https://secure-web1.secondlife.com/corporate/vat.php
In accordance with the sales tax regulations of European Union countries in which our Residents live, we must collect and remit Value Added Tax, or VAT, from Residents. Who should be charged VAT? Currently, only Residents who live in the European Union are charged VAT. The EU allows people and companies to register for VAT exemption, which we abide by. How does Linden Lab determine who to charge VAT for? When you registered your account, you told us what country you live in. If that country is in the EU, then VAT is applied. If you say that you come from a different country that doesn't charge VAT, it's very likely that discrepancies between your IP address and your declared country would get caught in our risk detection system and may cause your account to be flagged for review or even suspended. What are the items for which Linden Lab charges VAT? Anything that you pay Linden Lab for will have VAT applied. This includes:
How can I tell what items had VAT charged? Your account history page will display the transactions you made and the VAT charged on each one, if applicable. I have a VAT registration ID that makes me exempt from VAT. How do I enter it? If you're registering for a new account, there's a step where you can enter your VAT registration ID. If you have an existing account for which you want to enter your VAT registration ID, click here to enter it. Basically it just got 17.5% more expensive to use Second Life for anybody living in Europe. _____________________

I assumed I was paying the relevant taxes already, this is the first time I've been charged this, I hope I'm not going to get back charged.
The very least they could have done was to tell me this was coming. |

The very least they could have done was to tell me this was coming. Premium accounts have just become about £7 UK pounds more expensive. Own private islands? Your tier just increased by $52 dollars a month for each island you own. When I buy stuff from American companies, I pay tax according to the laws of the state receiving the money. This is undoubtedly happening because they decide to accept payments in Brighton (UK) without thinking through the consequences. Assholes. _____________________

I couldn't believe it when I read this, I had no idea that this was about to hit the EU Residents.. Myself being one such resident, I am extrememly P***ed off! What a bloody week this has been. First of all, cigarrettes have gone up, which now makes them almost 10 US$ a pack, and now this. For me, the two have some similarities..
No matter how much cigs go up in price,I'm still gonna buy them, still going to smoke them I suppose the same is true of SL,even though the expense has risen, I don't think it will stop me from being there.... But surely some warning should have been given to everyone, and if it was and I missed it, then I apologise..... AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG |

Two things:
1) another huge hit to an already hurting SL economy 2) Their method of communicating vital policy changes to us SUCKS! Shame on you, Linden Lab. _____________________

Just in case nobody realises, this is the sky is falling thread for weeks to come.
![]() I'm a bit pissed TBH, but I'll just sell up and go if it works out too expensive. I already thought prices were borderline. Shit will fly if they try to backdate the tax charges. I'm pretty sure law requires them to indicate if sales tax is NOT being applied if they're processing payments in the UK. _____________________

*sigh* Thanks for that. It would have been 'nice' if LL had blogged/emailed it.
Well I've just entered my VAT# - Ohhhhh! Guess I must be an adult then!!!! My account month has just ticked over, so I suppose they've slapped on the VAT. At the risk of appearing a tad negative:- ... LL !!!! WTF... Can you get *anything* even half-right????? |

We pay 17.5% in the UK. It might be a little less in some European countries. We do pay income tax and from a European POV, I know the rate is much lower here than in Italy because I worked over there briefly and couldn't believe how much was (quite legally) being deducted from my wage .. but I think they do pay less sales tax. All I can say is 17.5%??? OMFG! _____________________

Once again it comes without warning!!
09-27-2007 12:36
So I've just checked my account page and my tier fees have increased because I now have to pay value added tax. Did anyone get a blog annoucnement or a message about this? Message? Announcement? Ha! Even though this will probably end up helping people like me who rent mainland to residents, I am sickened by how this is all going down. Only a matter of time before I wake up one day to see I have been driven out of SL by some sort of buried-in-the-website policy change. The way they run this company is outrageous. _____________________

All I can say is 17.5%??? OMFG! Yes, wow. I think mine is something like 5% . . . it's been awhile since I last looked, though. Actually it was 4.5% last time I looked, but I assume it is at least 5% now. _____________________

It would have been nice to be warned of this before it was implimented having only just purchased land this month to the amount I have worked out I can cover via sales.
So I assume now that I am paying 17.5% VAT, $L are now real currency? I don't pay my tier via credit card or PayPal, I pay it via inworld sales. _____________________

Is it really surprising, though. how many decisions have they made and implemented without considering the impact or announcing it properly. I've dumped all my land before and hardly logged in for months due to ridiculous policy decisions .. but this one is different than any other. It hits me in the pocket very directly, but nowhere near as much as it's gonna hit some of my friends. I find it very difficult to _like_ Linden Lab at times like this, and I know sky is falling threads are fun because they tend to distort things out of all proportion, but I think if they don't offer deductions to European customers, you could find masses of people just dropping out. I have two annual premium accounts and some mainland besides, and can say with certainty that I will not have them this time next year. I might still be in game because maybe I'll find something suitable on a private island (never say never and all that).. but who knows how this will play out .. and what will happen next? It just gets tiring. Too tiring to bother with to be frank. I'm not going to get an ulcer screaming at the idiotic people in charge of this platform when I can just close the application and forget about it. _____________________
