No - it's a logical fallacy.

Seriously. Just ban them. No, I mean it. Ban Ban Ban. No No No. Bye Bye Bye!

Prude,

Your lack of imagination is not needed in SL. Your lack of tolerance is also not needed.
Quite frankly, GO AWAY.

sincerely,

Notta Prude.

Funny thing...you seem to have a lack of tolerance of these prudes who you accuse of having a lack of tolerance. So wouldnt that make you a prude.

Serious question...what is a prude?

But you are telling me to lower my standards to yours by tolerating them.

I have to accept your wishes, but you don't accept mine.

I thought in your first posting you were being satirical.

Such breathtaking arrogance deserves an award.

It never ceases to amaze me how these threads take off like fire and end up being pages upon pages of people trying to look right to themselves or the board at large. IF now this is IF everyone were truly open-minded that claimed they are I dont think we would have threads like this. Open-mindedness evidently cuts off when it comes to accepting those who do not see things the way they do. BOTH sides of this are close minded. I see accusations of people complaining about having others' beliefs shoved down their throat here on the forums and I kinda laugh. I see so many posts about anti-bush, anti-jesus camp, etc etc. Hell, it is obvious what they are geared for..to incite a response. For what?
Nobody is gonna change anyone else's mind in all this. But if you want to feel good about how great you think you are because of your belief system whatever it is then keep fueling this crap. At the end of the day it doesnt change a thing though.
Seriously.. this is as old as the rest of the stuff that keeps popping up on the board over and over and over and over and over again.
Can anyone honestly say they have actually changed a major opinion or belief they have based on a thread like this?
I dont say this to start a fight, cause a debate or anything of the like. This is just a post to say tolerance is only complete when you can tolerate the intolerant. Intolerance in itself is already closed so there is no expectation there but that closed mindedness. At least if you are gonna say you are tolerant and open-minded then consider that includes all belief systems no matter how far away they are from your's.

You know, my reaction to those who don't get it has changed over the course of this thread.

There are now giggles where there were once clenched teeth and rolled eyes.

It's just damned funny how some folks apparently don't even try to look beyond the ends of their own noses, and mindlessly carry on with their agendas.

Well played Kendra.

Good point. I don't know if there is a thread that has ever changed my opinion on something. I will have to ponder that one.

No - it's a logical fallacy.

I think that was Kendra's point - some people have just missed the blunt cynicism in her satircal thread topic. :)

I've definitely had my opinions changed by forum discussions, it's an essential part of any kind of communication. The evangelical overlords of the USA would call it "flip-flopping", but I prefer the term "open mind." For example, I'm known as somewhat of a champion of calling Second Life as Linden Lab does, a platform. Yet, in the past, look at a quote from me:

http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2004/02/mood_indigo_par.html

From: Me in Early 2004
"Yeah, but there haven't been group conflicts yet," says Peregrine, crossing his fingers. "I keep reminding people IT'S STILL ONLY A GAME!"

(Wow, my AV was ugly back then!)

Granted, back then SL had a high score list, a leader board showing people who were tops in ratings, number of calling cards owned, and so forth. However, I've definitely changed my opinion since. I think Linden Lab has as well - things like removing the leader boards, high score list, and the introduction of people using SL for serious business and education, in addition to the core who use it for pure entertainment. Changing your views is an important thing to be able to do, as long as you're not allowing yourself to be brainwashed.

If anyone is seriously looking for a similar environment to SL, with no sex, no furries, no Goreans, that is 100% PG and only used for entertainment, where you can still create content? www.There.com

Just my thoughts

Yes it is actually.

We are all given the CHOICE, we make our choice and deal with the consequences. An equal choice, free will, a gift from God, yet for some reason people still choose to go to hell despite being given every opportunity to avoid it.

People. Strange.

*shrug*

Lewis

You ruin your credibility by judging others. You constantly try to change other by cramming your thoughts/views/opinions down anyone's throat who does not live as YOU think they should. Your job as a Christian is not to police others and remind them of their wrongdoings as you see them. That would be God's job. So you, in your judgemental, cram it in everyone's face, attitude, defy everything a Christian is called to be. Where's is your love for your neighbor? Are we not asked to turn the other cheek? Instead of spending all your time in the forums telling everyone what they are doing wrong in their SL perhaps you could spend some time being thoughtful, caring and even (brace yourself) accepting of the fact that not everyone in the world believes the same thing you do. And guess what? That's ok. We are allowed to have our own thoughts and choices. As you said so yourself in the post I quoted above. "An equal choice, free will, a gift from God" A gift that can be accepted or denied. Free will. So just because someone elses choice isn't the one you made, that doesn't make it ok for you to say they're wrong. Your place, as a Christian is to witness and pray for those you worry over their choices and where they may be spending eternity. But it's not your place to voice it to them. Again it's God's job. So maybe you could stop trying to do God's job and do your own as part of body of Christ. I am guessing that those who don't have your same beilief in God and the bible, would respect your beliefs a whole lot more if you'd step back and show some respect, kindness and even some good ole Christian love :D

Not everyone who claims to be "christian" actually reads or understands the bible, Tami, I'm afraid you're talking to one of those types in Lewis's case.

As have I about some things. Nothing major though.

Let me rephrase my question.. again this is just me wondering, not gonna be all "SEE" or anything at the end lol.

Has anyone ever changed a major belief in religion or politics based on the combative threads in the forum?

That is more what I was wondering.. does all this do anyone any good really?

It absolutely does good. My business partner was an evangelical Christian, born again, and I'm a reborn agnostic (former atheist, rebelled a bit too far from my Christian upbringing). We'd often debate the topics but always had respect for the others' beliefs. The debates, while never resolved or agreed upon, strengthened our friendship and kept our brains (and debate skills!) quite sharp.

My problem is when people get so arrogant and self-important that they act as if their belief system is the only one that could possibly be correct, rest of the world be damned (literally!). Then they take it to the next step: trying to legislate taste.

I despise when people try to legislate taste: what the United States government is currently doing with the FCC running amok, thanks to the evangelicals in the Parents Television Council, and the ridiculous regulation disparity between alcohol, cigarettes, and all pharamceuticals being legal while other natural remedies remain illegal, not to mention important Canadian pharmaceuticals. zOMG, Canada! The head of the anti-drug, "put the blacks in jail" brigade, the very evangelical conservative Rush Limbaugh, was doing 30 oxycontin a day. To quote Bill Maher: "Thirty oxycontin a day? Do you know how high that is? I sure don't, and I've been PRETTY HIGH!"

Now, some are trying to ban this or ban that within SL basted on their taste. It can't be allowed to happen, and the debate - since it's parallel - will continue.

Regards,

-Flip
