Question about Gor

I'm curious about Gor. I understand the bad side of it... and am not looking for abuse, believe me. I've searched the web for SL and Gor together, but haven't found much info at all. I did find an SL/Gor forum, and posted there, but it seems to be dead.

My question is, how can I found out about the Gor sims? What I'd like to know is, is there one where I can go without fear of being harmed?

Last night I found a Gorean Information Center, which was pretty good and informative, and had some freebie clothes.

So I put on some silks, and a man came up, started calling me "girl" and "little one" and insisted that I follow him into a city.

He was actually pretty nice, so I trotted along at his heel until my daughter came (in real life) and wanted to play cards with me, so I quit out of there.

I don't understand their rules or customs, but I got the impression that I couldn't really refuse to run along. Could I?

I know I could have said, "Dream on, Jack," and walked off. that's not what I'm asking. I want to know their customs.

Where can I find out this stuff without getting my head cut off? And find the nice sims to visit?

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : gor

The question is fine. Some peeps are extremely opposed to the idea but many are not. So it does lead to some heated arguements.

Okay, so how do I find out about pink frosted cupcakes then?

Seriously, even if it's bad, there ought to be some sort of easily accessible guide, right? Pitfalls to avoid, stuff like that?

I would definitely suggest studying up on it. It's not my thing, but if you are going to go into a RP area, you should abide by the rules and customs. That's just basic courtesy.

We had a thread awhile back about someone who went into a Gorean Sim and basically disregarded all their customs and agitated them, and then wondered why they were coming out and harrassing her. When in Rome.........

Alternately, some of the Gor Sims have observer tags you can wear that will allow you to move about undisturbed. Some also have people who will act as guides and show you around.

It's just that Gor generally leads to some open discussion and eventually some one gets huffy and it goes all over from there. Your best bet is to go, as Jerboa said, fully dressed; find yourself an Observer Tag. Ask questions and as always one should when visiting foreign lands, be very polite.

Type Gorean, not Gor into search. A whole lot of threads come up. You may have to whittle through them.

This one is a couple of weeks old, but perhaps you can contact the OP.

And each sim has it's own rules, you usually will get a notecard listing them when you tp in.

Gor is many things to many people
01-28-2009 07:36
Alex the given advice is good. I "play" a Gorean merchant and if you have questions feel free to ask me here or in-world. Most in Gor are good people and soem arent- as you will find everywhere in SL- but its key to remember its not for everyone and Gor does indeed mean different things to different people.

To learn about gor read the books it is said to be based on for a start. When I was in gor a while ago few knew much about it the slaves were princesses, they had they were restricted ( this is not so in gor) they were all not to be punished by anyone else ( this again is not got) the slaves all walk about in silks ( another things not in the books) Slaves kneeling about talking ( again slaves were always busy) FW were treated more like slaves no respect given. 3rd person speech is a OL chat thing NOT a gorean thing. Kolar is not what is around a slaves neck its a collar and they visit Earth not urth.

There are many good web sites this is one i like

It depends on the sim, but usually the landing area and the vendor area (probably the same area) are not RP areas. I would expect an information center would be the same. Well, that would be sensible, anyway. So no, you didn't have to follow him since there was no required RP.

What was said before. Find a sim with an observer tag, and roam around quietly and respectfully. If you dress as a kajira, you'll might find people strike up conversations (Masters, not other kajira).

A suggestion though. If you don't want to be bored a lot of the time, you might consider looking into becoming a panther. Basically wild dominant women who only secretly want to be enslaved. But the RP means you can fight, scheme, dramah, get caught and be dominated, escape, and repeat. The kajira appear to just kneel around most of the time, but the Panthers seem to keep things interesting. But I don't know much about being a kajira in Gor, so I could be wrong. But I do have a friend who's a Panther, and she has a lot of fun.

No, it's OK, Alix. We haven't had a Gor thread in a while.

Very basic background: SL Gorean sims are based, more or less, on the series of Gor fantasies written by John Norman. Gor is a male-dominated society. Most women (and some men) are treated as property. A female slave is a kajira, a male is a kajiru. Kajirae are trained in the arts of pleasure and service, and a skilled kajira is (or darn well ought to be) highly valued by her master.

There are some Free Women, and also some nearly-subhuman primitive tribes.

Visitors are welcome in many Gorean places. If you don't want to roleplay, don't wear silks. Dress conservatively. Ask for a visitor tag. Wearing this will designate you as "off limits" to guys looking to take slaves.

Do NOT go as a furry or nonhuman avatar. These creatures are not part of the Gorean universe, and therefore are generally not welcomed in SL Gorean areas.

If you don't diss their lifestyle/roleplay, Goreans (like most people) will be happy to talk to you.

