Do you think signatures should allow images?

What's wrong with just turning off inline images?

That lets you see text-based signatures, and doesn't show images either in the sig or in the main text. Main text images are replaced with a link you can click on to see the image.

- Jon

Ya know? :D Options exist to turn on/off pictures, signatures, avatars,... . Everything one needs to customize it exactly the way you want it. I guess the problem with options is the inability to control some else's screen.

Unfortunately, the picture option is a blanket option - you can't for example, turn off pictures only in signatures. I regularly view the classifieds forum, and like being able to see the inline images there. Again, we have had the images in signatures for less than 24 hours, it is not like this is some thing that has been there all along. I actually did like reading people's signatures, but I will turn them off altogether rather than turn off inline images, which do have a purpose. Spamming the forums with a bunch of banner ads is hardly going to make the forums more readable.

So far I have not seen any images I found to be a problem but I certainly agree it can become an eyesore quickly.

But you can, as Jon indicated, opt to present the image in a text based format allowing you to select only those images you choose to view. I value the ability to control which pictures pop up on my screen.

Looks like the polls are quite neck-to-neck at the time of this post- 52 For | 54 Against. I think it's cool that they are allowing IMG tags in signatures- gives me something to do when I'm bored at work!

My my aren't we angry? There are zero guidelines for what we are allowed to put in our signatures. Where does it say you cannot put large animated images? The point is that by allowing them, when they never have before, they are just opening up the door for a lot of abuse. Even the non-abusing images are distracting - especially in quantity once you have a thread filled with them. Raising the point and illustrating it is not being childish - hwoever, your angry bitter rant is.

I feel the same can already be said of sigs that use colors and fonts to draw attention. To me an image is no different.

This new feature, like all others, I say keep but give options!! Allow the ability to see signatures without images. Allow for images but within guidelines. We can disable smilies, why not other images?

I'm more for options than taking things away. Especially things that some don't mind at all. :)

Lindens, please re-disable this "feature". Obviously, people are going to abuse it, and it makes the forums less pleasant than they already are. It's hideous and disruptive in every single forum I've ever seen that allows this.

I now have three choices: 1) Disable signatures entirely, missing out on the useful information about users who have restraint enough to not use images. 2) Put up with giant gaudy ads (ain't gonna happen). 3) Add every user who puts an image in their signature to my ignore list.

I'd prefer not to go with #3, but that's the only choice that makes sense right now.

You prefer not to go with number 3? Is that why you didn't hesitate to spam everyone with a pic in their sig with a nasty PM about how you were putting them on ignore?

Gah! Please. At least stand up for what you believe in. Don't feign guilt that you honestly don't feel.

I've also enabled inline [IMG]codes in your signature, so now you can use images in your signature. I hope everyone will enjoy it and use it responsibly, because otherwise I will get into trouble for enabling it!

I have to agree with the opinion that the only people who are abusing it, with inconsiderate disregard for Michael's request that people use them responsibly, are the people who don't want them and are posting obnoxiously huge images to make their point. Maybe they can rephrase their objections to the more accurate "please don't enable them because I personally will abuse the pivilege."

If there was no option to turn them off I'd agree that it wouldn't be fair to those who hate them, but the opposite is true. Don't like em? Turn them off. Think of it like a tv show. Isn't it better not to watch something you don't like than to try to get it taken away from those who do?

Oh spare me, Chip, it has been here for all of a day. Notice also more than half of those responding agree. It's not like it is just some little pet peeve of mine. How did we ever manage several years in these forums without them? It's fine, I will turn off signatures altogether, as that is less inconvenient to me than turning off inline image support across the board.

Either that, or just put it back the way it was before they turned off formatting, then turned it back on and included image tags in the signatures. Problem also solved.

I'm not sure - it was some way to format your signature with HTML that would crash IE.

Knock yourself out Blaze - the difference is you can turn off text signatures and not affect other text. You cannot turn off inline images just in signatures.

You can turn off text but not signatures?

I am totally missing your logic here.

Why not just turn off signatures? That won't impact anything.

You are being purposely obtuse, as usual. You can turn off text signatures without affecting the text in posts.I didn't have any problem with signatures before. My point is that I cannot just turn off inline images in signatures without turning off inline image support altogether. If you could turn off inline images just in signatures, it would be fine. The only way to do so is to turn off signatures altogether, which I have no done, but I'm not happy about. We have gone several years without images in signatures, they were just turned on in a whim.

I'm experimenting with that, but I like most inline images, when they're actually illustrating someone's point, and I only see each image once. There is no signature image so important I need to see some big ugly banner over and over again.

Well there ya go. Problem solved. And it didn't require dictating to others what should or should not be allowed based on your individual preference.

Yeah when you start to paint it as some horrible attempt to suppress individual freedoms, it bugs me. Anyway, I just took a poll, I am not in the Hotline demanding they take it down. I'm not supressing anyone's individual preferences. The main problem is there is no ability to turn off the new banner advertising in signatures without also turning off inline image support throughout the forums. If there were, I would not have a single problem with it. As it stands, it is affecting my individual preference as well. It just bothers me that they just flipped this on for no reason, and all it does is clutter up the forums even more. Mark my words, when every post in a thread has a giant banner ad at the bottom with the same image you've seen 50 million times, it will get old very fast.

I completely agree with this statement. There is no doubt that there will be many that will abuse this eventually, if not already. Maybe a solution would be to minimize the img. size requirement to prevent this from happening.

I'm adding you to my ignore-list because of your image signature. I always like to inform people when I killfile them, so they know they're annoying people.
