Will you use SL voice for the majority of your communication in world?

Simple yes / no poll.

I have to say that I will be using it pretty rarely as it would require turning off music, asking my family to be quiet, and would really undermine my ability to multi task. I generally have 5-10 IM windows open and I am not sure how that would work with Voice.

Not to mention that about 50% of the people I talk to these days seem to be ESL / using a chat translator .. which isn't suprising given the fast population growth coming from the Euro area.

But - let us know what you think!

Cheers,

Iron.

My voice is something from my first life. I'm not on SL to continue being me, so no, I won't be dragging any part of my first life into SL, voice or otherwise.

No, it just wouldn't be practical for me at the moment.

Nope, me neither. And it seems that we are a firm majority.

Why 'for the mjority of your inworld communication'? I think I won't use it at all.

Nobody asked for voice.
Nobody asked for pretty skies.

Heck, even the money alone that has been spent would have been better invested in other things, like stabilizing the asset server. Be it for the needed manpower's salary or new hardware.

No, I don't plan on using voice.

I come to SL to get away from RL for a time. As Second Life becomes more and more like First Life there is less and less reason to be in SL. Voice is just another step along that path.

Even if it's not used for the majority of my communication- it is still a nice feature to have available. =)

I suppose it's nice for those who want it but I won't be using it. I'm much more comfortable with text; I'm better able to express myself in that medium than with voice. I like to get my words all lined up before I let them go :)

No. For a variety of "Excuses" ;)
Mostly now, just to be obstinant towards those who get their panties in a bunch over people not wanting to use it. This way it removes a whole bunch of people who weren't worth my time in the first place.

PS Just for the record I am not one of the Voice is the end of the world crowd. It will be a useful feature to those that want it. Just not for me.

I may prove useful when dealing with clients in contractural matters, to lessen ambiguity, however it will still mean writing up notes of confirmation afterwards, which in itself can be presented in a bias way and would probably result in yet more writing. I see it as useful, but not overly required.

If Voice becomes widely used, I'm going to change my group tag to "Mute Blonde" :)

In light conversation it's ok. But just like iRL I wouldn't trust voice to convey detailed or technical information.

I think voice is aimed at the corporate clients LL is trying to attract. If LL can go to a company and say "You can bring your employees all over the world into a conference room and TALK as a group," the perceived value increases (even though typed text is really better for clarity and archiving.)

And once they can do it, I suppose they see no reason to not make it an option for everyone.

But I have no use for it and no interest in it. I don't plan to use it at all.

It really is not practical for me. I also have no desire to use any part of my RL Self in the grid. It seems to me that it detracts from the over-all appeal of the experience.

I think it's a good idea for those that want to use it, but it's not for me.

I think voice is aimed at the corporate clients LL is trying to attract.
LL is far more interested in attracting educational entities than corporations (ESC and others probably deal with those far, far more than LL does) and educators have been the ones whining that SL should have voice, and now they have it.

No serious business would hold a sensitive meeting in SL where typed chat is floating around unencrypted (never mind logged by LL or recordable by anyone/any prim within 20m) outside of their own corporate network, or use a voice technology that can easily be eavesdropped on.

I like it that they're going to have voice because I have a friend in SL who has a disability that makes it hard, but not impossible, for him to type. I would only use voice myself very rarely because when I've done voice chats in YIM it has almost always disturbed my husband (he thinks I'm too loud or something!) A few nights ago a friend and I used YIM while he showed me around a museum in SL and it worked out better than typing. I don't think I'd like to use voice in SL with a large group though - voice chat in YIM has always been a big challenge with more than 3 or 4 people talking at a time. One of the biggest problems is that only one person's voice can be heard at a time, so people are cutting each other off a lot or they start talking and then realize someone else has control of the stream. I don't know if SL has managed to avoid that problem because I can't get the First Look viewer to work on my computer. One unavoidable problem is that with voice chat you can't just scroll back if you miss something.

I don't think so.

I tried it on beta and found it immediately wrecked the immersive nature of SL. I was no longer Kelly Kuiper exploring this extraordinary world but Kelly (real name) talking to someone on my PC with SL as a backdrop. Subtle difference and perhaps impossible to explain to many people - certainly those outside SL.

I'm in two minds though. I do feel like having it on for gender verification; I just don't like the idea of people assuming I'm male in rl if I don't use it. On the other hand, I know that there a lot of females who will refuse to use it. Justifiably, they consider that if anyone won't talk to them because they refuse to use voice (and assume they're a guy because of that), then they're not worth talking to anyway. In using voice to verify gender, I'm possibly pandering to those people and making it more difficult for other females. Does that make sense?!

And anyway, who knows how it will all pan out. The above concerns might fail to materialise anyway.

No. I involved a lot with SL kids and have no desire to be listening to them forced to talk in adult voices.

I also have Mute Audio on a lot so the computer doesn't bother my night working husband.
