I received an email from the folks at the SoP competition at 10:45 PDT this morning and they said that they hoped to have the contest decided today Wednesday 5 October 2005. It's almost 12 hours later now and there is no announcement on their webpage and, by the looks of it, you all haven't received a notice by email either. I have to say that I feel bad for the fellow who will receive notice that they've won a trip to NY and, by the way, the conference starts in 30 minutes. :D

On a serious note, I've heard rumors that they're looking at passing over the Port because it is University funded. Just kidding.

that's too bad. all the other SL project, though technically sophisticated and beautiful, are pale comparisons to the port in terms of the criteria for the competition. it's the only one that asks questions about the medium. the rest are beautiful reinterpretations of RL architecture but don't offer anything new.

in terms of public-ness or social mediation, i've generally found that a beautiful plaza in sl is no better than a barren or cluttered sandbox. the winning entry will hopefully be more than eyecandy. nothing wrong with an eyecandy, but we just had the train station competition last month. :)

Jauani, I think you need to look at Ulrika's quote with your super secret spy glasses. There may be a secret message in there for you.

well i assumed by rumours, what she really meant is she heard it "off the record" from competition officials.

HAHA. That was actually really fun. I'm at work and both my managers were talking to each other just a few feet away from me while I rushed to make that image :D. I was like "Need to make the pic before Jaunai figures it out.... need to hide my goofing off from managers! EEK! "

In the State of Play III online program they have a session on Architecture in Virtual Worlds from 2-3.

Note they also have the architecture contest listed during that panel. Maybe they will unviel the winner then, like the Oscars or something... Just speculation but I'm doing my best to be a scur-lock.

So I guess they have til then, or the program will have a glaring mistake in it.

I really hope someone will be live blogging the conference. Terra Nova is listed as being the official blog so maybe it will show up there.

the rest are beautiful reinterpretations of RL architecture but don't offer anything new.

I beg to differ, at least about my own submission. While I recognize that it isn't as radical as The Port, the notary build wasn't based on RL architecture, and it's elements are formed to fit the properties of movement and use of space in SL, while recognizing the emotional response of AVs as they deal with a notary.

My submission included a write-up of my rationale and some notes on the elements. I'll be happy to share it once the contest winners are announced. However, you find some of discussion of this (like why there are roofs at Nota Bene) in my interview in New World Notes.

Don't mind Jauani. His indignation about the fictitious state of the Port entry led him to accidentally insult every other entrant, some clearly unjustly. :)

I mean, calling Neualtenburg "just architecture" is truly amusing. :D

You know you can't submit entries to a contest and not accept criticism.

That's just not fair play.

I sent them another email today at 17:48 PDT asking if the results of the contest were discussed at the Architecture in Virtual Worlds session today. I'll let you know if I hear anything.

I leapt straight to the bottom and missed the change in dates from top to bottom. I guess we'll wait until Saturday.

Will anyone be there in person? If so, can they provide us with detailed information and a list of the winners after the session? (Live blogging would be preferred. ;))

Should the critics be free from criticism?

Well you're probably right. Maybe only the judges should be allowed to critique.

Anyways, I'm just making noise because

a) everybody has a link to the gallery of entrants and I don't
b) I want to go visit the Port but can't find it
c) I think ulrika has me on ignore :(
