From: Biscuit Beckenbauer This is the most useless thread ever.
Congratulations, you all win at the internet. wow, it took this thread to get biscuit to post on the forums? LOL! Welcome Biscuit! Have you been here the whole time? I just fled what Boyfriend is doing in the Land & Economy forum and came upon this thread... ... horrifying and funny at the same time... and how depressing that someone would make such a racist avatar... i guess he accomplished what he was after... that "90%" racist crack the av-maker wrote does win the "most offensive comment on the forums" for September... i hope it wins a response from LL

People who seek to elicit reactions are commonly known as trolls, and eventually banned. "Eliciting reaction" is also commonly known as "seeking attention" which is generally regarded as a sign of emotional immaturity, or even a personality disorder. I just can't believe someone would have the nerve to openly defend such a position.

From: Weedy Herbst Ever heard of a Limey? I'm sure you have. I case you have not, let me fill you in.
Long ago sailors sucked on limes to prevent scurvy whist asea. Any Brit I know, finds it as a derogatory term.
Its not just the lime or the watermelon nor the chicken for that matter. Put them together and the message is bigotry and intolerance. Nothing less. I have never taken the word Limey to be a derogatory term. I'm sure it can be used as one, like the word 'Yank'. But I always assumed that more often than not it was used as an affectionate familiarity, as 'Yank' often is over here. Sorry to discover that isn't the case.

From: Eboni Khan It is not an obscure reference. Really anything from an Ameriacan hating European like yourself has to be taken with a serious grain of salt.
Enabran, I can tell you that like Roberta, I had never knowingly come across the water melon reference until this forum, and like her, until I read this thead, the chicken one was unknown to me as well. You will probably brand me as an American-hater as well, but I have to say this. America is not the world; sometimes it seems easy for some people to forget this. Roberta's query was a genuine one, and expressed a genuine concern that she might have unintentionally offended someone. I felt your response to her was inappropriate, and if it were me I would have already IMd her with an apology.

From: pandastrong Fairplay You need to go be a *edited* somewhere else. who decides that this is racist?? What if he really is a black dude irl who like watermellon and fried chicken? and why is it racist? I see nothing wrong with these foods. both are really tasty and enjoyed by many people. The only one who should be offended here is Torley!

Never made any mention of America hating.

From: Eboni Khan WTF is a content Jew? I have never seen the term in these forums until now. Please elaborate. Ask Nolan he tossed the phrase around. As a Jew I was highly offended and I wondered why Panda didnt comment about that remark when it was made. Guess thats what "friendship" tolerates. No its not revisionist history Eboni, it really happened and some pretty racist stuff was deleted by moderators. There is no reason to get on the offense about this because from reading your posts I can assure you that we are on the same page on this one. There is no reason to trash a belief or cause because of personal dislike for the speaker. Whether its directed at people of color, asians, jews, or sexual preference, etc the following post is right and applies to all the racial slams we have seen posted: From: Weedy Herbst I agree 100%
Unless someone lived under a rock for a lifetime, anyone can infer that a black person eating chicken and watermelon is a racial slur much like a KK outfit, or Nazi garb.
It's bigotry, intolerant and highly offensive. Nothing less.
LL will freak when they see this.

From: Nolan Nash It seems that Katy feels that my analogy makes me a racist, however. I was asked to explain it by Katy and one other poster, which I did. The other poster accepted that it was an analogy, and thanked me for elucidating. I apologized for being insensitive. Katy never responded, except to ban me from her sim (intransigent indeed!), where I don't go anyway... I admitted that it wasn't a very good analogy, due to the completely understandable sensitivity of those who lost loved ones to the Holocaust. Poor political analogy? Yes. Racism? Absolutely not. It's of note that my post still stands, intact. I guess the mods weren't about to hold Katy's hand as she took the plunge toward absurd, selective interpretation, to "bolster" her argument.
As far as the hats go, don't waste your time folks. In the past - I have - too many times, only to find they feed on it. They feel it proves their pseudo-anti-status-quo behavior is justified. Nolan, it was a racist remark and it was. You would not have apologized were it not. I never called you a racist and repeating that accusation wont make it so. In fact at the time all I did was ask the same question Eboni asked, what is a content Jew? Insulting me to deflect away from your embarassment at having to make yet another public apology on the forums for losing it in post wont change anything. Your insults dont mean anythign and my objection to the phrase "content jew" was not taking "the plunge toward absurd, selective interpretation, to "bolster" her argument." I am curious, how did you know that I chose to exclude you from entering my land if you dont go there? hmmm..Get over it.

