Ah yes, anyone who is VAT registered can offset VAT they pay for goods and services against the VAT they charge their customers. Someone still pays the VAT though lol

The monthly price I agreed to pay has increased.

When I agree to pay $50 a month - I agree to pay $50 a month, no more, no less. Any tax must be subtracted from that. If an additional tax is suddenly applicable, my agreement to pay $50 a month is unchanged, and the additional tax must be subtracted from that $50 until an agreement to pay a different amount is agreed (e.g. by giving prior notice).

At least that is how things work in the UK.

Matthew

If LL had not charged you this tax, would you still be liable to your government for paying it?
If your government had found out that you were not paying it would they assess it to you?

Everyone who pays tier pays the same amount, any tax is extra. You owe it to your government. LL is only collecting it for them.

Wait wait wait wait wait.

If I live in America andpay tier to LL, a company based in America, why should I pay taxes to Europe? That doesn't make sense.

coco

About as much sense as someone in the US using a US credit card to pay LL (a company base in the US) in US $ being charged a foreign transaction fee by the credit card company...

Stupid yet sincere question: Do Germans pay VAT?

Raymond - Mehrwertsteuer. :)

From: Irene LeShelle
Here are the 2006 rates for the countries who were members in 2006 :
Germany 16%

They changed that. It's 19 % now, except for books and food (7 %).

Hm, good thing I didn't tier up then.

In the UK, VAT is applicable to services as well as goods, and anything bought/provided outside the EU is subject to local VAT and import duty if applicable.

I dunno about being VAT registered, that's normally for businesses with a greater than £50,000 turnover I think.

I think it is the suppliers responsibility rather than the purchaser!

No, we're generally quite well nannied over taxes and other people do it all for us, unless we're self employed but VAT is a sales tax, it's the responsibility of the seller to collect it.

it's also the responsibility of the seller to state whether VAT is not included in an advertised price.

Then if I was LL, I would cease all operations in the EU.

I agree. It doesn't make sense to me either. According to HM Customs & Excise, I only pay VAT on supplies made in the United Kingdom or the Isle of Man. As far as I'm aware I am obtaining these supplies from the United States.

You *have* to be VAT registered if your turnover is over £50,000 per annum.

You *can* VAT register if your turnover is below that - but in addition to reclaiming VAT on anything you buy, you have to start paying VAT on anything you sell (basically you fill in a VAT returning detailing the VAT on what you have sold and what you have bought and paying or reclaiming the difference).

So if your turnover is below £50,000 VAT registering is not really going to make you better off unless you buy more then you sell!

This does mean a business with a turnover of less than £50,000 and which isn't VAT registered does not have to charge VAT.

Every year when I file my state taxes, I am asked if I bought anything on which Kentucky sales tax was due that I did not pay. Just because the seller is supposed to collect does not relieve me of the responsibility of paying it. Of course in all the years I have prepared taxes professionally, no one has ever answered that question yes when I asked it of them.

I've never had to file my own tax returns in over twenty years Chris. My tax is taken out of my wages. When i shop, anything that is VAT applicable must include this in the advertised price. So in a store, the price tag already includes VAT, there's no chance of me knowing if they haven't added it to the price tag, it's their responsibility to do so.

as a uk resident with half a sim .........ouch

I guess this is what happenes when you stick a Chancellor into number 10.

Im really pissed at this as im anti labour anyway but I accept it as it IS a service and VAT is to be expected I guess. I had worked finances out based on this monthly cost.
LL has offices all over the place ... brighton is the hub of techy folk in the UK ... and regardless of wether they STARTED as an American company ..... thire BULT business is overseas internationaly. so wether your USA or not ... it doesnt matter BUT if you are US .. you will also end up paying tax on your service cost if it aplies

Maybe we should be saying to LL .... do not you not feel that paying X per month for something that doesnt exist and have no value is a littl extorionate ..... after all they dont pay VAT on the servers.... plus as I am now verified as being old enough and a UK citizen to pay tax ... does this make me verified by proxy ?????

Wait a minute, so I'm assuming Americans pay no sales tax at all for tier fees in SL? If there's any tax included in the tier fee already that would mean Europeans were being taxed twice and being taxed on tax.

in america, if you buy something from another state there is no sales tax, so a user in say texas would not pay sales tax on items they bought in california, online or mail order.

this is a HUGE HUGE tax and i do feel sorry for you folks overseas having to pay so much extra for a video game in the usa

True - but we are talking about UK VAT here not Kentucky sales tax, the tax rules in the UK work differently than in the US. A good example of the differences is that in I think every US state (certainly the one's I've visited) prices are always quoted *without* sales tax included. In the UK, prices are always quoted *with* VAT included (unless explcitly stated otherwise).

If I go into a shop and spend £10.00.. I come out having spent the £10. I dont get to the till then pay tax on top of that £10.00 the Store owner incorprates into his pricing in the first instance.. before I even get to the til then I walk out with my goodies.

Seeing the tax added over and above what people have been paying is what will get most backs up, I had already tiered down but still get stung at the beginning of Oct because of over lap.

I do have to say to the forum cartel.. I am sorry guys but I will need to remove my 512 tier as I am going to down grade to basic... :( I just think its so bad LL have given no warning of this to people... there are budgets to consider for some I am sure.

I agree with paying our taxes, though I wish they would spend them better. Its just that LL made NO announcement on this... that I find very shocking,

Anyone in the UK can register as sole trader and register for VAT (which is basically exemption), although if you earn over £64,000 you have to by law anyway (my hubby owns his own business :)).

BUT then you'd have to declare sales and expenses and charge VAT on any products and services you provided, plus prove you were a legitimate business, and declare business related assets (including land and tools of the trade etc which could cover all kinds of sl assets) so this could be the start of having to charge VAT on land & items sold within sl, which opens a whole can of worms, and whatever ll may say that definitely gives sl assets a rl value.

This could get very complicated!

Not true, Kentucky tries to collect sales taxes on anything you did not pay sales taxes on. Magazine subscriptions are a big one they try to catch. But if I went to a state with no sales tax and buy something I am legally obligated to pay sales tax to Kentucky on it.

I didnt get a Voting ballot form ....

Im sorry for my language but labour can go fuck off ..... they tax blindly all the time
LL should include Taxaction BEFORE pricing not AFTER ..... as said before ... VAT is a tax thats included into the sales price .... one could say that LL have broken the goods and services act for introducing VAT as an unadvertised cost therefor illeagal

This is my expectation as well, Ciaran. Are there any UK/EU based lawyers who can give us some impartial advice on this? For my tier to go up 17.5% overnight, unannounced, stinks, and I am feeling litigious!
