You google the store name in quotes.

Yay! I never thought of doing that. I just tried it and found I was blogged during the home expo. :)

as promised a before and after using the templates I purchased.

(I don't have pics of all the things I messed around with, but suffice to say, templates have a lot more options than just simple add color)

(this shows a basic recolor, then using photoshop and layers, and photoshop and other layer options)
in photoshop it allows (obviously) many more ways to do things with them (including changing wrinkles, and adding embellishments, etc)

This has opened my eyes to premade templates, feels more like using premade sculpties, I still put a lot of myself and my own ideas/work into it, but it gives me more tools to work with.

*removed pictures as I am cleaning out my storage, and did not want to leave a broken link*

(I love how the green and purple one came out)

Amar - you could try the list of radio and TV stations listed in the wiki as broadcasting from SL

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Second_Life_Radio_&_TV

I know that SLCN TV has an advertising plan, and even a home redecorating show (Meta Makeover, I believe). Last I checked the rates were pretty steep for my budget, but it might be good exposure.

Thanks! worth a peek at least!

Rha they do look lovely :)

For me though they are too close to the original or me to consider using. With my luck i would have some nutter accuse me of stealing someone elses work cos we have the same dress shading, winkles etc.

You did mention however that the creator sends the PSD files as well, so if that is the case i could definatly see the potentialwith being able to reshape necklines etc to fit me.

Does it include the skirt??

God I hate skirts, probably cos i dont wear many dresses in SL as is so making them isnt really my thing, though i did make one this week i rather love it is so pretty.

Anywy just a small critique on them Rha the skirts on the darker two seem a little dark overall? The light blue one matches perfectly though (and is my favourite, very pretty)

the skirts do not come with them (the basic skirt texture does but you have to make the skirt)

that was another thing, recoloring in SL makes matching the skirt extremely hard
whereas in photoshop it is very much less difficult

(yes she does says she will send the psd files, but I have yet to get mine) so at this point only working with what I have)
That was also one of my fears, people saying I stole it from so and so, but.. being it is widely available, I can just point them the location and say you can get it too.

I debated long and hard on this... because I was like you described and only wanted to use my own from scratch, but after doing this for 3 years I am starting to burn out, and now it is kinda fun using something like this and seeing what I can do with it.

The purple/green one I was wearing when a friend dropped in and was like... ohhh I love that, and I told her about this thread and my personal challenge to myself in using a premade template.
she was like oh I buy those things, but am clueless still on how to use them LOL

I have mixed feelings about it at this time... I may end up selling what I make from them, or I may not, not sure yet. If I do sell the, I am not going to hide the fact I used a premade template, that will actually be part of the description, I do not wish to be deceptive.

I am now seeing though, how and why folks use them, it is just another tool when used right, much like when eloh released her psd files, I love those things, they have taught me a lot, and I did make and sell skins using those files as part of the skin, and as a learning tool. (but not just simply recoloring them) which I will also not just recolor these clothing ones either.

I am waiting for the psd files to see just what can be done further with those.

(I am learning to accept them as another tool, just like sculpties, I mean, how much can one do to change a sculpty LOL)

sorry czari but I was not quite sure what the post meant, so did not respond. I tend to be like that, instead of showing I do not understand, I tend to step back and wait for someone else to say something.
how is an item considered a tip? do you mean tips like tip jar tips?
I thought you mean like.. here is a tip on how to do such and such, kind of tip.

(as for the getting the feeling your input is no longer wanted, I go through that too, there have been posts that I have made that were ignored, but I plugged away anyway)

not getting rid of me that easy, and I hope not getting rid of you that easy too!

Czari - people just chat around - not everyone comments on every body's stuff- don't take it personally!

Come on -we all have valuable input here - even if not for the ones here right now, Yes the forums are being murdered (Best move ever LL! ) But while we are here we share- don't take that tack please- it is unwarranted and very unlike you.

@Czari: As a consumer, I was very impressed when I bought our Christmas Tree from you, that you sent us a matching wreath to go with it. It is something I haven't forgotten, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with for this year.

