From: Cheyenne Marquez When combining all of these mediums saying over and over again that the majority of the population does not want voice one can only come to the conclusion that these pro-voice proponents are simply trolling for no other reason than to annoy. Based on your last post, the fact that you still ignore the fact that what you claim to be a majority may not actually be coupled with the inflammatory nature of most of your responses I believe you're the troll here. I can't believe how passionately some of you cling to this "cameras will steal our soul" mentality. It is pretty funny, though...

From: Kitty Barnett These threads aren't getting out of hand because of the topic, it's just one person trolling most of them and attacking and mocking the participants for their differing opinions.
Yes, I'm quite surprised at the attacks people have been making here, too. I don't know why people can't be satisfied with the idea that different people have different preferences.

From: SqueezeOne Pow Sorry I stepped out for lunch so I'll have to play catchup...
No. It's not that they aren't worthy of consideration. It's that they're speculations posed as fact and are thus giving people a pre-conceived notion of how things will come to pass potentially CAUSING the discrimination prophecies to happen.
I have heard no proof to the contrary that there will be sweeping discrimination against non-voicers. There is always going to be a bad apple in the bunch and there will always be confrontations and whatnot, but that can't be blamed on v-chat. It can be blamed on the people that perpetrate it. It has been stated by you and others in various forms throughout this and other threads, that those opinions were not worthy of consideration and/or were openly dismissed outright as baseless. I can paste in the quotes, but why, hun? I made it clear that voice itself wasn't my problem, and that the possible lack of compassion from the voice community at large was. It is why I asked you how willing said community would be to help ease the transition. From: SqueezeOne Pow I'd like to see an example of that! Do you refute that a duck is a duck even after it quacks? I bet you do. See, you posted in the example. Now you can't grasp the main idea of it? How the hell do you post in a quote for crying out loud, and then try to act like you never saw it? From: SqueezeOne Pow I never said that at all. I said that for every negative situation that occurs related to voice I can pose a positive situation that occurred because of v-chat. Yes, that was after 6-8 pages of something entirely different though wasn't it? Matter of fact, you just said that recently. Which would mean 8 pages of scoffing, 2 pages of backpedaling and spinning, half a page of something approaching tolerance, and a page of "why is everybody always picking on me". From: SqueezeOne Pow See above for indication of your inaccurate statements. I have seen above. From what I have seen, you're a regular DJ. If you spin any harder you're gonna catch fire.

It is why I asked you how willing said community would be to help ease the transition. You're broadly assuming a lack of compassion when that hasn't been been the case. Come hang out with my friends in voice and see what happens. They are very accomidating to someone as long as they aren't rude. From: Kascha Matova Do you refute that a duck is a duck even after it quacks? I bet you do. See, you posted in the example. Now you can't grasp the main idea of it? All your duck metaphors are great, but you have yet to give any actual information in response. From: Kascha Matova

That is the new quote on my profile. At least I got something usefull out of all this!

From: SqueezeOne Pow hehe...you don't know her very well, do you? Her blunt manner is in no way compensating for anything. She just calls it like she sees it without being concerned about other peoples' feelings. That's why I love her! Or is it because she agrees with you? You don't love me, and I also call it like I see it. From: SqueezeOne Pow There are plenty of people out there that know big words but barely know how to use them. They usually end up resorting to insults and personal barbs when their cover is blown. I agree completely. And fair is fair. Now if you are in fact referring to me, kindly paste examples of "big-words" that I've used out of context, implying that I do not understand their meanings. In contrast, I can cut and paste definitions of clinical conditions all day as long as I don't have to consider their relevance to referenced behavior, now can't I? Let's see if I can sum you up with 'Ye good ole cut and paste' : Dementia # Memory losses. Memory loss is usually the first symptom noticed. It may begin with misplacing valuables such as a wallet or car keys, then progress to forgetting appointments, where the car was left, and the route home, for instance. More profound losses follow, such as forgetting the names and faces of family members. # Impaired abstraction and planning. The person with dementia may lose the ability to perform familiar tasks, to plan activities, and to draw simple conclusions from facts. # Language and comprehension disturbances. The person may be unable to understand instructions, or follow the logic of moderately complex sentences. Later, he or she may not understand his or her own sentences, and have difficulty forming thoughts into words. # Poor judgment. The person may not recognize the consequences of his or her actions or be able to evaluate the appropriateness of behavior. Behavior may become ribald, overly-friendly, or aggressive. Personal hygiene may be ignored. Wait...guess it's harder than it looks. I can find examples of at least three of those within your last page of posts.

