From: Michael Bigwig No I'm not Colette--I've read it all. I think you're missing MY points. I dont think I should have to reapeat what people have said in dozens of threads .. but ill try to explain some of what you are missing. From: Michael Bigwig It blows my mind how many people chose to never use it. There are several reason I’ve read and gathered such as: language barriers, role-play or avatar gender confusion, shyness, liars, ignorance.
Adding to your list.. -those who have handicaps that prevent them from using it. -those who have home situations where voicing is impractical at best. -those who do not want the level of intrusion into their lives that voice represents. -those who are extremely introverted. -those who are better with text than with speech -those who do not like their voice -those who dont want to noise of other people's voices. -those who have an arraingement with their Spouse to only go so far. -those who resent how all those above will be treated. -those who simply dont want to use it. Im sure Ive missed quite a few reasons people have. Everyones entiltled to make up their own mind based on their own situation. Voice isnt new - just this implimentation of voice is new. It will neither be as great as the biggest proponents think, nor will it be as horrible as the biggest detractors think.

From: Michael Bigwig The technology is amazing, if you don’t want to make Second Life that much more immersive…then fine, but let me tell you…”it’s the way of the future.” I think you have your terms mixed up just a little. Voice actually breaks immersion.

And where does it show I don't understand these things? For one, I think the majority of them are obvious, and the other reasons I listed myself. I also think a few of those reasons you've listed are total ballocks...I"m not being a troll I promise...I just think people are making it WAY to complicated...if you don't want to use voice or you don't want to hear someone...you don't have to. And if people discriminate or segregate because of voice preference...then you shouldn't be hanging out there anyway... I just want you to know...I love you all!

There are several reason I’ve read and gathered such as: language barriers, role-play or avatar gender confusion, shyness, liars, ignorance. I'll add (and Collette may have covered some of these): person cannot speak, person enjoys quiet, person wants to talk on phone while playing, person does not want to disturb others in house, person wants to keep private what they are doing from other people in the house, person does not want cursing/shouts from voicegriefers heard by children in the house, it's more tiring to talk, the AV may be shared by more than one person (group-home situation) so different voices from the same AV would be disturbing, some women have deep voices, some men have high voices, some people have underage voices, person may want to listen to music not available in SL, you can't do instant translations like with a Babel fish device, some people want a written record of a conversation, some people feel they are losing control of the world they've meticulously created, some people resent the fact that this was forced down the general population's throats without a real need or want expressed by said general population, it's an added expense to an already pricey experience, talking and trying to do multiple IMs will be maddening, headphones are uncomfortable and they will smoosh down my groovy retro 'fro.

Apparently you missed most of my points. Your statement of "...nor will it be as horrible as the biggest detractors think" has pretty much been my whole arguement. And ironically considering all the doomsaying you've done about v-chat I'd have to say you are one of the biggest detractors on here. The majority of anti-voice opinion has been because of valid reasons such as personal preference and various hardware/logistics issues. Only you and about 4 other people have been so adamantly against it for imagined socially catastrophic reasons. A majority of posts doesn't mean you're in the majority!!

You guys are so damn dramatic. Oh come on...half of those listed are insecurities or strange quirks...for crying out loud. Shall I list all the reasons why people WOULD WANT to use voice chat? I think the majority of them would be redundant...just like the things you've listed. Let's not go overboard...I mean...saying, "I don't want to use voice chat because I have a deep voice for a woman, and I'm insecure about that..." That's just ridiculous...so those people should be taken into consideration when developing hardware and software? You guys are nuts. Headphones are uncomfortable? Wha? You guys wouldn't stand a chance in court...your reasoning is about as sturdy as a wet paper bag... It's more tiring to talk? lol. What the hey!?! What planet are you guys from? The planet of Lazy from the galaxy of Polymouth?

You should read some of the stuff I've waded through to make some of the same points!! Some people will go to great lengths to avoid facing their fears/insecurities even if it limits the rest of us! ESPECIALLY in some cases...some people want everyone to suffer with them. And people have gotten so angry about it, too! It's a good thing I don't have a car parked anywhere in SL otherwise I'd be afraid to turn it on for fear of it exploding!