I think everyone's input has merit, I apologize if I seem to have not responded to anyone, I am hugely busy and my visits to the forums pretty much consist of hit and run lately....I read the post about the tip and some others but had no time to respond to any earlier, I just read and ran :P

I want to say one thing regarding the templates, E is correct about being careful to deviate well from the purchased templates...I saw a post in the XSSL forums with a designer complaining that someone had 'stolen' their work...and found another designer did in fact have the exact same thing out...but at the bottom of it all was that both of them had purchased and used the same template with no deviation (except color) and it was pointed out to the complaining designer that if they were going to purchase templates rather than draw their own, they should expect to see other designers selling the same things as them.

I don't really worry about what tools other people use, but I have to say that I think you are more than capable of producing something just as good (or better) without using a template.

I don't think it is a matter of thinking I can not produce something of equal quality, I have proven that to myself many times over than I am capable

For me it is more of a boredom, it gives me something different to do, to see what I can do with a premade item to make it look much different than it already is.
The above examples are by no means a finished product, (I want to add more wrinkles and such to them) and of course if I decided to put patterns instead of just solid colors, that would change them up drastically, however no matter what, because it is based on a premade template, I know it will be similar regardless of what I do, short of deleting and making my own LOL.

I am learning it is no different than using sculpts that I purchase, and I see plenty of shoes (I mainly purchased shoe sculpts) out there, even bigger names, using purchased sculpt maps.
It is what one does with it that makes the difference.

As for someone complaining that someone else copied their work, when they themselves purchased the templates... well... isn't that kinda... dumb?

*shrug*
not defending my decision to purchase a template and not saying my work is not as good, I just needed a change, and this is making it fun again, something I needed badly.

Edited to add: one of the things I do not like about the above template is the belly highlight, makes the belly look popped out hehe

so one thing I will be doing is toning that down, and adding wrinkles there, which will change the look somewhat

I do like the gathering at the breast area, which is always one of the biggest challenges I faced making things.

Will I buy another template? probably not, this one will keep me busy for a long time LOL

Tha completely get the challenge aspect of it :)

I hope youget the PSD's soon as I think that would give you a whole new scope to work with and the ability to really change up the dress and make it your own. right now I would say i think they are reallya little too cloe to the original for me personally to be comfortable with selling, but really it comes down to your own judgement.

I would love to see you turn that into a summer style dress with a satin style sash and a summer light pastelly parttnered fabric for the dress.

reading my mind on the pattern and having the sash different and not patterned

I am still waiting for the psd's and I hope I am not disappointed

as for selling them as they are in the pics, I thought about it and figured why not?
After all I want to get back the money I paid for them, and it is no different than using textures that someone made or sculpts (heck I picked up a little wrap sculpt that I included in my package for flipflops, as well as a beach bag) and all I did was apply texture to those.. no changes other than that.

I guess it does come down to personal comfort zone and I used to feel just like you are describing, but ya know what... I paid for them, they are mine now, and if I make something from them and decide to sell them, it doesn't make me a bad person and it is no different than selling something made from sculpts or something using textures picked up elsewhere.

(heck I see stuff out there that when I see it I do wonder if the creator used a kit, because by golly it sure resembles something seen as a kit)

*shrug*

(why do I feel like I have to defend my decision?)

that was why I asked, for some weird reason it just felt like I was defending myself for trying them out and for considering selling them...

oh well, next time I just won't say anything and do whatever I feel like doing LOL (after all, I am the only one I need to answer to when I decide to use premade anythings)

maybe it is just because the thread is old and we might be running out of ideas...

I think we all fellike that at times, not jsut in this thread but in life in general but if we let it take over then only we lose out. Czari your contributions are wanted and are respected. Everyones here is. I love the input that each of you brings andthe different ideas, even when we disagree it is good to see the other side to it all...

thisthread is old but I disagree we are all out of ideas, each of us is learning about ourselves and our business through this proces and there are always new things to learn. Hellin the past week or so we have discussed :

DSN drop boxes
the use of templates
IMing people who purchased and thanking them andoffering them roup invites
The giving of random gifts or gifts as tips.

And probably others but thats justwhat came to mind off the top of my head.

I am still learning things and am lerning new ways to market my products.