Bottom line is that voice in SL is a cack idea for those who use SL but a good selling point for those who don't. Wooo we have voice, once they get here and use it they'll go back to Skype but SL need to offer it.

I'm not referring to you at all...and I'm pretty sure she wasn't either. We all know there are plenty of people out there that feign intelligence to have a certain image of themselves. What Siouxsie was talking about is how much easier it is to see through that when you can hear the person speak as opposed to only reading text. On a side note, I've met a lot of people that spend the majority of their social lives on the internet and know certain unique words but go for so long without actually having to pronounce them. There was this one guy I met that had this issue. He was smart, but he obviously never had to say a certain word (I forget what it was) until we talked. I felt conflicted because I wanted to correct him, but I didn't want to make him look silly because he was a good guy. I wonder how much of that we will see with v-chat?

I will put money down that I will be able to out-sing you. I also have many friends that will confirm this!

From: Siouxsiesioux Banshee Kicking and screaming will only make you look like more of a psychotic mental case. Please. Sell your computer and go outside.
And squeeze, it is unfortunate that debate typically = arguments and bashing. There are few people I know who can actually debate -- and sadly I know only 2 in SL.
Fact of the matter is, there is a huge number of folks who are mental cases and escape to SL to "be somebody!". That has been the trend since the early chat room days in the Nineties. I believe the term is "troll". It is unfortunate that its hard to find people who are mentally balanced and able to have a conversation with someone. Though, I guess that's my big PRO of voice chat. People can hide behind their text and BS people that they're female, smart, articulate, and not a complete wack-job; whereas, with voice it's easier weed through it -- almost as easy as it is on the forums. If you dont like me arguing with Squeeze you can just say that instead of providing this chaotic jumble of nonsense.

So .. basically, people who might be stronger when it comes to the written word, but dont have comprable verbal skills are only feigning intelligence? Or it means something else? What about those who lack impressive verbal and written communications skills? They cant even manage to feign intelligence? Even if perhaps they are brilliant in other areas? Intelligence isnt as simple as the ability to speak, nor to write.

Actually, it's worth noting that one can feign stupidity but not intelligence. A clever person can RP a stupid person, but the reverse is not possible with any conviction.

13 pages deep, I'll post my 2 cents on voice. If I enable it at all, it would be to listen in, not to contribute. There's simply no valid reason or excuse someone can give me as for a need to talk on it. In a way, I like that some people try pressuring women into using it for gender verification. That right there tells me all I need to know about what they're after. See ya' lol Saves me from having to make polite small talk

When I use "voice" in WoW, it's in the context of a guild of friends, and we can talk with one another regardless of where our avatars are in the world. My understanding of voice in SL is that it is local only. Meaning only avatars near you are vocalized, friends and strangers alike. If I wished, therefore, to use voice in SL with friends without regard to being in the same sim, I would be better off using one of the existing options: teamspeak, ventrillo, skype, yahoo voice, etc...
As for real-life businesses using SL as a place to conduct meetings, I just don't see that happening as often as people believe it will happen. Not even LL uses SL for such things, and few serious companies would bother with such non-productive nonsense, not in an age of video conferencing.

