Another decent thread brought to it's knees by residents who would rather show off their ignorance than contribute. Where is Strife?

He is takin a sabbatical(can we blame him?) and Aki will be monitoring the children until His return. i suggest the anti-testosterone suite Susie, it was how i was able to get my post up.;)

You do realize at one time the ice caps were not there. The poles were covered with vegetation and dinosaurs lived there.

and how much of the planet was covered by water at the time ... ;)

According to Graham Hancock, people did too.

In actual fact though Chris, I have to correct you. The ice caps have always been there. However, the earth's crust periodically undergoes what is referred to by Professor Charles Hapgood as "Crust Displacement" - meaning that the whole crust moves as a single piece suddenly. This has nothing to do with plate techtonics. Imagine the skin of an orange rotated over the fruit as a single piece. Dinosaurs and other lifeforms did live on continental Antarctica - however, at the time, Antarctica was 2000 miles further north than it is now. The actual pole itself however was still covered in ice. This is one explanation for the rapid expansion and retreat of ice-age glaciers - that they didn't retreat as such, we simply moved away from the, meaning there was no "ice age" as such, because infact we were in a place of ice rather than a time of ice.

Google Professor Hapgood (head of Geology at Harvard University in the 1950s) for more info. Einstien agreed with Hapgood's theories too, which I think lends weight.

You are the one making the claim that the caps melting will spell doom. Back up what you say. Enough of the planet was dry that life continued.

I'm sorry if you don't understand the scientific reports but it seems that many people are too blinded by personal and political opinions to understand such things.

Um, which scientific reports don't I understand?

Yet, the OP is the main offender here. One could almost suspect it was a deliberate ploy to start an argument.....if one were a cynica.

I don't see the OP as an offender. He asked a good question and mainly all I see is responses about polar bears which have nothing to do with his post.

Why? Because when the sea levels drop (as I explained before) your property will be less valuable because it no longer has a sea view?

Pretty much all of them unless you happen to believe the State Of Alaska one.

That's because you are clearly lacking in education. Unlike myself, Uvas and Chris, you have failed to provide any persuasive scientific evidence of your claims.

Susie - you clearly haven't been reading his posts. I don't really blame you for that though. I wish I hadn't either.

Gradual melting will allow for adaptation. The caps are not going to melt like an ice cube on a hot skillet. Dikes can be built, populations can move. Vast areas of Canada will become inhabitable and able to produce grain crops. The same with Russia. Humans are adaptable, it is what made us the top of the food chain.

Not a bit of it. I have referenced Professor Hapgood's work for starters, so that's already one more piece of evidence than you have submitted, and the point about sea levels dropping rather than rising requires only a moment of logical thought.

The fact still remains that you have clearly started this buffoonish thread in order to incite an argument, and I am bored enough to oblige.

One idiot who thinks he could beat any predatory animal by virtue of the fact he has a thumb ...

one who cites a man in charge of the explotation of natural resources as giving a fair reason to wipe out animal life..

and a third who thinks melting the ice caps will cause the worlds water level to drop

they should changes their names to Larry Curly and Mo

lol

Another scientific rebuttal. Well done. Of course, it is fact that sea levels will drop. This has been explained but your tiny mind was clearly unable to cope with it. I am proud of you. Excellent work.

It's still Friday; you're going nowhere until we've finished making fun of you.

As for hiding behind Chris - I have put forward several arguments independent of Chris to which you have chosen not to respond; I can only assume this is due to intellectual feebleness. If you read this forum regularly at all, you would know that it is rare for Chris and I to agree (the man thinks cowboys are cooler than pirates for God's sake!).

I'm a victim of my own generous spirit really - I just can't stand to see people suffering in ignorance. Really I should just let people carry on thinking their wrong opinions and leave them to it, but something compels me to want to help these poor unfortunates.

The regular polar bears are one thing; it's those armoured bears I'm worried about

While I agree, that armoured bears are a concern, I am a little worried that Phillip Pullman may be pulling our leg here.

His armoured bears all live in Norway, and the Arctic circle, and yet they all speak English.

I know many Scandinavians are excellent English-speakers, but all the same this strains credulity a little too far.

I think Mr Pullman should stop trying to write History books, and turn his hand to fiction.

I am envious of their opposable thumbs though, it must make it so much quicker to peel a banana.

I 2nd what Maelstrom said: Dinosaurs!!!

Aquatic life would be nice too. That was the 1st thing I noticed when I came to SL- the waters are as dead as those in the game Elderscrolls:Oblivion.
