As a per-vert I'm far too busy camming underneath their skirt to bother looking at their profile.

I will NEVER, for the life of me, understand the appeal of camming under an avi's skirt. What on earth do you expect to see, except (most probably) an ugly pair of glitch pants that make your average pair of boxers look sexy????

Or is this just a sort of reflex that men have?

It's the excitement of what we might see!! It's the thrill of maybe seeing something we definitely shouldn't!! :D

I just had to pop back into this thread and say that I think this is definitely probably an introvert/extrovert thing. Introverts probably feel a little more reassured by knowing something about the other person before fully engaging in conversation. A few of the extroverts I know are so friendly that they talk to just about everyone they encounter (which I do find charming and sometimes try to emulate, only somewhat successfully).

Perhaps subject matter is part of it as well... I don't like to talk about superficial things very much and thus I am not the best conversationalist with absolute strangers.

That makes sense. I'm pretty extroverted, and once I wrote my profile I completely forgot about it. I was flat out astonished when someone I met recently knew my rising sign (It's on my RL tab) and knew I used to be a neko (from my yet-to-be-updated profile picture).

Obviously I don't mind being superficial. A little superficial, anyway. ;)

This someone you met recently may have been contemplating this further because of your extremely charming manners... Just a hunch ;)

LOL. Or skirt shopping.

Actually, I do (of course) have non prim skirts. And, to be honest, I laugh at myself about how very careful I am to have remembered panties when I'm wearing them. :o

So you demand active participation..?

In that case, which base would you like me to cover? Bearing in mind I'm a rookie and all.

A friend of mine has this in her profile, and I think it's applicable to this thread, while also being an example of an interesting profile entry:

From: someone
No one here made you as you are except you. We appear as we choose to portray ourselves. An avatar's details are entirely up to its creator and thus appearances in SL take on a significance even greater than in RL. We hide behind the supposed anonymity of the internet believing that there are no repercussions for our actions and taking no responsibilities. There are no levels in SL, no templates to stack and hide under to make up a "character". Intelligence and social skills show through no mater how hard you try to hide them. Your personality is stripped bare by the very machinima you believe shields you, leaving the base persona, your true nature, exposed to the rest of us.