Your definition of biggest detrators and my definition of biggest detractors differs. I dont consider myself one of the biggest detractors. You are confusing someone who is "vocal" on a subject for being the most on one side or other of an issue. From: SqueezeOne Pow And ironically considering all the doomsaying you've done about v-chat I'd have to say you are one of the biggest detractors on here.
I disagree. Im not the one of biggest detractors of voice chat. Im just one of your biggest detractors. I simply have problem with people who have an ostrich mentality when it comes to the drawbacks of universal voice chat. People who have ignored and continue to ignore any negatives. The possitives of voice chat are important sure - but they are less relevant since Voice chat is already coming. Like I said before this isnt a debate about whether or not to have vocie chat any longer. No one here was invited in on that debate. From: SqueezeOne Pow The majority of anti-voice opinion has been because of valid reasons such as personal preference and various hardware/logistics issues. You are simplfying the entire dialog on this issue. If this is really what you beleive is happening Id suggest taking some reading courses. From: SqueezeOne Pow A majority of posts doesn't mean you're in the majority!!
I have not been the one intersted in being in the majority - you are confusing my statements with what others have said .... again.

Ya no kidding...it seems the majority of the issue is insecurity...people figure, "well, I'm too insecure to talk...so why should everyone else have fun with this new technology." I know people will NEVER admit to that...but sadly, it's one of the reasons. I understand there are some very valid reasons why some people can't or won't talk...but those reasons are much less critical to the success of voice technology compared to the benefits it will bring.

I know people will NEVER admit to that...but sadly, it's one of the main reasons. I understand there are some very valid reasons why some people can't or won't talk...but those reasons are much less critical to the success of voice technology compared to the benefits it will bring. What some people miss - on both sides - but mainly on the pro voice side Is that voice is already coming/here So the "dramatic complaining" is not really aimed at eliminationg voicechat. It is more an attempt to get people to understand that for many voice chat is unwelcome or unneccessary. There literally was no debate one whether voice chat should come to Second Life or not. People miss that. Linden Labs decided themselves that one. So there will be no stopping technology or any of that nonsense going on.

So there will be no stopping technology or any of that nonsense going on. Debating whether voice chat should be implimented into SL is like debating whether scripting should have been added. THAT'S how important it is to the software and the development team. It's a HUGE positive...you guys are just afraid of change. VOIP is a technology that 90% of all gamers and computer geeks want...I find it hard to believe that those numbers are actually switched in Second Life...to be honest, I think the numbers here are skewed...either that or Second Life houses some of the laziest, most insecure people on the planet...

Now you're just full of sh@t. You can do better than that. Most of your posts have been about all the bad things that'll happen. Give me a break! From: Colette Meiji I disagree. Im not the one of biggest detractors of voice chat. Im just one of your biggest detractors.
So the truth comes out! This definitely explains your debate tactics. So if I started saying voice was bad would you eventually start liking it? From: Colette Meiji I simply have problem with people who have an ostrich mentality when it comes to the drawbacks of universal voice chat. People who have ignored and continue to ignore any negatives.
...what? So giving something new a chance instead of thinking of all the bad things that could possibly happen is considered an ostrich mentality? Wow. Do you just look for reasons to not like things or is there any logic going on in there?? From: Colette Meiji The possitives of voice chat are important sure - but they are less relevant since Voice chat is already coming. Like I said before this isnt a debate about whether or not to have vocie chat any longer. No one here was invited in on that debate.
I already addressed this before. Read back to understand that they don't have to ask YOU to know if a large group of people want voice. The fact that Skype use is so prominent among SL residents shows that people want voice options with SL. I'm sorry if SL doesn't ask your permission before doing things. From: Colette Meiji You are simplfying the entire dialog on this issue. If this is really what you beleive is happening Id suggest taking some reading courses.
No, I think you're just trying to be right without having any actual logic or fact. Your arguements have all been about what "will" happen...which is actually what "could possibly" happen...and based on information given in these threads EVEN BY ANTI-VOICERS it is more like what "will not" happen. From: Colette Meiji I have not been the one intersted in being in the majority - you are confusing my statements with what others have said .... again.
Then stop saying the same things other people are saying. So far the pattern of these threads have been Colette and friends: voice will hurt people's feelings and cause discrimination because non-voicers will be pressured into using it because they are afraid of social confrontation me: how do you know? why is this a reason to not have voice? why can't people just make up their own minds and not use it if they don't want? Colette: you're mean so you're wrong me: what does that have to do with anything? Colette and friends: yeah you're a jerk me: is that all you have to say? Colette and friends: voice will hurt people's feelings and cause discrimination... (repeat) Your arguements are tired.

