Population, size, who is bigger and badder? Please.

The man's family was allowed in while he was sent home. If those idiots in security had actually believed he may be a terrorist, wouldn't they have assumed his family would be involved and a threat as well? A few angry frightened security guards got away with bullying a tourist and shipping him off when he didn't cower and beg well enough to appease them. They got away with it because the US government supports and encourages racial profiling.

Due to the current administration's dealings, this ridiculous and terrifying thing called the Patriot Act and a growing rabid nationalism touted as patriotism, the US has become nothing more than the neighborhood bully. And like all bullies, lives in fear that someone bigger and badder is going to come along and squash us.

This man was not a threat, but the attitude that sending him home and seperating him from his family was somehow acceptable, is.

WTF are you talking about? Last time I checked, wives of suicide bombers were clueless their husbands were about to go boom until after they went boom. There was an article on CNN this morning that spoke about the wife of a suicide bomber and she was clueless about the terrorist streak in her husband until he assassinated the head of the Afghanistant Northern Alliance, or whatever they were called.

What is terrifying about the Patriot Act?

WHat neighbor have we bullied? Cuba?! Venezuela?!

How do you know that man wasn't a threat? Since when did you become an intelligence/police agency?

I hate to say this, but PLEASE keep the racial profiling going.

The Middle-East is the only producer of human beings willing to blow themselves and you along with them to smithereens, just for disagreeing about Allah.

Let me tell you...If Black Americans were blowing themselves up in the 60's instead of peaceful protesting I'd say keep them profiled too.

It's a rather lenghtly list, unsurprising considering the act has over 1000 sections, mostly because the specific complaints with each one can be rather esoteric. Mostly the parts that scare me can be traced back to one common theme however: A level of vaugness of wording that I feel was intentional, which gives some of the rather-innocent seeming sections broader powers that I think most people realise, were the government to choose to mis-use it.

But you want one specific section to start with?

Go read up on section 213.

Oh, FFS. This is why you don't think there's a problem, Briana -- because you don't bother to educate yourself. No, it's enough to just run your mouth randomly, vomiting patriotism uncontrollably, without worrying about having the slightest clue, even the vaguest real sense of what you're actually talking about!

Here is the Patriot Act in its entirity:

http://www.aclu.org/safefree/resources/17381res20030402.html

Here is a summary of what's in it that's so worrying, all worked out for you so that all you have to do, if you can be bothered, is absorb the fruits of someone else's research:

http://www.aclu.org/safefree/general/17326res20030403.html

This isn't just old news; it is ANCIENT news. Many people who haven't the slightest clue how bad things really are still know why the Patriot Act is a concern! By now, there is just no excuse for not knowing.

At the very least, if you can't be bothered to read up on things, do you suppose you could find it in your heart not to write about them regardless, feeling your way along in total, blindly patriotic ignorance?

You need to study your history.

Both the Japanese and the Germans had suicide troops in WWII.

I am somewhat, but believe it or not, I'm not as concerned with them as you might think, chiefly because I don't believe the system is salvageable, and therefore, I don't believe their efforts, however sincere they might be, can ultimately prove successful. However, when it comes to quick reference information on the Patriot Act, they're excellent. Fighting it is, after all, one of their little ongoing projects.

Yikes, that sure was a stab.

I asked for him to detail the parts he finds scary because as a polisci graduate I took a course on the Patriot Act, and myself find nothing terrifying about it.

You sure were quick to prattle off a flame the moment you thought you had me in your cross-hairs.

It's a big jump for you to assume I don't know what you are talking about simply because I don't find the patriot act terrifying.

I also don't find it to be esoteric.

How much power do you think the government should have? Do you think the government should be able to lock down on its citizens like China does?

Ok so you state that you've read it and it doesn't worry you. It doesn't worry you that the US government's plan to protect our freedoms involves systematically removing them. Fine.

Does this worry you at all?

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/03/24/bush_shuns_patriot_act_requirement/

From: someone
When President Bush signed the reauthorization of the USA Patriot Act, he included an addendum saying that he did not feel obliged to obey requirements that he inform Congress about how the FBI was using the act's expanded police powers.

From: someone
...But after the reporters and guests had left, the White House quietly issued a ''signing statement," an official document in which a president lays out his interpretation of a new law.

In the statement, Bush said that he did not consider himself bound to tell Congress how the Patriot Act powers were being used ...

Do you know that? If so, how?

People get turned away from the border all the time for all kinds of reasons. Living in Michigan, I've crossed over to Canada more times than I can count. Usually it's without incident but not always. One time we were turned back because we had a foreign student with us who didn't have the right paperwork. My husband was turned back once because they just didn't trust the way he and his friend looked. And they were white. Zomg racial profiling!

There's been a terrible tendency on this board of late to jump to conclusions without having enough information. We've seen it happen regarding an alt's identity and we've seen it happen with someone's account suspension. Now it's happening in this news story, where we've only heard from one side.

But go ahead and jump to conclusions and call a whole nation racist. Hope it makes you feel better.

ok, well my best guess is that if the man was suspected of terrorist links it be in all of our interests to arrest him and question him.. or hand him over to the british authorities for questioning.. not sling racist and fictional laws like "asians need special papers" at him then send him home.

plus, I did not call your country Racist. that was a directed statment. All americans I know are horrified as much as I at racist behavior.

"Asians need special papers" is how he put it. I don't know how the immigration official put it. Whatever "special papers" are needed, if that was the case, apparently his family members had them. Or maybe the immigration people questioned the validity of the passport he did have. It's not that uncommon. My mother is German and moved to the US in 1968 and became a US citizen, and she often gets extra questions at border crossings because of her accent.

Look, immigration officials can be dicks. I know this. My husband met one at a party who gloated over the fact he could turn anyone back for any reason at all. He even said that he had no obligation to let US citizens back into their own country. He seemed to get a kick out of that.

But there are many flavors of asshole. Racist is just one of them.

Yeah, my cousin, a young white Scots girl was strip searched and questioned for hours going over to stay a while with family. She had bought vodka at the duty free and was asked stupid questions like, 'but if you're Scotttish why are you drinking vodka? Scottish people all drink whisky'.

No wonder most Americans don't travel outside their country often.
