I am not a troll and I frequent the SC forums. I personally find them rather amusing. And without that resmoddy aftertaste I get from reading the SL forums. ;)

I used to post there, but come on, you know who I'm talking about.

Prok, Fic.tional, mulch, and notta.linden pretty much run the show.

Well, we'll have a reason to dilute them now.

Wow.

I agree with Joy - there are a lot of awesome folks in the forums that I may never have crossed paths with in-world, especially since 95% of my game time is spent in one location. Drama filled or no, it still kinda bums me out that this method of dialog is going away.

We'll see how it goes, I guess. Maybe it'll finally break my sl-forums @ work addiction.

Very sad. The forum is a great place to learn about and meet the best people. These meetings are not random. True there are all these trolls but we also get these breezes of lemony-fresh air (specificically citing Tatiana).

Lots of very good discussions were happening here and these discussions can help LL with future features they can put into SL.

It's through the forums that I learned a lot about the little ins-and-outs of SL.

In-game comms won't be able to replace forums. We live around the world so we will still need aynchronous communication that can reach LL directly.

What LL structure will replace the forums? The blog entry doesn't say enough.

Wow, way to go LL. A great big FU to the community.

After months of FU from the residents to LL on the forums. Good for them, can't say that I blame them. I would have done it MUCH sooner.

I think this is a *terrible* idea, myself. Tanamount to Linden Labs placing their collective fingers in their ears and shouting “La la la, I can’t hear you!” like a little brat, rather than LISTENING to the concerns of the people who make Second Life a living, thriving community.

What you’re doing is blinding and deafening yourself and the community.

I’ll admit, there’s a lot of worthless crud in the forums. But there is a lot of damned valuable community action, as well. Take the fiasco with SLStats.com, as a prime example. A new ’service’ threatened the privacy of users throughout Second Life, making a public record of who met with whom, and claiming that certain individuals ‘encountered’ others on no more basis of fact than linear proximity at the time of a surrepticious and unauthorized scan. Concerned individuals took it to the forums, voiced their concerns, pro and con, and got the unauthorized public posting of private information throttled down to a private, opt-in only service that only lists people who agreed to be monitored, and is only accessible by subscribers to the service.

In your deaf, blind and dumb vision of the new forums, where would the community have been able to turn for action? Most would have remained ignorant of the threat to their privacy. The complaints issued via the ‘official Linden channels’ STILL have not been answered! If it had been left up to only the few avenues you plan to allow to remain, that breech of privacy in SL would still be rampant.

You are exactly right on this, and I think that it's cutting down on the potential for comunity action is exactly what LL is looking for at this point.

Like the thing with SLStats.com, if I hadn't read about it on the forums, I likely wouldn't have known about it, and likely no on would have been able to organize to stop it.

The thing is, from a managment point of view, things like this are an added complication. They don't *want* to hear about issues like this, they don't *want* people organizing, they don't wnat to have to deal with it, or get called on it if they don't deal with it.

Silencing the Forums keeps people from bringing up these issues and hides user discontent, allowing them to get on with the business of raising user numbers in order to make LL look like a good investment for an IPO. And *that* is what LL is all about these days.

This, too, shall pass.

My only hope is those who spend more time on the SL forums than SL itself may, in fact, be forced to use the virtual world the forums are about.

Looks like I'll have to go back to Fark during my work hours then. :( Although it is entertaining, it just doesn't have that SL touch!

I see this as an opportunity for many residents to create new communities by opening their own forums.

I think that's the idea here.

Well, I'm usually pretty forgiving on LL but I have to say it.

This has got to be the most bone headed decision I've seen from Linden Labs so far.

In about a month we’ll be shutting down the following forums: “Bulletin Board”, “General Topics”, “The Sandbox”, “Land and Economy” and “In-world Political Science”. We’ll leave them as ‘read only’ so they can be searched for history.

In subsequent months we’ll continue to close Linden forums