Actually i rented from a sim called Mayfair which is part of a set of sims called the London sims the other day. just wanted to say ithink ithas been my BEST experience so far in setting up a satelite store. The manager who atentive, took the time to find out what i needed, gave me extra prims for free when i asked abut changing out the floor texture (to cover the prims for rezzing a floor) also chatted to the other people on the sim to come see what i was settingthem up, spoke up about my products and how great they were (he is actually also a cutomer) and said they really should shop here. He also sent a notice to th group with a notecard i made up etc. I made great sales for the first day n a place and have had oads of lm clicks

Hrm.

I think a recap of as much as is possible in this thread might be a good idea. Way back when it started, and for quite a while, I maintained an online document of links and ideas and store reviews from the thread, but what with one thing and another that slid out from under my radar. I dread going back through almost 250 pages of this thread to summarise, but it might be a good idea to begin, especially with the possible changes in the forums that may come about in the future from LL. Even if I just manage to archive it as a text file somewhere, that would be useful.

This thread will soon be one year old (wow!) Let's rev it up again, shall we?

How about a renewed store-visiting endeavour to begin with, whereby those of us that are willing can ask for other vendors in this thread to check out our stores and offer comments (either publicly or privately)? Many of us have remodelled and changed a lot since the initial days of this thread and there are many people new to it that didn't get a chance at the original store visits.

Ok so i decided to actually go through this thred and bega to write everything down. I am onlyon page 4 and have three pages of notes

This should be interesteding, but it is fairly detailed so far

From: someone

General Tips:

- Place a pick for your store in your profile (even if you just sell on XStreet have the URL in a pick)
- Use the signature feature on any SL forum you use and include at least your SLURL for your store and your Xstreet URL (a picture signature is even better)

Classifeds:
- Set up a Classifed for your in world store (or mall spot if you are just starting out)
- Always use an odd number (the minimum for a classified is L$50, if you change it to just L$51 you jump ahead of everyone set at L%40, this is the same for all odd numbers)

Signage and Ads:
- Always turn on Full Bright for textures on your store ads to make them easy to see no matter what time it is in SL
- Think about an Ad template to make doing ads easy and to offer continuity for your store (if having the same information in the same places on all ads
- Make sure it has information about permissions, layers it is on, number of prims etc etc

Malls and What to Look for:
- Traffic isn’t everything
- The cheapest spots aren’t always the best
- Spend time in the mall and watch the traffic, do they brows or TP in and out? Are they only coming for the club event? Are they bots?
- Talk to the manager, ask about how they run the place, what the do to encourage people to shop, what events they have
- Look for mall spots on their own plot, you can set the keywords and put it into the places search as well as control the music (important if this is your only store)
- There are some free mall spaces (Monkey Mall and Baby Monkey is one, Rhia at Primal Arts also offers limited spaces)

Your Own Plot:
- Consider your own Plot for land
- Premium membership costs L$72 a year, $60 os which you get back in L$300 stipends every week, making the cost of tier on a 512 plot of land $12 US a year for 117 prims.
- You ca also consider renting a 512 plot of land (these can be picked up for around L$300 a week)

Donating Items:
- This can be a good way to build up potential new customers.
- Consider handing out random items to people you meet as well as friends
- Speak to the owner of a club you enjoy going to about donating items, giftcards or even L$ to the club in exchange for advertising at events.

New Releases:
- Release new and better items regularly
- Around Once a Week Tends to be good

Blogs:

XStreet:
- Probably the biggest cheapest marketing tool in SL.
- Costs noting to add your items, so add them
- Yes I mean ALL of them
- The more you have on there the more chance of people seeing what you make
- Don’t forget to include a good descrption (that includes your SLURL to your in world store, good ads, information about prims, information about permissions, information about other colours it may be available in, layers it is avaliable on)

Places To Advertise New Releases:

General:
- SL Forums (New Products Section)
- XStreet Forums (New Products Section)
- SLUniverse (SL Shopper Section)
- Your Own Blog

Fashion Only:
- Fashion consolidated (In World Group L$1000 cost to send notices)
- Sexy Shoppers (In world Group L$500 to send notices)

Home and Garden:

Places to Advertise Gifts/Dollarbies:

General:
- Fabulously Lucky Chairs (MM Boards and Lucky Chairs only)

Fashion:
- FreeStyle (In World Group)
- Fabulously Free in SL ( In World Group)
- The Freebie Telegraph (In World Group)