From: SqueezeOne Pow Apparently you missed most of my points. Your statement of "...nor will it be as horrible as the biggest detractors think" has pretty much been my whole arguement. If that's the case then you've certainly been going about it the wrong way. The only point you put forth is to in one way or another discredit or mock anyone who is critical of anything (not really limited to voice, you've branched out on occassion to other topics) which is fine, but you don't ever really constructively add to any of the discussions. When you started mingling in the threads at first you accused everyone who was critical of not having tried it, ignored any claims to the contrary and still insisting that the only reason anyone disagreed was because they hadn't tried it. Meanwhile you put forth stories of how tolerant and warm-hearted every last voice encounter on the beta grid was and everyone was eager to just type to the poor voice-challenged folk who stopped by, while again ignoring the many experiences people were describing where it was clear that *some* people were using voice as a new way of being judgemental. There really aren't many true "anti-voicers", just people who feel strongly about not using it themselves, or those who feel it shouldn't have been added in the first place but certainly aren't campaigning for LL to rip it back out now that it's there, or those who highlight possible problems that will occur when voice and non-voice residents intermingle.

The numbers are skewed - this has been discussed. Mainly on the other thread. I'm not a troll. I am, however, forthcoming in my manner of speech sometimes. It's hard for me to put something thought provoking out there, and have multiple people reply as if I've said nothing. Some of what you've said also Colette comes off as a little flame-worthy...you are aware of that right? You guys are BOTH being juvenile. To a graphic designer, 3d modeler, hardcore gamer and all around computer geek...there is absolutely NO reason to question the pros and cons of voice technology. The pros FAR exceed the cons. Next thing you know, people will be saying, "I HATE voice technology...I LOVED to type all my emails out...now they ruined it with voice to text software..." There's no sense bitching about it...I find this thread to be nothing more than a support group for those that are unwilling or unable to make the switch. It's not like it will at all spoil anyone's time in SL...if you hang out all the time in places where immature griefers dwell...well then that's YOUR problem...one word: "filter." Again...I'm not a troll. I love you all. I'm just very...blunt.

From: Colette Meiji thats two posts now where you havent come up with anything the least bit original .. I really am unimpressed. Considering you are going on 5 posts of the same I just wanted you to feel comfortable. Do you have anything to add to the debate or is it just going to be low-grade barbs directed at me? I could always supply you with a firing range target that looks like me and a weapon. At least that way you wouldn't be masking your vindictive intentions under the guise of discussion of SL features and their uses. On second thought, since you don't like new technology, I'll just get you a rock to throw at the target! back to the debate... a) voice won't be as bad as it's detractors think b) it has many positive applications such as education c) griefing already happens so it's not like this will be a new phenomenon brought on by voice d) if you don't want to use it for whatever reason then disable it. A bunch of polls on here have shown that it won't be replacing typing anytime soon so you'll still be able to talk with people. e) no matter how much you don't like me doesn't mean voice will cause waves of discrimination and social anxiety for the self-concious out there. They're most likely going to feel that way in one way or another anyway.

I'm not here to role play. I am who I am, in SL as in RL.
I'm quite intrigued by the idea of voice chat, but I won't likely be using it much soon for 3 reasons:
1.) I have not yet invested in the hardware (small thing).
2.) If this un-scientific poll is any indication, few others seem inclined to use it, so I won't have many other people to talk to!
3.) Main reason— I'm often on SL at night when my wife in in bed asleep, and it would be rude and keep her awake.
That said, provided I'm not waking my wife, I will gladly use voice chat on any occasion where another user wishes to do the same.
I personally find the only major drawback to voice chat being that there will no longer be a written record to refer to for many communications. If I'm conducting business, I'd like it to be in text, so I can save the conversation as documentation of the business conducted.
----------
I have a recent blog post on my site that loosely relates to this. I'm going to post my own thread about it, but I might as well mention it here:
