After the patch, when people start being able to access SL with greater ease, I would like to invite everyone to participate in an event more fun than Tringo AND SLingo! From Wed, May 18th to Wed, May 25th, let's clean up our inventories. This event is not about entitlement. This event is about taking care of something that is important to you, your SL experience! If you feel entitled to an unlimited inventory, then great... simply do not participate. Start a new thread about how you are entitled and how SL has ruined your life with log in issues. Otherwise, post here to commit to an inventory clean-out! I will be creating a one-prim plaque that is free for all participants. Maybe LL can show us the amount of data that we deleted after the week is up!

I commit to it. Though it will bloody KILL me. Cause I already clean it up for duplicates and so forth all the time. And I do so love having anything (free) anyone might need, or which I can pull out at the drop of a hat for a fun visual joke.

coco I already emptied my trash. I was a bloody fool for not thinking to do so earlier. There were probably 5k objects in there... It's tough for me to go through my inventory and actually delete anything, though. I always feel as if I might need the item later on. I shall have to prioritize and begin eliminating those items which I can part with. Doing so would be easier if I could tell how massive my inventory actually is. An item count is fine, but it doesn't actually mean anything to me. Are 5000 objects the equivalent of 1 KB? 1 MB? 1 GB? I'd like to know a rough estimate, so I can tell exactly how gluttonous I am being and begin to curb the behavior.

From: StoneSelf Karuna i wonder how sl will behave under that much database activity. Well, if the event is a week long, I don't see it being a huge problem. If the numbers are staggering, then I am sure LL will let us know.

A perhaps silly question
05-15-2005 10:57
Since we can store things in the contents of a prim....
Would moving unused inventory items into prims and filling these prims do anything to help the situtation.
For example I have over 100 stone textures that I uses rarely. If I put all these in a prim then put the prim in inventory. Would this do a darn thing to help? or would the server now see 101 things instead of 100

I'll commit to this. I appreciate the efficiency. I'm curious though, if you take 100 things from a folder and put them in a box and then get the box, does that save anything, storage-wise? LOL... like Darkness said. GREAT TIMING!

The size of that prim in the database would just become the sum of all the stuff inside it. Those items would still have to be stored in the database. If the prim were stored in-world, I think that would save on streaming the inventory on login. But that's a risky proposition.

Actually, it might significantly decrease load. When you open your inventory, or issue a search command, what you need to transfer is merely the names, types, and keys of every object. Each object's inventory is only transfered when you actually rez it and look in the contents tab.

There is no way that users have TB of inventory if that's all there is to it.

There is no way that users have TB of inventory if that's all there is to it. That confuses me also... and shouldn't the inventory list of names and keys be cached on the user's computer? Seems to me that our inventories should only be hitting the asset server when we add items to them, rename things, or delete items, or when we rez things. Inventory search should happen locally, not on the asset server.

How about a box up our rarely used things party?

Count me in Panda!! I haven't deleted anything from my inventory since I started in September 2003. I even have event notecards from back when the Linden Liasons personally handed them out by request daily!
