Where IS this place where politeness is seen as weakness, and encourages disrespect and punishment? And among what age group?

That is just totally off the wall.

I've lived in many places in the U.S. (I am American), and mingled in all SORTS of socioeconomic circles. Just walk around in any major city.

Whoever this group is that views politeness as weakness is a very small group.

(sigh)... Just because you have not been there doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Doesn't matter what the age group is and it doesn't matter how large or small the group may be. You may have lived in 'many places', and you may have 'mingled' in any variety of circles... but walking around in any major city shows you nothing....NOTHING!

I can walk around the streets of my city and not see a murder happen. I can walk around my streets and not see one child smacked because they were crying. I can walk around my city streets and might not see a single dog fight..... However I can clearly hear the gunshots, and I can hear the screaming and the crying and I can hear the dogs barking and yelping in the distance. If I were to drive 30 minutes north I could show you million dollar homes where our local CEO's and sports personalties live. I can then drive you 20 minutes west and show you the spot on the sidewalk where a 15 year old girl was stabbed in the head while walking home because one of the 'young, small and socioeconomic' members agreed to do it to pass his 'initiation'. I knew her family... and grief is something most of you should pray you never have to deal with.

I don't think that soldiers need to be turned into war machines who blindly follow orders, only because they might have to kill someone. I assume every person would be able to kill if they have to defend their lifes. And no one should be taught to kill on command without thinking. Especially police and military forces should always use their own judgement, in case the wrong people gain political power someday.

I can't believe I am agreeing with Chris here ;-). But he has a point, the soldier has to be trained in a way to ensure he will follow orders. It's not only a matter of kill when your life is at risk. The soldier has to believe that his CO has a valid reason to ask him to go and (probably) get killed trying to accomplish a goal. If the soldier starts questioning the reasons behid the order, the whole army concept get lost.

In another post I said I don't understand the military mind, but I respect it.

Because my upbringing and my life experience has condidtioned me to. And in an ideal world, I guess everyone would treat each other civilly. But you can't force people to be nice to each other. We are crating a culture that is becoming more and more adverse to negative experience, and the world just isn't the utopia we want it to be. We have school districts that want to do away with the term "Fail", The "No child left behind nonsense", sports programs where no score is kept so no one loses, people in media being crucified when voicing an opinion that strays from the "acceptable", and so on. The world is a rotten place. Can we make it better? I think so. But once we do our best as an individual, all you ca do is hope the other guy will too. You can't force him. *Jeez I haven't had my coffee yet and I'm getting philosphical. Damn you, Figtree!

1) There is a difference between being nasty when it's deserved and using a blunderbuss approach.

2) Calling people "stupid" does not get them to change their behavior - it gets them pissed off and defensive. It doesn't work, so there's no reason to go there immediately - unless they ignore the polite advice, in which case "stupid" may very well apply.

I'm saying it's not the norm, as you are painting it.

small percentage of 'People' in the sense of total popluation.... fine.

You questioned someone's comment about there being areas where 'being soft' gets you beat down. Truly doesn't matter if it only makes up 2% of the nations homicide rate... Places like this do exist and in those areas the homcide rates are typically higher than the national average. Some small town in Iowa might see a murder every 20 years. Cities like mine saw 86 homicides in last year... and we aren't in the top of the spread.

I gotta agree with you there. Makes no sense whatsoever, does it?

Ever lived in Harlem, in New York City?
I too have lived in a few spots, and visited many more:

Milwaukee, WI
Charlotte, NC
Pensacola, FL
San Antonio, TX
Saginaw, MI
Spofford, NH
Albany, NY
Springfield, IL
Miami, FL
New Orleans, LA

Like Turbo Streeter pointed out...just because you don't experience something *yourself*, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Have you ever been a prisoner on Death Row? Do you think the Death Penalty is imaginary JUST because you haven't seen it enforced with your own 2 eyes? That train of thought is extremely naive.

Cairo, Egypt... Tokyo, Japan... You haven't lived everywhere in the World...does that mean that these places don't exist? Not at all. You could tell me that the existence of Chicago itself is another "lie" that I made up, and you would be wrong.

Have you ever seen an Armadillo give birth? Me neither. But they must, or they would be extinct. If we both died today without ever having born witness to the event, it would still exist.

Yep.

Coconut Koala, it's nice that you live in a nice spot, but it's only a small *piece* of this planet, not the whole. :)

Uh, that's only if you don't go outside and socialize with people. Otherwise this is pretty naive to assume. I'd like to see where you get the statistic you're referring to. What are the actual percentage points on that one?

It is actually in the nature of a lot of people (if not society as a whole) to take full advantage of another's kindness and give only as much as you can afford to lose or give with the expectation of recieving something in return. I bet you even do it and don't know!

Being hatefull is when you...well, hate someone, their "kind" or what they represent to you.

Griefing is when you're messing with someone to get some sort of reaction or otherwise to cause mischief.

These often overlap, but aren't necessarily interchangeable.

I'm proud to say I've only participated in the latter for just about all my life. I just can't get worked up over something to the point where I would actually hate someone or something.

I dunno Jumpman is so totally ridiculous it can be amusing.

Its not like theres a lot of comedy competition round here.

It helps to know Jumpman is whiter than Vanillia Ice, sort of SL's version of Malibu's most wanted.

Of course if he was less obviously silly - the things he says would actually be offensive, so Im not sure wed want that.

shut up beeyotch...i luv vanilla ice...check out any pick of me! i like to let down the top so my hair can blow too!...and i'm a lil bit mo dangerous than Malibu...square biz...

and what's wrong with being a cauc! i got hammers that pop too! bet that! beeyotch!

Okay with all the posting you've done in the last half hour you have officially broken through the "Incredibly Annoying, Attention-Seeking, Inflamatory Jack-Ass With Too Much Time On Their Hands" Barrier into the "Plucky Comic Relief That Should Be Allowed to Get Away With Things Others Wouldn't Simply for Entertainment Purposes" Zone.

A, this is a dumb argument we're having.

B, I said it existed, but that doesn't mean it's the norm.

C, I pointed out that there are age differences. I really think y'all should take that into consideration. There aren't just a whole lot of tough-talking, impolite, in your face middle-aged and older people anywhere.

(Which is probably why they got to be middle-aged and older.)

D. That bit about me being someone who takes advantage of another's kindness is just uncalled-for, plus you are wrong.

For the most part, in the U.S., there is not the sort of talk in the public venue that we get on these forums, or in a game. For one very good reason, if no other - a person isn't likely to accuse another of massive stupidity unless they want to get punched in the face, and I don't care where you are.

coco

P.S. In addition (upon reading Jumpy's "be a man" speech), some of us are female.

Again, pretty naive. I never thought St. Helens, OR was a "tough" town, but if what you're saying is true, they have gun racks in their trucks for completely different reasons than I thought!!

But if everyone was nice and kind then no one would worry about being punched in the face for calling someone stupid!

For real, though, I'm actually surprised at what you're trying to argue. I'd think you were raised Amish if it wasn't for the fact that you're on a computer most of your day!
