I generally keep a fairly organized inventory, but I do have lots of duplicates of items, which I will try and clean up after finals. :D

I foresee a veritable cornucopia of upcoming yard sales in the near future...

This is really a great idea. for all that it's a temporary fix, at best, it's so wonderful to see the community coming together to do what we can to help out. Yay SL users!

Don't say that I've never contributed to the fabric of this Second Life. I cleared out around 500 items from my Inventory on the weekend, not including the emptying of a Trash folder big enough to store half of the state of Montana.

I'll do it, though I'm a feather weight as far as inventory goes.

I started cleaning mine out yesterday, but crashed while doing it. I plan on finishing it up today. I have already deleted a few hundred items and emptied my trash. I also created some folders to organize things.

I had cleaned out many of mine to earlier today.... Oooopppsssss! But I don't mind creating a prim on the land and storing some of my useless.. I mean, less used! items. If I'm storing 'em, it means I don't care really if something happens to them, but just might need them sometime in the future (I need a packrat avatar!!)

Yes I have collected a small warehouse of clothes that I have either bought or given to me from wonderful designer friends that I no longer wear due to them having newer stuff :)

I hate the thought of throwing them away so I might do that also and just put them in long term storage and if something happens I will not be totally upset :)

I asked Philip Linden tonight at his impromptu meeting in Dore if it made sense to delete inventory.

He said not to.

It will overload the system doing that all at once, he said.

What is way more important now is not searching inventory, he said.

Cleaning out extra inventory will be useful, but right now (while we are still under heavy load) it will probably only make things worse because the cost to delete or move items in inventory is fairly high.

What you could all best do to help right now (until login performance is restored) is simply avoid use of your inventory as much as you can (keep the window closed, basically), and in particular avoid doing a search in your inventory since that causes the worst load by needing to download your whole inventory.

If you have and scripted objects receiving email that you do not need in-world, delete them. Also if you are frequently checking for email, reduce the polling interval.

After login performance is reasonable again, deleting unneeded inventory items would help.

We've isolated the database load problems to inventories. You can help everyone by limiting your use of your inventory tonight.

-- don't use search
-- don't clean it out

Nothing horrible will happen to you individually if you do, but the combined use slows the grid down for everyone.

We will continue to monitor the load and let you know when we feel confident you can use the inventories without problem.

I missed that conversation. Must have been on IRC. Could you post a log of it? :D

The conversation was in the Welcome Area. It was an informal meeting. I don't know if you post conversations with Lindens that are not a formal town meeting or formal public conversation, is that a TOS violation like notecarding? I guess I'll just put it on my third-party blog then where the TOS rules never apply and I can do what I want, ok?

Meanwhile, Stoneself was there and many others whom are your friends and comrades. He did indeed say this, because I asked him. I went against the conventional wisdom that we're all to have a selfless subbotnik, and asked whether it really *helps* to do this (as distinct from posturing in the LL metagame of getting pos-ratings for selfless oldbie activity LOL).

It doesn't help. And to say it will help some alternate next Tuesday from now isn't the point. It's not something worth doing now and encouraging others to do.

Instead, he asked for something much, much harder -- not to use your inventory, or at least not search in it.

Everyone can do that much, and while it won't give anybody private or public glory or enable them to say they "saved" SL, I'd encourage them to do it. :D

Its that attitude that perpetuates the FIC, the tekkiwikkiati remarks..."

Ooo... 'tekkiwikkiati'... sounds so neat.. can I join too or would that be 'initiated'... hmm.. and ooo will we get our own funny hats, I so love those... oh wait that would add to the inventory, wouldn't it.. damn.

Seriously though, Panda count me. I love my dancing sheep dearly and all my other crap but for the greater good I will release their data from this world. :P

And, as for the naysayers... what Philip Linden was basically saying was he can't EXPECT to ask his users to go around and delete their hard earned inventory items due to a greater issue mostly on their part as an oversight to the exponential growth of SL population and thus inventory. But even though he can't ask that of US.. we can still choose to "do our part" now that we have this knowledge.. if one chooses to. nuff said.

We are not Feted SL Martyrs (although if that group title comes with a neat hat I am so there!) ... we are mainly just being a bit proactive and thoughtful.

Don't like the idea... don't participate.

:)

ok... back to my corner of Darkwood where I will be spending quality time with my beloved sheep before deletion.. thank you.

Really? I would like to see some IRC conversations posted. But then they would probably be deleted. :D

If you had bothered to read the thread before you posted, you would have seen that we are in consensus about waiting to clean out our inventories.

See you next alternate Tuesday!

I have so much inventory stuff and I've only been around a year or so. What would be nice is an event where I can just give away my clothes and stuff to newbies. I mean, do I *really* need the 500 outfits I own :D Hmmm, maybe I do. But textures, I promise to devote a few hours at least to delete those. Easier to just upload what I need rather than shift thru hundreds of badly labeled files.
