Our profiles reflect ourselves but some profiles are downright boring. I put pics in mine and use books and have done so much to make mine as interesting as possible.

Is it time for you to revise and edit your profile? Or even update the pics and the 2nd life information. Here is a chance to test out your profile with a revised "Me, Myself and I".
Write it down here and we'll be judge and jury and executioner for you. We'll correct your mistakes and keep your nose to the grindstone until we are satisfied with what you have done.

Except for the picture (the same as the one I use here) mine is blank. Is this a bad thing?

It's not a bad thing necessarily.

I . . . use books
What for? Can't you express yourself other than by using second hand thoughts?

It's more a case of not wanting to appear to be pompous and conceited. Because that's exactly what I am.

I suppose the advice "It's better to say nothing and have people think you are stupid, than to say something and confirm that you are" applies to profiles. :p

Pep (can't find a way to scare away the illiterate, using his profile ;) )

I guess I am secure enough in myself to not bother with presenting an enlightening profile for others to read. Too many pompous intellectuals, that feel they are superior simply because of their education.

Might find one of us correcting the others language skills even in a profile. Mines simple, and to the point.

Since I rarely read profiles, I don't put much effort into my own. I meet people the old fashioned way - by talking to them.

If profiles are as ineffectively done as you believe, I guess I'm not missing much. Or I'm better off, since I get a feel for the person through interaction rather than by reading a presentation.

How dare you!

This is The MyFaceSpaceBook Era. You are supposed to put your entire life story up for public view in 50 words are less, so everyone can see your most intimate thoughts and instantly decide if they want to spend their time getting to know you. *tsk, tsk.*

My profile contains what I think is a pretty efficient test. If a girl doesn't get a LOL from my RL tab, then she's not the kinda girl I be wanting to spend any time with ;)

What she said.
I don't read Twitter, either. My Facebook page is out of date and I never read blogs unless they are by people that are expert in a subject that interests me. I really don't care to delve into the minutiae of other people's lives - in SL, especially, it's their current actions and words that count, not what books they read last year or what they had for dinner.

I rarely read SL profiles unless something's said that requires further inquiry or to look at people's picks.

What is it with this current trend to paint a pretty picture of yourself and present it to the world in such excruciating detail?
I'm sure some shrink has a blog entry on that
:D

I read profiles mostly for RP info, otherwise I don't look at them much, at least initially. Like you said, a lot of people dress up their profiles with pretty ptose, and platitudes, and turn out to be batshit insane. My favorites are the "Hi, I love meeting people and making friends." then a few lines later "If you fuck with me, I will come to your house and eat your cat and murder your dog."

I wonder that myself. There are some things about people I DONT want to know. I don't get the urge people have to tell strangers everything about their lives.

Anyway my profile doesn't say much and I use my picks to teleport to my favorite photo pose shops and other places I frequent every day. If someone wants to get to know me,they can talk to me.

I have to use this! Although I might reverse it: there is better eating on a dog.

I think I have changed my profile exactly once since I started. I don't tend to read them, unless something about someone I am talking to piques my interest, or seems odd. And invariably, I find the list of groups and the picks more telling than the profile anyway.

One thing about profiles that HAS struck me, almost from day 1, though: the number of people (overwhelmingly women) who have added some variant of "Please remember that there is a real person behind my avatar, with real feelings."

The sheer prevalence of that particular sentiment taught me a great deal about SL early on.
