I probably lack cultural information but, just how is this AV racist?
He's black, afro hair, very cliché but certainly it doesn't make it racist.
Or is it the chicken and KFC that does it?

I think the mix of it all is just plain offencive but yes the watermelon and "fried Chicken" puts it over the edge.. then the gloating shit posting up a bigger image to supplement the one Reallyrick brought to our attention like anyone with half a brain wanted to see it again was just a kick in the nuts..
TBH though I have no clue what W-hat is meant to mean... and I dont wanna I dont think

Early in the thread the defenders mention black comedy.

black comedy does not mean comedy at the expense of Black people.

black comedy means comedy that has a dark theme and serious undertone.

A racist image that makes racists laugh - is not black comedy.
Its a racist joke. Simple as that.

To be more specific its a Racist Joke refering to African Americans - the American part is why the Europeans dont understand the refference.

The widespread use of slavery followed by the cruel and insulting treatment of blacks in America in our country's History has led to references that Americans are likely to understand easily.

The use of the N- word, Segregated bathrooms and water fountains, and Watermelon and fried Chicken references would be among those.

The picture is in poor taste. Its blatantly racist. Its offensive and the intent is indeed worse than the strerotype.

It seems to me that the W-hatever folk enjoy pissing people off, and to them the end justifies the means.

Seems like as long as your mad and offended W-hat is happy.

I'm just curious...how many african americans in this thread are offended? (not saying that they shouldn't be, just wondering if they are, they do have every right to be) Would it have been offensive if an African American had posted the picture or created the avie?

I understand that many are offended, I'm just wondering why? I'm not saying your being offended is wrong, but personally I don't understand being offended on someone else's behalf or being offended by something not directed towards you, either by nationality, religion, personal attack, etc... I saw the pic and was like...hmm...that's a strange thing to do, it'll cause trouble for sure, but I wasn't offended, because I personally have nothing to be offended about. If I were African American, maybe I would have been offended.

I'm black (most days) and it didn't offend me. I'm completely desensitized to that sort of crap. That is the short and ineffective route to insulting Black people; I mean that joke is old as the hills. Now "African American" that is probably the most offensive label that has been forced upon me, and I cringe every time I hear it.

Eboni - I had no idea about the African American thing. I'm a teacher in a mostly Black district and we are encouraged by the adminstration to only use African American. Interesting!

Africa is a continent. A continent made of thousands of different ethnicities and tribes. Just labeling people African American is an insult to their ancestors, and just flat out stupid.

My step-brothers feel the same way. Their reasoning is that they are "American" as they were born here. So they feel weird having the "African" put in front. And it isn't that they are not interested in their cultural history, quite the opposite. When we talked about it years ago, they asked me how I would feel being called a "Cherokee-Sicilian-American". I did think it would seem weird.

I'm black (most days)

Can I be black the days that you're not? You can be a short irish indian chick.

I'd also like to be pakistani 2 days out of the month, if anyone has a few days free for trade.

I'm asking this because I don't want to be inadvertantly offending my students or their families, and out of a genuine desire to understand preferances so..

Would you guess that the majority of Black Americans feel this way? I think the reasoning of our administrators is that they think that calling someone Black is derogatory.

Generally I don't refer to someone's color, ethnicity, or religion, the only time it can't be avoided is when describing someone's appearance. If my principal ever heard me say anything other than African American, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Asian, or European, I'd be in a bit of trouble. It's a shame we have to be so worried about offenses like this but our history has made it a part of life. Maybe someday Dr. King's dream will come true.

Hmmm -- I can trade you for a Rumanian/Russian Jewess with bad eyesight who can cook a mean Lamb Biryani, (I've been mistaken for Kashmiri if that helps) as I would dearly love to be a short irish indian chick.

Let me know.

You had me at Rumanian/Russian Jewess.

How do Saturdays, Mondays and every alternate Sunday work for you?

Whereas just last evening you were saying it was one of my better (and more profitable) attributes.

Don't worry, someday I'll want to be a hot latin guy, and you'll be the first one I call.

I doubt most Black people feel this way. I just speak for myself, not anyone else. I really tried to avoid race in my daily life as much as possible.

You should probably use whatever PC terms they tell you to use in an education setting. Education environments are such weird liberal boiling pots, that freedom is often oppressed.

The whole race thing is difficult.

If someone were to call my Dad an "old Indian" I'd probably punch 'em, but my Dad calls himself that all the time.

This old Indian this, this old Indian that. He often refers to himself in the third person.

He also refers to our race as "The Red Man", even though I'm blond and my Mom was French.

I don't take offense at this.

My baby brother and I used to feel pretty uncomfortable though, when we would go on the reservation to visit my grandparents because people would stare at us because we were blonde and we were odd, whereas my other brother, looked like my Dad. They liked to touch our hair, mine was down to my waist then.

On the reservation everyone was always polite, but we (my baby brother and I) were always outsiders, whereas my other brother, they were much harder on. He got into fights, and stuff, but he was never an "outsider". If that makes any sense. Then again, he had a much more difficult time living off the reservation.

We all bleed the same color but I guess that dosen't matter.

Maybe it has more to do with the language that we speak and how we shape our environment or allow our environment to shape us as people?

Why do our physical differences matter so much to us?

Maybe It's because I'm older but I've come to the conclusion that I'd much rather be with an intelligent, funny, kind, happy, honest, hard working being. I don't care if they are fat, skinny, green, black, red, white, blue, purple, have one leg, three legs, antenna's or fur.

Since this threads not closed yet.... I'd thought I'd get my 2 linden's in.