House and Garden:
- Freestyle Home and Garden
-

Blogs:
- Having your own blog and updating it regulary is a great way to keep your customers or potential customers up to date with your latest new releases.
- Also link up your blog to other blogs you enjoy reading and consider asking them to link up your blog with theirs too

Cross Marketing:
- Consider joining up with other people to cross expose your creations
- You could have small spaces in each others stores to show off your items
- Or give each other copies of your items to use in ads with a notecard in the outfit containing information about the other pieces including a LM to their stores
- You could also have a LM giver to their store in yours
- Make sure your items compliment each other (ie matching up a tiny avatar maker with a clothing maker wont work… but a clothing maker and a shoe designer would be great)

Keywords:
- Effective Keywords for your in world store are very important in being found in search
- Always give the title a good desciptive name (eg. ‘Renee Top’ is not as good as ‘Retro Sytle Satin Halterneck Top – Renee’)
- Continue the description in the description field of your selling prim (eg, flowery material casual silky top on all clothing layers vintage 1940’s style with pearl buttons) These descriptors are important, use as many as possible
- Assess your keywords in the land search, pick the best keywords which give a good overall description of your plot. Try alternative words like apparel as opposed to clothing and keep and eye on search
- This is also important in classifeds.
- Try searching a keyword you intend to add to your classified to see whether it will show on the first few pages (check wht they paid versus what you intend to pay that will tell you) if it wont rank consider if you can use a different descriptor.
- Consider looking up keywords in other languages and adding them to your classifeds and descriptions (french, germen and Japanese are good ones)

Store Logos and Branding:
- Take the time to create a logo and a good store name
- Get help from graphically gifted friends if need be or pay someone
- Branding is important, if you can add elements of your logo to your ads etc it will help to reinforce brand recognition
- Use your store logos as part of banner ads for websites and blogs but don’t have them as the only aspect, include your creations I those ads to showcase what you make

Sorry for the longness of it but i figured id put it here so that pepel can add to it and illhappily putit together into a comprehensive organisation of the information we have collected and probably do a series of notecards we can distribute in world

Some more fro page 5 and this relates to some stuff we were discussing this week on blogs (please give me general SL blogs and house and garden blogs cos i dont rreally look at them, so any suggestions are great)

From: someone

Advertising in SL Magazines:
- This is far from cheap but can be affective as these are often passed on and shared between friends.
- Many stores have kiosks for magazines, pop over and pick up some and flip through and find some that might suit you
- Make sure your advertisement has your logo as well as good pictures of what you sell.
- Consider hiring a photographer and graphic artist to do the ad shots for you
-
Magazines to Advertise in:

General:
- Linden Lifestyles
-

Fashion:
- Second Style
- Aspire

Home and Garden:

Review Packs and Bloggers:
- consider making up a folder very few months with your latest release and favourite items and dropping them on some blogers you enjoy reading
- Take the time to look at their style and customize your picks for items to them or drop them a giftcard (manual ones work just as well as a scripted system)
- Take note of their favourite colour or skin tones or hair colours etc
- Check the blog to see if they have special review pack requirements (some blogs never take review items)

Groups for your Store:
- Have a group for your store whether you use an in world group or a mailing system which sends IMs nd objects
- Consider using a subscribing system to save on groups
- Subscribomatic and Hippo are both free if your group has under 500 members
- The ArtiZan system is another option which is more manual (L$1900 once off cost for the deluxe system unlimited group members though and the ability to run several groups off notecards) https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=678446

If it's any help (I didn't have time to find the link before leaving for work this morning) my original Doc is still available:

Great recap E-

Skell's list is linked in from my blog as well.

I am all for another round of visitations to our stores- mine has changed- A LOT! Including nature of goods :)

Personaly i know i have not been devoting as much effort as needed to market- my fault- it's just i get sidetracked. I want the momentum but sometimes I wd rather coast and enjoy my SL. I thnk that too will let me bring in some fresh perspectives and newness to what I do. Recently I had a passing interest in some steampunk stuff which lead to some new houses and goodies - those are selling nicely on XStreet - so I thank my inspiration of the time.

These little breaks serve to refresh us- for me anyway, i am always looking for the next thing- i think i am a little ADD :D
