Lindens - is this *really* how you want things to be?

I suggest we hold a Forum Party in SL and dig out all the dirt about everyone we want to talk nasty about in the forums but we can't thanks to the thought police.

What do you say? I will even host the event, if there's an interest.

All you'll have to do is bring your gossip, your gripes, and the winter of your discontent. I will supply the DS&R&R.

;-)

WOW! The biggest landowner has been banned from Second Life and all of her assets have been taken from her? So much for buying land or Sims! It shows that they have no value at all. Nothing in Second Life has any real value. It is all GOMI!!!

Looks like I have been wrong all along! I have said that the important people in Second Life can do what they please.

Am so happy that I did not bring this to my firm’s attention as a place for our people to meet and conference! I am going to talk to some of my firms Otaku and see if we can make our own version of second life for official use.

I wonder what happened to her renters. Suppose they are out of luck as well as out of the money. I can’t believe missed this news. Talk about having your head where the sun does not shine!

Again, WOW!!

apparently she is back and has sorted her problems out ATM

but it still raises some very important questions and as usual, the resmod interference pretty much turned chaos into absolute chaos

Look, this isn't even Zap's fault.

Obviously, they haven't been trained sufficiently, if at all. Probably because there IS no general consensus, even among the Lindens, on what to do about the forums. And most certainly, there was no consistency in forum handling and forum discipline since long before the resmods arrived on the scene.

The resmods are US. They are ones of us who have been hand-picked by the Lindens (for whatever obscure reasons) to do the scut work and to take the flack for doing it.

And why? So the Lindens can save money. Period.

I'd previously considered the ResMod program an extraordinarily bad idea, but what you said just went CLICK in my head, Coco, though not the way you wanted.

If we're going to treat this as a serious world, then something like the ResMods are the correct way to solve the problem. The law should not be enforced by those who pass the laws (LL). It's up to us, to our own police force. Right now LL's picking the ResMods and setting some kind of rules, however badly, which is half a step to the right answer.

We don't want people campaigning for the position, because anyone who wants power is inherently a sociopath who cannot be trusted; no sane person wants power over another person. A proper way to pick the ResMods might be by lottery of everyone who's posted at least twice in the week, and then we can vote to impeach them if it doesn't work out (like, say, if I become a ResMod but only do it when I'm drunk and ornery).

It doesn't matter to us if it saves LL money or not, if it passes responsibility for the community onto the community.

To answer the concerns of the OP, LL seem so intent handing over responsinility to ResMods so they can carry on playing the 'good guy' card that don't see the depression they're causing to the whole of the forum community.

And what happens when people become fed up with the forums here? They leave and go to discuss the issues that are concerning in places where they're allowed to make those kinds of comments without fear of being moderated, having their posts altered, or their threads whisked off as soon as they're posted to the place.

The post changing was the final straw for me and when I saw that things were a lot more relaxed over at Second Citizen I and many others who had been regulars of the official forums here others moved over there to start posting.

I've been in a world that had its own resident-run police force. Believe me, that is the last thing you want.

If I understand you a "police" force where the residents have no input is better?

What would happen if a big landowner is banned? Would they be able to sell their sims or would Linden Labs just take them and pocket the profit? This is an important question since LL could profit a lot by going after the big land "owners", at least in the short term. I myself will never consider "buying" a sim due to the lack of legal protection of my assets. Am I wrong?

I am opposed to all kinds of resident government - unless it can be adequately scrutinised. As things stand, residents do have a small degree of input through the forums, and very occasionally they are listened to. But the thing that makes the difference is that residents in a position of authority have little to lose through bad behaviour. Being permanently banned might not be nice, but it is something one could live with. The Lindens know that if they behave badly, it will affect their reputation and consequently their business.

I would prefer to be governed by someone who has a lot to lose if they get it wrong.
