From: Brenda Connolly I'm not. I can't speak for you though. I see no reason why there has to be a difference in this case. 5 minutes of conversation can be a lot more informative that a profile. If you can't spare 5 minutes to say hello then I might as well have a blank profile, because you probably aren't worth my time, and it will save us both the trouble.
Good day, sir. Five minutes? Jeez, how fast is your connection/sim/home machine/interlocutor? I *wish* SL conversations moved that briskly! thing is... they don't.

From: Pserendipity Daniels I suppose that all of you who don't read profiles or think that they are important buy books without looking at the blurb, without checking who the author was, and not worrying in what genre they might be classified. Pep (I presume you read the book until you reach the point where you realise you have wasted your - apparently not very precious - time. ) PS And if you wanted to sell something you wouldn't package it - just make it a nice surprise for the customer that washing powder is in the box rather than breakfast cereal! LOL I usually read books that are recommended to me, either by another person or by a book I'm already reading. But I do give unknown books a chance, just as I do people. By the way, Socrates didn't like books. Do you know why? Because you can't talk to them. .

From: Gummi Richthofen But it won't finish that way. The idea that no information is good, and any information is bad, is just smokescreening the inevitable truth: you won't get on with everybody. A profile helps you to work out at least a sentence or two to say to these guys - and where is the harm in that?
I've been astonished, by the way, by the venomous tone here from people who don't like erudition, wither in the forum or in a profile. Seems kind of masochistic of them to parade their jealousy here in quite such an epic and sulky manner. But; that's judgements for you! I don't see venom or jealousy here. A profile is just a tool that can be used just like any other. Not everyone chooses to use every tool. I keep something in my profile becuase I recognize people use them. Nothing wrong with that. I just don't jave agreat need to read them upon first contact. Usually in time I'll look at a profile after a relationship is established.

I believe profiles are important as they give other people an idea why u are in SL and what you are looking for.
It tends to cut down on mis-understandings and hard feelings if, and when people get the wrong idea, or make judgements without getting to know people.
They also tend to weed out the people that are not really interested in you

From: Gummi Richthofen Seems kind of masochistic of them to parade their jealousy here in quite such an epic and sulky manner. Watch it now ... some of my closest friends are masochists. Actually, this is going like any other discussion you might find. Person A: I like fizzywidgets because blah. Person B: I do not like fizzywidgets because of blah. Persons D-W: yeah, what they said. Person X: Only stupid people (like or dislike) fizzywidgets! They (sux or rock)! Everyone else is just a bunch of ghey h8rz. It is human nature. Some people have a hard time with the fact that not everyone will agree on any subject. Diversity is still a foreign concept for the most part. However, life moves on and it is seldom worth getting your blood pressure up about.

Because it has so many possibilities, we each craft our own special use for it, and we get miffed when we come across people who see it another way. Like you said, human nature.

They also tend to weed out the people that are not really interested in you that would be nice if i believed everyone were really honest in explaining themselves.. they are what people want you to see of them..some are more honest than others.. i'm not saying profiles are a bad thing at all..they show things you may have in common and other basic stuff like that..but when someone starts to talk about how kind they are or how understanding or this or that..i start looking at the pictures again lol

Woah, I didn't think this was such a controversial subject. But I guess there is really more to contemplate here than I initially thought. I like profiles. I tend to be kind of exclusive about who I spend my time talking to. Maybe this is an introvert thing; I can't maintain hundreds of authentic friendships and I would rather talk to myself than talk to somebody who I think is not even slightly groovy. Sometimes if I think someone "looks" somewhat interesting, I will check their profile and that will sway me either way. Sometimes somebody might be new or look kinda indistinguishable from the masses or just have what I consider a really odd avatar, but I check their profile anyway and sometimes find out they are actually very groovy. Sometimes I will be searching for something and come upon someone's profile without having met them, and that's all I have to go on. Rare is the occasion where I find myself having a conversation before checking a profile. (Well, besides on the forums here ) Long story short, the profile helps me 1) decide whether or not to press the IM button 2) gives me something to start a conversation about if I do... So if you are looking to meet people, I don't think it can hurt to have at least a little bit of information about stuff you like or don't like on there...you don't know how many people might have passed you over otherwise based on this or other superficial reasons. (BTW if I could broadcast a profile-like thing 20 feet or so around myself in RL when I am out on the town, I would definitely do it )

Good day, sir. 5 minutes of effort in filling in a profile can be a lot more informative than a blank profile. If you can't spare 5 minutes to fill in your profile then I might as well have no conversation with you, because you probably aren't worth my time, and it will save us both the trouble. Pep (See what I did there?)

From: Mickey Vandeverre ok....so your system works....you've got all your treasures in hand....then you don't need anything in your profile, and you don't need to read any other profiles....done deal with your odds on system....so your precious time should not be a concern. Mickey, I would have thought by now that you would have realised that you don't understand what I post and/or you can't express anything sensible in response, so you are wasting everyone's time. Pep (Did I say I had "all my treasures in hand"? Try reading my post again. )

No, the discussion has gone something like this: Person A: No information about someone is better than some information in getting to know someone. Person B: No. Some information about someone is better than no information in getting to know someone. Person A: I enjoy the risks involved in talking to random people for extended periods. Person B: I prefer not to waste my time talking to people who can't be bothered to give me any information about themselves. Pep (Yes, people are different. As has been pointed out in this thread, some people enjoy having pain inflicted upon them.)

From: spinster Voom Jig, you have had lots of lovely feedback on these forums over the last few days, about who you are and how you contribute. Please try to remember that people have different ways of operating and that if somebody is quiet, it doesn't mean they are cold, or judging you, or that they a bad person. They are probably just ... quiet Yes, I completely agree. It is lovely and I am NOT being silly about that. people are really kind. I am really, really sorry to see forums ending as we know them, just as I am beginning to get to know people in a diffferent "light". But, isn't that always the case? I'm still gonna be jig-cheeky though.

I won't deign to comment on your nasty little secret you have just admitted. Pep (But I will say I heartily agree with the attitude to profiles you expressed earlier - in post 86 unless someone has started to manipulate posts so that theirs is at the virtual top of a virtual page)