Personally, I went to your sim for the first (and last) time just to see if you could possibly be that petty and juvenile. I wouldn't have even noticed that I'd been banned except you made a public comment about it. Don't worry, though. I'm putting together a support group for the banned and voiceless. We're all trying to cope with the terrible loss of not being able to visit the Moon.

I cannot help but compare this thread with a montage from Spike Lee's quintessential film Do the Right Thing: MOOKIE Dago, wop, garlic-breath, guinea, pizza-slinging, spaghetti-bending, Vic Damone, Perry Como, Luciano Pavarotti, Sole Mio, nonsinging motherfucker. PINO You gold-teeth, gold-chain-wearing, fried-chicken-and-biscuit-eatin', monkey, ape, baboon, big thigh, fast-running, three-hundred-sixty- degree-basketball-dunking spade Moulan Yan. STEVIE You slant-eyed, me-no-speak- American, own every fruit and vegetable stand in New York, Reverend Moon, Summer Olympics '88, Korean kick-boxing bastard. OFFICER LONG Goya bean-eating, fifteen in a car, thirty in an apartment, pointed shoes, red-wearing, Menudo, meda- meda Puerto Rican cocksucker. KOREAN CLERK It's cheap, I got a good price for you, Mayor Koch, "How I'm doing," chocolate-egg-cream-drinking, bagel and lox, B'nai B'rith asshole.
MISTER SEÑOR LOVE DADDY Yo! Hold up! Time out! Time out! Y'all take a chill. Ya need to cool that shit out... and that's the truth, Ruth.
And Mr. Lee probably knows more about the subject and has thought harder about it than all of us combined.

From: Introvert Petunia And Mr. Lee probably knows more about the subject and has thought harder about it than all of us combined. I like Spike Lee's work but I dont think he holds a monopoly on opinion. Another view is expressed by James Baldwin: "If we know, then we must fight for your life as though it were our own…. For if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night." James Baldwin:

Pointing out the picture is important because, if anything is going to change, we need to have these discussions. I am not perfect--far, far from it. I demonstrated a great deal of insensitivity when I laughed at a picture posted a week or two ago. For that, I am sorry. I wish I could take it back, but I am learning. This is why.

From: Enabran Templar Weren't you boasting about it awhile back? Just sayin'. I joked about it, smile and all, but dont recall mentioning names of those whom I prefer to not entertain on my land. Edited to add: I recall saying I also mute, yet since I was able to read the post there was obviously no mute in effect. It wasnt bragging, it was a joke, although I know it is difficult at times to discern tone and intent from the written words of one we dont know. So I will tell you...WAS SAID AS A JOKE!

From: James Baldwin If we know, then we must fight for your life as though it were our own…. For if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night. (cf. post #169) The capacity for many to dwell on past attrocities and a sense of persecution never fails to amaze me. Self-victimization starts at home and is wretched stance from which to make forward progress. -- signed, someone whose progenitors have suffered millenia of persecution probably largely due to their self-declaration as the "chosen ones", their steadfast refusal to adopt the prevailing social norms (not beliefs, no one can see your beliefs) and their prescribed annual ritual designed to inculcate concepts of "chosen", "different", "persecuted", "never forget", and "make sure you pass on these concepts".

From: Kujila Maltz ...(stuff).... I don't know about the other posters on this thread, but my "avatar under 18" alarm is ringing on every post *you* are making. I dont think you are mature enough to even understand why folks might get upset about this. It's not about the image of a black man eating a watermelon (lots of black people enjoy watermelon I assume), its about the intent. The intent here is obviously racist especially since a similar picture on the same site is labeled with a racial epithet. As such it's against the rules we all signed when we joined up, and pretty much a low offensive thing to do. (sooooo tempted to add "racist douchebag" at the end ) but I won't

I have to admit - many times I've had to think about what is more racist and offensive: crudely blatant symbolism and violent reaction to race, or the subtle and pernicious racism of self-professed "sensitive" types who gang-bang the issue for their own intellectual gratification. The symbolisms depicted in the pictures were cruel and hurtful. But there are ways to react to such things that are constructive and worthwhile, and there are ways that are not.
