I think they are just afraid that their investors will see the forums, and pull out. :(

they'll still have a chance of getting pregnant.

You can thank the folks who beat the same damned topics to death, day in, day out.

At some point, they were bound to get sick of the ever increasing signal to noise ratio.

Color me not surprised.

Maybe if LL listenned the first time they wouldn't have to pound thatr dead horse into hamburger. Something for you to consider.

(sniffles) I'm gonna miss you guys.

Can't SL during work, so Forums filled a lot of boredom time and kept me informed.

I've enjoyed it all - even the insane and pointless posts.

But mostly Torley and her well measured, diplomatic responses and attention to even the most astoundingly complex issues. I'm going wherever she goes, heh.

I also feel very sad for all the newbies who can't understand why they can't log on every 3 days or so.

And as far as in-game help, is Live Help going to be cancelled too?

The Linden Uberblog, which where all future communication will come from.

http://blog.secondlife.com/

Until it gets bogged down via comment spam.

then we'll never hear from them again.

ooh maybe we could get mandatory telescreen's in our SL homes and public places that pump out teh news every 6 hours and and.. we cant turn it off just kinda down a bit..

this makes me sad ; ;, but hey! Sluniverse has a nice untapped(ish) forum to use and lot of others too.. **goes to see what the bloggers make of it**

Wait a damn minute now, hold the press.... How the hell will we know when the grid will be down and up and down and up ??????

If you can log in = grid is up
If you can't log in = grid is down

...at least that's how I always know. :D

My reply in the Blog was censored out. You can read it as post 49 in this thread.

[EDIT] I will ammend that slightly. My post is 'still awaiting moderation', almost 9 hours after I made it, early in the LL Staff's work day. 32 other posts were approved in a 6 hour period after mine, but apparently my post requires some sort of special approval?" [/EDIT]

It should have told us all something when forum moderation became the issue of importance that it did.

In civil discourse, it is the exception, not the rule, when all words and all movement need be monitored and subject to correction in the name of preserving fundamental manners. We have sometimes suffered misguided correction, assuredly. But we brought it upon ourselves that pressing and encompassing need for it arose at all.

In a workplace, at school, in a public restaurant, we need not generally require monitors to listen to our every word, and stand vigil to quiet us when we become too rowdy. We require these things in bars, where it is safely assumed basic lessons in civility from childhood might go astray. Elsewhere, we are simply terminated, expelled, or asked to leave the premises when we act drunkenly.

A loud neighborhood bar is being closed in this. Not the Senate.

Bull. Most usenet groups got along just fine without moderation. The only people who were upset here were the extremely thin skinned who couldn't accept that people might *gasp* have an opinion that differers from their own.

Freedom is about people having different ideas of how to do things, and free speech is people voicing opinions that differ from everyone elses.

Of course, some people can't handle that, and consider an open and honest exchange of views too rude and offensive to bear, and are aplauding the closure of the forums so that their delicate sensabilities don't have to be troubled by the even the *thought* that some people might be disagreeing in an untranquil manner somewhere.

*These* are the people who are happy to see the forums go.

An interesting collection of inductive leaps which claim, in the context of my post, that civility is the equivilent of finding a differing opinion inherently rude and offensive.

For as much as I may disagree with the content, I must say that if most discourse in these forums were framed even remotely as you have done above, I would be among those protesting the closings today.

SC is full of trolls and no-bit accounts that think "cum bubble" is the pinnacle of wit.
SLU is a bit clunky, and no one seems to use it (even though snapzilla is used a hojillion times a day).

I'm tempted to copy and paste your posts on SC, Lordfly. But anyone can just go look them up.

I used to post there, but come on, you know who I'm talking about.

Prok, Fic.tional, mulch, and notta.linden pretty much run the show.

No they don't. You're just naming the people you disagreed with while you were posting there.

Hard to believe that LL is getting embarrassed by the official forums. I mean, surely numerous posts pointing out rampant pedophilia, rape roleplay, and illicit gambling in SL couldn't have them EMBARRASSED.

Just heard the news. Personally, I think this is a good thing. These forums have been in chaos since I can remember and that is because they are the most relaxed forums I've ever seen.

Since LL aren't qualified to babysit they did the next best thing. I don't really see why so many are upset. It's not like someone won't provide a new forum for SL. It is supposed to be resident creation right?

Maybe now you all will play more or better yet get a life lol, i joke i joke! :p

Better it get aired here, then have it suddenly come out in the mainstream media as a surprise.

Exactly. What's worse, reading about it or being caught off guard in SL, up close and personal?

But the virtual world sucks for having conversations.

Given the state of the forums, so do they.

No, I mostly disagreed with you and prokmonster. But neither of you have any sway over there, so you didn't get included in the list.

I'm pretty sure real-life people use online forums all the time to organize real-life events; in fact, I bet lots of real-life folks are really grateful for such a convenient and easily-accessible means of organizing real-life stuff!

And it's just as valid and useful and convenient to organize things in SL via forums.

Just look at MySpace, some time ago, it was used as a medium to organise some sort of protest somewhere... I don't remember more of it, but the authorities were looking into it anyways. (I know, very explicit information...ehem...and hoping to get my postcount up before it's too late...)

My point being, there are examples of online sites that are being used for organising RL events. Oh, oh...and what would happen to SL meet-ups in RL now??

Torley's voice is conspicuously absent for someone practically born of the forums... I wonder how she feels about this ?