From: Cheyenne Marquez The other voice related thread has been locked so please keep this thread civil if you wish this poll and debate to continue. Ironically this was the most uncivil thread of the three . I think it was closed because it ventured entirely off-topic for several pages, and never did return to the topic of voice (and probably the whole WoW aspect of it as well, there was never an actual SL related question). On-topic... uhm... *thinks*... I'm so positive that I read one of the Lindens (I'd say Philip but not quite so sure about that bit) state that the future roadmap of voice might include tieing in regular telephony into SL voice which would probably cause a more decisive shift towards voice, but I can't seem to find where I read that anymore now . *imagines wave after wave of newbies rushing over to camp on SL while meanwhile spending their 'hard-earned' L$ on phone calls, establishing SL as the exciting new platform of free telephone calls *

Rarely
06-23-2007 15:08
I voted rarely.....only because there's a slight chance I might be curious at some point, and I'd be okay with hearing voices of some of the good friends I've made in SL. But, on the whole, it seems to me it would be way too time consuming and tedious to have to speak and listen to others......part of the atttraction of SL is multi-tasking....socializing in groups.....having a good voice conversation requires focus and 100% attention to 1 person. Nothing wrong with that if you're sitting face to face, but I just don't see it enhancing the SL experience for me. I can type faster, and when language is an issue, at least we are not struggling with accents while reading text. If I want to hear a voice and be heard, I'll make a phone call......and even at that...I'm not much of a phone person. *shrug*

I -will- be using voice in certain situations, especially when it allows me to keep my skills sharp in a language I'm not fluent in, but enjoy learning.
Said language also has a characterset that is entirely different to my native tongue's keyboard, making it a downright pain-in-the-ass to try conversing in text
I'm not using any IMEs, so text must:
- be input from my keyboard, into a word processor made for the language, - copied and pasted back into SL.
By the time I've done all that, as well as looking for any special characters that convey my real meaning, the native speakers have moved from whatever subject they've been on and gone in a completely different direction, making my contribution worthless. It's also worth pointing out that in most cases, in order to read what is being said, I'd have to be fully-literate in the language I'm trying to immerse myself in. This, for adults, requires knowledge of about 2,000 characters total.
In short, yes, voice chat will have an ENORMOUS impact on the 'I want to learn a new language' crowd.
After that, as I don't really care (to a point) how much people know about me (my 'idealized appearance', as my av is, isn't truly THAT different from my meat form), I will be freely voicing away wherever the ability presents itself. I'm already quietly passing judgement on who's what gender by the genders, appearance and actions they choose here, and surprise, surprise... I've been right more often than wrong.
So you doom-and-gloomers, it's happening already, and this is just another tool to be taken advantage of. Suck it up and deal with it.

Any version of windows that can run SL also has a free IME available for the cost of the download bandwidth. And all versions of Mac have had IMEs since forever.

From: Brenda Connolly Other than your incredibly smug and arrogant comment on passing judgement on people, you raised a good example of why you will use the feature. We have to respect everyones individual reason for why they think voice will be useful. Unfortunately, I don't buy this ... From: Tiberious Neruda In short, yes, voice chat will have an ENORMOUS impact on the 'I want to learn a new language' crowd. I seriously doubt that anyone will join, or use, SL to learn a foreign language. If one is truly interested in learning a foreign language, the traditional method of signing up for a course is not only much easier, but much more interactive and effective as well. In addition, there are so many other alternatives by which to accomplish learning another language on the web, and on tape/disk, if one were truly interested. It is so much easier and interactive to learn a foreign language by using so many of the other available alternatives. That is not to say that some may not take a jab at learning a few words or phrases. But to state that this will have an ENORMOUS (capital letters?) impact on learning a language is a bit of a stretch and its simply the new "Jump-on-the-bandwagon, flavor-of-the-month" excuse given by pro-voicers to somehow justify their point of view. Again, voice in SL and/or on the web is nothing new. If you are truly interested in learning a foreign language by using voice, then by all means download Skype, Ventrilo, or Teamspeak and have at it.
