From: Merlyn Bailly I don't know how many posts I've seen in these forums and on SLB in which vendors don't bother spellchecking common words.

Bad spelling in ads is simply unprofessional. If you flunked 5th-grade spelling, please get someone else to check your spelling BEFORE you post ads/notices to the forums.

From: Merlyn Bailly Bad spelling in ads is simply unprofessional. Thank you! I couldn't agree more. I find myself thinking this about RL companies as well. A real peeve of mine is seeing a brick-n-mortar store with misused apostrophes. (Toy's for sale, etc.)

From: Merlyn Bailly WTF does that mean? Is that some dweeb slang that only some pimply-faced geek under 21 can understand? It's the very same slang "wtf" comes from... no need to feign ignorance now, bit too late to play the "internet? lol i'm a cool kid" card.

From: Merlyn Bailly So you're using "it's a game" as an excuse for blatant illiteracy?
ROFLMAO! How lame....
It's a game in which people set up businesses and expect people to deal with them AS IF they are real professionals. THEREFORE, YOU'D THINK A PROFESSIONAL WOULD BE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO SPELL A WORD THEY LEARNED IN 5th GRADE.
You want someone to deal with you as a "professional" -- ACT LIKE ONE. WOW! you are really bitter. Whats the matter, mommy didnt give enough attention? I think you are forgetting the point - THIS IS A GAME. get a life! Oooh and have a nice day P.S. - I spell what - wot, Someone - sumone, and I love the spell the - teh. I think you should start a thread about it. Mebbe you can call me a dumb bitch because of it

Thank you. You know, you could vent that spleen more efficiently by going to Rausch and blowing some people up. *innocent smile*

This has to be the BEST definition of pwned that I have ever seen! I mean... omgwtf? I SO love these "comedy gold" threads. And the best part is when the pwned poster still keeps trying to argue that he has been right all this time. Excellent

50 or 100 or more Linden per hour?

wow.... I can't belive that spelling is such a hot topic in SL! *starts a group against bad spelling*
I think all people who spell things wrong should be shot on sight or be banned to the noobie area till they read the dictionary 5 times. (ops, did I spell noobie right?) o_O

I can't stand things that break my immersion ... and I can't stand badly written advertisements. You're trying to SELL so it really should be the best thing you can manage to create! OR what does it say about your goods and services? I admit, my RL job is intruding here and that I am perhaps been just a teensy bit retentive EDIT - WTF? been? slap my hands!

haha looks like they got forced to take the bs down. Perosnally wether they advertise smoking in r/l or in sl people are gunna do it or not gunna do it it comes down to choice. People end up smoking because they think it looks cool not because it was advertised. Its a bunch of BS composed of people that wanna be able to sue cigarette companies after they get sick from smoking when they pretty much know wtf its gunna do to them. You wouldnt suck on the tail pipe of your car so why would you smoke a cigarette in real life.
I'd just like to point to you people that attack people's spelling or use of words. You need to grow up. Not everyone that plays SL is from the states or an english speaking country. Get over yourselves. Most of you spell bad alot of the time or use wrong words so be quiet please. Its a legitament argument dont bring childish things into it!

It seems to me that the Original Poster (OP) was expressing an opinion, albeit in a rather bilious manner.
I am somewhat surprised that the use of "you" instead of "one" in the third paragraph went without comment, nor the use of unidentified acronyms within the body of the text.
That being said, and acknowledging the widely varied backgrounds of Second Life residents, I feel better when what I post is well-written. The effort I expend is for my own pleasure, however, I suspect that for those that are learning or practicing their skills with English, the more of us that present a better "flavor" if you will of the language, the more helpful it will be to those folks.
Acronyms, slang and "l337 sp34k" are useful tools for humor, emphasis and provide quick communication when the audience is receptive to these formats. However, when writing for the general public one might consider providing the most broadly understood version of the message, thereby working to ensure that more of those that are exposed to it are able to benefit from the information displayed. There are times though when the desire is to whittle down the larger audience to a target demographic, and the use of jargon can be quite effective to that end.
The author must decide who is the intended audience? What will reach them effectively and in the most appealing manner? How can the text provided further enhance the perception of the product? Once those areas of concern are addressed, the rest is elementary.
Should we not all help each other improve our 1st and 2nd lives? Would that not be a happier option than hacking away at each other? To quote Rodney King "Can't we all just get along?”
Please forgive any grammatical errors; I gave it my best effort!

As someone who speaks British English not American English, I wonder if the whole of this is not some surreal thread.
People make mistakes, people don't all share a common language and most people didn't read English at Cambridge University.
Does the OP expect the same slang to be used across the globe, the same spelling and the same grammatical structure.
I have nothing but the highest regard for anyone who does not speak English (of any hue), as their first language to attempt any English, not contempt.
I assume 5th grade is an early school leaving age for Americans, but I wouldn't know, so should I be upset by the use of slang/local terms? No, I don't think so, I think I will learn to accept that Americans speak and write a different version of English to mine, with spelling, grammar and words being used in a different manner.
If we were all perfect, never made errors, spoke and wrote perfect British English and all believed in the same things, I for one would be bored out of my head.

From: Siggy Romulus Something obvious yes.. but in the OP's words:
"Bad spelling in ads is simply unprofessional. If you flunked 5th-grade spelling, please get someone else to check your spelling BEFORE you post ads/notices to the forums.
Thank you."
If they want to be Mr Spelling Nazi and imply folks are stupid - I'll tell it how it is, I have bigger problems working out if all the calculations I did to get product 'x' finished are correct - wondering how many 'e's I used or if I did your or you're isn't really top of my priorities sometimes.. and if that makes me stupid then maybe the OP would be better off using thier superior intellect to make their own shit.
Maybe I should make my own thread:
Condesending Psuedointellectuals - Go Fuck Yourselves The way I look at it is, if a person doesn't bother to spell check their ad then that indicates a slapdash approach, which might well be reflected in the product itself.
