I am gonna miss the forums, yes - but I will not miss the rush of Wednesday monkeys.

This, too, shall pass.

My only hope is those who spend more time on the SL forums than SL itself may, in fact, be forced to use the virtual world the forums are about.

Lately my SL experience is severely hampered by frequent crashes, for which I've done everything support@lindenlabs.com suggests plus a few other things. Nothing is working! I crash when I open a map, when I do an inventory search, when I teleport. LL needs to fix the goddamn platform if they expect people to log in more. Hence, I spend a lot of time in Forums, keeping up with friends and news and new products.

After months of FU from the residents to LL on the forums. Good for them, can't say that I blame them. I would have done it MUCH sooner.

Yes, that is the best way to run a business, tell your customers to shut up, you are tired of their complianing about your product. I just love it when I purchase something and can't even get someone on the phone or even find a way to contact them, I'm happy LL has decided to go that route and has started by cutting off the one place people could criticise them openly. Two thumbs up.

Why close the content creation forums, the most productive forums here?

It's bullshit and a bad sign.

I am not a troll and I frequent the SC forums. I personally find them rather amusing. And without that resmoddy aftertaste I get from reading the SL forums. ;)

And here is where I totally agree with you. Closing these forums down is ridiculous. But as for General - it's hard to get a rational message to LL when trying to shout above a million screaming monkeys.

Have to thank LL for this last, absolutely senseless decision. Makes me wonder on the complete shortsightedness shown by them on the last few months…
Hope this will be reconsidered and that excuses to the community (for this and for many other less than smart initiatives) will be issued. No actually i don’t hold my hopes too high to see something finally logical on their part. But i always grant everyone a chance to prove me wrong.

You are exactly right on this, and I think that it's cutting down on the potential for comunity action is exactly what LL is looking for at this point.

Like the thing with SLStats.com, if I hadn't read about it on the forums, I likely wouldn't have known about it, and likely no on would have been able to organize to stop it.

The thing is, from a managment point of view, things like this are an added complication. They don't *want* to hear about issues like this, they don't *want* people organizing, they don't wnat to have to deal with it, or get called on it if they don't deal with it.

Silencing the Forums keeps people from bringing up these issues and hides user discontent, allowing them to get on with the business of raising user numbers in order to make LL look like a good investment for an IPO. And *that* is what LL is all about these days.

Prior to the announcement that the forums are being closed, I would have dismissed a post like this as overreacting.

Now I'm not too sure.

Forums are an odd thing, logic and reason go out the window, feelings get hurt and bizzare accusations fly. But despite that, it does breed a sense of community and dialogue, and people like them.

This is the first decision that makes me question if I will continue with Second Life. I'm far from cancelling mind you, but I'll continue to wait and see where things go. I can live without the forums, but the apparent reasoning behind shutting them down is what I find troubling.

There is no reason why a blog cannot exist alongside the forums. The forums have become in their words "not scalable" because SL has grown, the forums are now a community in its own right.

For now, I'll wait and see what else happens.

This is the dumbest idea I've seen lately.

I'm extremely disappointed in LL.

OK....what the hell did I miss while I was at lunch?!? All talking in the forums should cease to exist while I'm away from my computer! Now I'm lost. :(

It's true, I prefer forums to trying to type in a little box while fighting godawful lag.

There are a lot of funny, intelligent people here, even though some would have you believe everyone posting is a worthless troll. (which makes them trolls of trolls, I suppose) Hey, that rhymes!

Click on Control Panel (upper right side of the forums, beneath the logo), then over on the left hand side there is a section called Your Profile with various options.

I posted this to the blog, it sums up my thoughts on the matter.

From: someone

This will not end well.

No company in the history of the online gaming industry has ever recieved a positive net benefit from shutting out its paying customers from an official means of discussion and feedback. Several companies have tried this and they’ve ended up reopening forums again within 3 - 6 months.

Sure there are resident run websites that host forums…but do you think they can handle the traffic? I doubt it…a shutdown of the Linden official forums will lead to the subsequent shutdown of community hosted forums as well.

By removing the Linden official forums you deny your customers the right to collaborate and present their unified concerns to you. Without them…every issue we may have can be written off as a singular or individual issue because you cannot be shown a joint concern of the community

Of course…feature voting could do that…but you can’t exactly get many votes for a new feature if you’re unable to present your case to the community so they can decide to support your feature vote.

I urge you, and the rest of Linden Labs to reconsider this course of action. All the drama aside..the forums are where all the people that might never meet each other on the grid have the ability to share concerns and discuss issues.

Shutting down, or ignoring your communities concerns by denying them the ability to talk back to you en masse is effectively putting us all in the position of not having any input at all in what is “Our World, Our Imaginations” and basically affords the community no respect at all for its feelings and concerns.