Oh, and studying up on Gor by reading the books, while thorough, is hardly required to participate in SL Gor. And some find the books... difficult... to get through.

Hi:)

I played a Gorean Free Woman (FW). They cover up, wear veils (in general, some sims allow the to show their face). They can't show cleverage either. In return for their "cold" appearance, they can play roles as bakers, scribes, physicians - mostly any role exept warrior. They can companion a Free Man (FM) and give birth to children.

Slaves wear silks, carnisks or are just naked. They are often referred to as "beautiful" and they serve the Free. They are desired but have to obey the free, they are owned. There are no "safe words" in Gor as in BDSM sims. If you agree to play a slave, you are a slave, not a pet. Slaves can not bear children, but men solve that "problem" by freeing their slave before birth and collar her after.

Panther girls are runaway slaves. They hide in the forrests, they can use bow and sleen knife. They operate in bands and can owerpower a man. They are often harsh and proud.

This is the basis rules, but it's many diferent sims that bend the rules. You should know that some sims are "evolved" Gor. These are sims that alow female outlaws, they are more Xena the Warrior Princess - types. BTB sims, (By The Books), follow the books more strict.

There are a third form of sims - lifestylers. These are men who claim to be Dominant RL, that will dream of beeing Masters in RL, have a slave to command around. Same with women, they are submissive RL and wish that they could be slaves in RL too.

You need to figure out first what you want with Gor, only Roleplay or do you wish to feel dominated? Because the rules can be very different from sims to sims. You should also learn some basic RP rules.

The man who approached you in a Gorean info hub was talking bullshit. It's a OOC area (Out of Charachter). That means you are just a shopper there as anybody else. He could be fishing for new slaves, that don't know what OOC and IC means. IC = In Charachter.

When you go around to Roleplay sims, you are often given notecards with rules and a observer tag. Use the tag and ask questions in IM. It is more easy if you find a box of Free Woman robes. You will not be commanded to kneel by a wannabe master who has a lousy graphic card that hasn't rez'ed your observer tag for him ....;) Free Women are mostly treated with respect. A newcomer in silks get more interst from the men, looking for a new girl on their chain.

This forum is active, and I recommend you to post there: http://www.goreanforums.com/portal.php

OK, I'm female, and I do not personally do Gor RP, but I have visited their sims several times, in complete safety. So here is some basic advice. :

Gorean sims can be found by using "Gor" or "Gorean" as a search key. Virtually all Gorean sims have an "entry point" set that is "outside the walls", and where you can stop, get the free stuff and notecard info that they offer, and read and understand the cards before actually entering their RP area. Stop there, and get yourself ready before proceeding further.

1: Appear in a Human avatar only. Gor has extremely few non-Human species, and appearing there as a furry or a dragon or a robot is very out of place, and ruins their ambiance. So if you want to be treated politely, give them a little respect to for what they are trying to establish in their sim.

2: Wear an "Observer" tag. Virtually all Gor sims that I have visited have a place at the entry point where you can obtain a "titler" that will put the word "Observer" above your head. Get one, and wear it, while you initially check things out. While wearing an Observer tag, you are accepted to be "not playing by their rules" and a "Guest in the sim". Most Goreans will either talk politely to you and inform you on topics you ask about, or will, at worst, ignore you while you have the tag on. If you locate a Gorean sim that does NOT offer an Observer tag of some sort, I would not advise proceeding into the sim until you are well-versed in Gorean activities.

3: Dress appropriately. Most Gorean sims offer at least one set of free clothes suitable for males, and one set suitable for females, so you can blend in. Walking around their sims in a Star Fleet uniform is as out of place as being a Dragon.

4: Males get better treatment. In Gor RP, most males are very dominant over females. There are exceptions, such as the outlaw free women, called Panthers. But it is safe to assume that any female will be treated as inferior to any male, if playing by their rules. So if you really want to be "safe" checking out a Gorean sim, and don't want anyone hassling you, go there in a male alt or male shape, even if you're always female anywhere else.

5: Read and understand all the notecards they offer. There will, virtually always, be one or more notecard givers at the entry point, that explain the rules and customs in that sim, and often the specific scene that they are trying to establish. Get them and read them.

6: Ok, now go in, and ask your questions, trying to be respectful. You may find that what they do isn't to your taste. If so, then smile, leave, and go do something else. Simple enough. If you like what they do, learn how things work, then set yourself up appropriately and come back without the Observer tag.

The above advice applies equally well to most RP sims. If they have an entry point and notecard giver that explains rules and customs, understand what they are doing before diving in. You'll have more fun, and you won't be spoiling their fun by appearing in a very out-of-character form or manner.

Hope you have fun, whatever you end up doing.
