste of what he's been doing to animal life on earth for nigh on 2 million years.... Good point, Mael. ALL of our problems have one real root cause. Too many people. And it makes no sense to implement something like the Kyoto Accords, or Kyoto II, or any other sort of planet-preserving measures...if the gains from them are wiped out by a further increase in population. But Uvas is right, too. There are far too many people who are willing to cry in alarm...about global warming, coral reef bleaching, threats to polar bears, PCB contamination, alar, DDT, you name it...when there is little, or questionable evidence to support the cause-of-the-moment. In fact, there is a whole industry out there based on prophecies of doom. My advice: Say Yes to ZPG, family planning, and celibacy. Say No to all other so-called concerned citizens who would curtail your freedom by regulating or abolishing or protecting this, that, or the other thing. Tackle the root cause, not the symptoms.

From: Susie Boffin Pretty much all of them unless you happen to believe the State Of Alaska one. So the ones you fail to produce? Gotcha. There is not ONE scientific study that shows declining population of bears. What we see is a lot of idle speculation that less arctic ice will mean less bears. One study on that matter shows that the bear population suffered back in the early 70's when the ice was especcially thick because of a few cold winters.

From: Uvas Umarov Yes, but the population was at 12,000 which then went to 15,000.
INCREASING bear numbers means MORE contact with humans. Therefore, the need for culling. The polar bear is a dangerous predator, not a cute fuzzy playtoy. Perhaps the humans need the culling? They were here first after all perhaps we should stop spreading into their natural territory? Crazy idea I know... That aside global warming is a issue and we need to do something about it. I rather all the billions going into a failed iraq war (which we all know is NEVER going to have positive results with the military only solution policy) and put all the cash into developing hybrid and fuel cell cars. If the money/time spent on the iraq waste was put onto solving global warming we'd be 1/2 way to a solution by now.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Or should we start with people you consider inferior? Like i said before, one human life is worth more than every damn bear on the planet. So our cars are causing the global warming on Mars? The polar ice caps on Mars are melting. The climate on Mars is warming. But hey there is no amount of human activity on Mars. So the warming must have another cause. Solar activity is the cause of global warming.

From: Maelstrom Janus and just how good would you be in the water up against a shark chris...youre in a wheel chair arent you ? Is that going to give you some advantage over this planets bigger predators I hadnt thought about.
Just pointing out that this is probably the lowest blow I've seen on these forums to date. You're really giving him grief because he's in a wheelchair? Seriously, that is below the belt. You should be ashamed of yourself. As far as I'm concerned, you lost 100% of your credibility right there. Try to form a coherent argument without resorting to pettiness, please. I'm sure you can do it. There are plenty of arguments that support your claims. Instead of employing tham, you're resulting to personal attacks and repeating the same claims over and over, none of which you have backed up. If I were you and I were tasked with forming a rebuttal, I would start with Uvas' claim that the polar bear population is growing. Chris' arguments about us being at the top of the food chain are red herrings - ignore them. Now, go find empirical data that suggests that the polar bear population is not growing. If that's not out there, show how the changing climate is expected to stop and reverse that growth trend, and eventually result in their extinction. If you can show that, you will have made an argument that people can respect, even if they don't agree with it.

So our cars are causing the global warming on Mars? The polar ice caps on Mars are melting. The climate on Mars is warming. But hey there is no amount of human activity on Mars. So the warming must have another cause. Solar activity is the cause of global warming. This is the type of selfish, superior minded, short sighted mentality that got us where we are in the first place. I don't need to volunteer myself because I am not trying to move into, urbanize current wild animal breeding grounds, migration paths. As for "one human life is worth more than every damn bear on the planet." you should add to the end of that comment "in my opinion" as thats what it is, your opinion and not fact. I OTOH feel every living wild creature is just as valuable as a human. No more, no less. This planet would be in much better shape if more people took this view as killing off species damaged the ecology and eventually a critical mass of damage will be reached. With it will be irreversible and the human race you value above all else will be harmed due to your ignorance and short sightedness. Keeping the planet and ecology is good condition is as much to OUR benefit as well as the animals. As for the whole solar heating theory crap, been debunked many times over. WE are causing global warming, period. the debate is over, time to get with the rest of the vast majority of those in the field of science. Only people still touting that line are those ignorant on the topic, paid and bought by big oil or the idiots (and their dwindling followers) in the white house. But what do I know, I am just a pagan witch (Wiccan) trying to do my part in helping the planet and ALL living things on it. You sound like the type who wouldn't blink a eye to strip mine the entire planet and kill anything in your way to make a buck while blaming the damage on solar flares or some such nonsense. I pity you. Goddess bless

I didn't realise that there are no forums anywhere on the internet to discuss issues such as Global Warming, and Polar Bears.

Oh I have no problem people debating it in the right place. Talking about it and making people aware of it is fine and I most definitely encourage it.
Just wasn't aware that a board for SL stuff, in the "Resident Answers" area, in a thread called "The Ecology of SL" was the right or appropriate place to discuss this.
"Just saying"
