The plus side to this is now you can bash somebody and not worry about getting banned from game. That is the only advantage I see of them getting rid of the forums.

I think what is the real reason for the closng is the fact LL doesnt want to have to babysit people on their forums. (I am one of those people) And its to time consuming to constatly review and disiplline people that are suppose to be adults!

Oh, and another nice "fuck you" to everyone who uses the commercial section of the forums.

I am not glad to see them go either, I spend a lot of time on here, albeit mostly lurking these days, but it was really to be expected. I find myself lurking more and more as time goes on, precisely because of the many redundant loops that have been going for years now.

If Janie and Johnny can never agree to at least attempt to play nicely, Mom and Dad will eventually take the hobby horse and toss it in the rubbish bin.

I am not a troll and I frequent the SC forums. I personally find them rather amusing. And without that resmoddy aftertaste I get from reading the SL forums.

There will be other ways and other forums. There always are. It just removes the headache from Linden Labs of having to police the forums, and hands it to the people who take them for granted.

Actually, I do spend a lot of time in-world, just with alts rather than with my main account. Mostly I stay on my own land and build, or socilize with a few close friends, so I prefer the privacy that a more limited friends list on an alt gives me.



I think that this is exactly *why* they want to eliminate the forums. So that they *don't* have to deal with resident feedback on things like changes to the user interface, increased griefing from unverified accounts, things like the 3rd party data collection thread that just took place, complaints about IP theft in game, etc.

Out of sight, out of mind, and it eliminates the ability of people to get together and make their concerns known in an organized fashion, which means that they can ignore it, and moreover, means that they don't have to worry about their investors happening across any signs of user discontent in the forums.

The Pointy Haired Bosses are in firm control at Linden Labs these days.

I think this is a *terrible* idea, myself. Tanamount to Linden Labs placing their collective fingers in their ears and shouting “La la la, I can’t hear you!” like a little brat, rather than LISTENING to the concerns of the people who make Second Life a living, thriving community.

What you’re doing is blinding and deafening yourself and the community.

I’ll admit, there’s a lot of worthless crud in the forums. But there is a lot of damned valuable community action, as well. Take the fiasco with SLStats.com, as a prime example. A new ’service’ threatened the privacy of users throughout Second Life, making a public record of who met with whom, and claiming that certain individuals ‘encountered’ others on no more basis of fact than linear proximity at the time of a surrepticious and unauthorized scan. Concerned individuals took it to the forums, voiced their concerns, pro and con, and got the unauthorized public posting of private information throttled down to a private, opt-in only service that only lists people who agreed to be monitored, and is only accessible by subscribers to the service.

In your deaf, blind and dumb vision of the new forums, where would the community have been able to turn for action? Most would have remained ignorant of the threat to their privacy. The complaints issued via the ‘official Linden channels’ STILL have not been answered! If it had been left up to only the few avenues you plan to allow to remain, that breech of privacy in SL would still be rampant.
