Since the new CEO has "taken over" Second Life operations the place has become kind of shit

Yes it has been busier and there's no longer miles and miles of adfarms & brothels, but also the colourful character SL used to have is now also gone.

About 2 years ago you could go up and speak to anyone, you were guaranteed that they were either a greifer, a bot or a genuine person, things were pretty black & white then.

now SL reminds me more of London, or New York. It's all about the money, the business and status.

gone are the days of chilling at some party, the really funny protests & marches and the good 'ol RPing at some really kool but random tripped out sim.

Now nearly ALL of the mainland is just houses or the same malls over & over.

Before when i flew across the mainland I'd see all sorts of crazy and random builds, some great & some just awful, but now its just sooo so bland and boring. with the same prefabricated houses set for sale.

There are currently 4 main DarkRP/combat sims i know of, and 1 of them is shit (i'm sure some of the older forum dwellers will know what one i am talking of)

to add salt to injuries absolutely NO technicle progress has been made what so ever, all these new rules and polacies are great, but they must come with technical advancements to.

Where are our shared Windlight sky settings, are infinitely visible terrains, volumetric clouds, shaders, speedtree vegitation and the list goes on & on.

Either SL will end up folding in on itlself or they are planning something really big (SL 2.0?) that will blow us all away.

What are your opinions and thoughts on the issues?

Just to add some good ideas or moves LL could come up with.

I think the biggest and best move they could ever possibly do is to have free (or very very cheap) ad supported land, so all the really good builders who don't really have that much money can show off there builds.

maybe have a (no L$) rule and have adds that must be visible, maybe get those blue notice popouts but containing ads.

This would really bring back any culture that has been lost to to extortionate land prices.

They could put a massive land mass that has ad supported cheap as parcels there, ones that you only have to buy once and make sure you visit once a week or something.

Another good idea would be to allow us (and other server companies) to "plug" our own regions into SL for either a small fee or free. that in itself would bring SL's culture back up to scratch at no extra cost on LL's side, might even make them a bit mroe money (like they dont get enough already!)

I miss the casinos like Gold Rush. The ringing of the slot machines when someone hit it big. It had a wonderful Vegas feel to it. I miss sitting in on the Texas hold em games. Whalers sitting at the table smoking their stokies or the other kind of stokey has a great time. Whatever boyfriend at the time, would ask baby you need some money to buy you a new little pretty dress and I would bat my lashes and say yes Daddy.

I miss the worth camping at camping sites where you got to meet interesting people and actually earn something.

That is just a few of the things I miss.

I think Second Life has got better since I joined in Sept 2006, and that's not entirely as result of my joining!!!!

There have been lots of improvements - probably the biggest being WindLight.
Yes, there have been bad moments too - usually to do with performance / reliablity - but that is generally a lot better than it was too.

The SL I see today is the exact same SL I saw over a year ago. The only difference is that the fugly adfarms are gone. As for the wonky mainland builds, they're still there. I own one of them. (^_^)

Just hang out? I spend most of my days in the Kuula sandbox finding new ways to blow up physical cubes. Temp-rezzed physical prims rule my SL sometimes and they're a blast to play with. Crazy? Random? Totally! XD

A while back I was playing with looped sounds and llGetAgentInfo and made an attachment that loops Chii's "Pantsu - Pantsu - Pantsu" routine while I walk around. You wanna talk about a good random laugh? There it is. (^_^)y

At least for me SL has lost a lot of the whimsey that got me in the beginning. More and more it is becomin a distillation of RL, with too much of RL's baggage bring btought along.
The fun factor has decreased.

This is what I was thinking a few months ago. I've recently started spending more time rebuilding my house and seem to be finding a bit of fun in learning some of this building stuff -- which I have been actively avoiding so far in my 2 yrs here. So, a bit of the wonder is coming back again.

(and recently meeting a terrific guy has helped there too)

I really don't know.

When I arrived, two years ago, everything was new (by definition). I saw whimsical builds everywhere. Yes, I visited casinos, and strip clubs, and sat on camping chairs chatting with fellow campers.

Now I'm an "old, experienced" avatar. It takes a good deal more to spark that first-time sense of wonder.

And yes, there's a lot more "same old, same old" stuff out there. Same old malls, same old prefabs. I don't think that's to lay at the new CEO's feet though. There are a lot more people here now. Most of the newcomers are not imaginative, creative pioneers like the people who came early. And so we see more imitation, less originality. As SL grows in numbers, I think this is inevitable. Originality is always a scarce commodity.

So yeah...I'm experienced now, maybe a little jaded, and the Originality Quotient is lower around here than it used to be.

But...it's still there. I still run across things that make me laugh, make me think, or make my jaw drop in astonishment. The magic is still there, you just have to look a little more to find it.

I have no idea what that means. Is it naughty.

I said above that I think SL has improved generally. But on the matter of losing some of its whimsy - is that because the whimsy has become commonplace? If anybody can live in a giant teacake and drive a wobbly pink jelly car, they become so normal you no longer notice them.

/me thinks that this thread demonstrates an exemplary combination of nostalgia and delusionary thinking . . .

Pep ( . . . which will doubtless run and run until eventually the participants realise that they are wasting as much time as those wanting to change LL's collective mind about a banlist for search words)

Perhaps Gandhi was misquoted, and what he really said was "spend the change you want to see in the world"?

Like all things SL has changed as it has grown. Chaos, you sound tired - take a break and come back refreshed. By that time SL will've changed some more.

The "whimsy" probably disappeared as a result of the bad economy IRL. People are less prepared to risk money on things that SL doesn't appear to already support.

I think folks still need to come to terms with what it's all about. I'm still very much a newbie in comparison to many of those posting to these forums (no deference to experience implied), yet I've been spending a very high percentage of my time in-world since I registered in July of 2007, and I have to say that SL has improved no end on the technical front.

Certain trends give me pause for thought such as experienced residents taking it upon themselves to tutor newbies in behaviour for no apparent reason other than that is just the way they like to think folk should behave. This has reflected noticeably on the general tenor of behaviour in SL as far as I am concerned: by and large, folks are just boring in the way they go about socialising these days whilst remaining gawddam ignorant about the basics of managing client, inventory and how to even programme and wear an AO.

Otherwise a good deal of sims are stunning whereas just as many are crap. Recent comments about the disenchantment of corporate entities regarding their in-world presence and their bewildered withrawal of investment reflect the ubiquitous nature of the problem: it's your world, your imagination, don't be disappointed - whatever the constraints, it really is just about what your imagination allows.
