So anyway, I just had to cross the American border tonight to get back in from Canada. Took 2.5 hours. We were crawling along. The border guards were looking in the trunks of every car and spending about five minutes on each vehicle.

So it was with some trepidation that we crawled up to the guard shack, not knowing what the guard would ask.

His name was Marcu, spoke with some kind of Slavic accent. He asked us to roll down the back door window so he could have a look in and he saw ... our dog.

"Oh, a Norweigan dog. A, I think, skeeee-perky, yes?"

Well, Schipperkies are actually Belgian, but who was I to argue?

"I love dogs," he said. "Have a good night."

Not that this means anything, just wanted to share the story.

But anyhow, as we were going over the bridge, the whole thing struck me as totally absurd, anyhow. You could put your suitcase nuke in your motorboat in Ontario and motor a mile across the water to the U.S. and no one would ever catch you. Or just walk across any part of the thousands-mile-long land border with the U.S. and do the same.

They sure were being careful at the auto crossing, though.

So... why did you use it incorrectly then? You claim to know what it is, so it's unlikely that you'd accidently use it the wrong way.

Ergo, you deliberately used the wrong tense...


So what's the explaination? Did you make a mistake and can't admit it, or did you deliberately use the wrong tense for some reason known only to yourself?

Neither. I was implying an action in the unspecified future, and it is perfectly acceptable to use multiple tenses within a sentence to show that you are talking about two different periods of time.

To put it in a format you can perhaps understand:

If you are not, at some point in the future, going to explain yourself, what was your reason for digging up a thread that has been, in the past, dead.

"I'm not going to do this anymore"

"Oh.. if you're not going to do it anymore, why did you do it in the past?"
