Actually, that should be "spelling-checker", I believe. "Spell" as a noun refers to magic, or a dysfunctional state of mind, or a short period of time.


No, you are wrong. 'Spelling checker' (without the hyphen) is correct to describe what the thing does. But 'spellchecker' is how many of these programs describe themselves, and is a useage that is so common it must be considered acceptable. In my opinion, of course.
