Here's an additional point subject to your pleasurable review. A certain unnamed person recently explained this to me. The techwiki crew keeps new residents from succeeding in business by convincing them that it's okay to just shove a few prims into a telemall stall and set them for sale. The idea that you don't need to actually work to be successful in Second Life is preached by techwikis to new residents thus ensuring their failure. I can't even phrase that such that it can be said with a straight face.
And it came from a prominant telemall owner who would, of course, never stoop to lending that impression to new residents. Oh god I can't even type that without laughing out loud. |

That's really surreal. I had this thread opened up on my screen, ready to bump. I think I have a minor change to this though. In order to keep from shrinking, we should probably move beyond that techi wiki culture. I have calculated, based on GOM volume, that we have been barely growing over the last few months (nevermind what the propaganda says). Free accounts are not going to entice people to want to contribute to the techi wiki, either. Im not sure how moving beyond this "techi wiki" "culture" you describe will help SL at all... I mean - without LSL, building tools, texture, clothing or animation upload, SL would be nothing but a place to stand around in generic avatars and chat. How do you propose we move beyond it? Im pretty sure the guy/gal who was making Tringo didnt know that it was going to explode into what it is now... (s)he just thought of something that would be fun to play and went with the idea. Some wanderers happened upon the creator and his/her friends playing a game called "Tringo", and said "ooh, thats cool, can we play?", and the rest is history. The value of an idea should never be determined by the popularity of the idea, even if Tringo never took off, it would still be something fun the creator does with his/her friends. Taking away someone's ability to experiment tears out the essence of SL. Really, the reason SL has a LSL wiki is because scripters thought LL's documentation was too cryptic and sometimes just plain incorrect. We needed a place to share what we knew about LSL with each other and with the rest of SL. A wiki is perhaps the most open form of collaboration you can find - people simply pick a name for themselves and can make any modification or post any comment they want. When something looks confusing on the wiki, its not there because we want it to be confusing, its there because the original author didnt go into enough detail on it. When something is confusing, post a comment asking about it - that moves it to the top of the RecentlyCommented page, where more people notice it. I have yet to conceptualize a scenerio where more advanced development tools would detriment any part of the community. By being able to do more, creators make more interesting stuff, stuff that may or may not interest the masses, but because it was created it at least has the chance to. ==Chris _____________________

This thread comes from another era. The premise, I think, is accurate, but at the time this was orignally posted it seemed quite absurd to suggest that SL ever needed to attract "ordinary people". A lot of the older messages here are actually very funny now, but at the time, they were quite serious. Amazing how far we've come just in a few months! Buster |

I pity the people who visit the forums for the first time today. Actually, I pity the people who visit the forums most any day so that's nothing new...
