Wow yes! Great observation! :)

I actually can't stand it when people text me rather than talking when they are communicating by phone. I purchased my phone with the intention of talking. I did not buy a phone looking for a typewriter or IM unit.

I have several friends that refuse to call and talk on the phone, preferring to text me over and over again to my dismay. Even after I have told them repeatedly that I do not want to receive 30 text alerts for a three sentence conversation, they persist. So I ignore all text messaging, and as a result, have not had conversations with some people in some time.

Point is, I expect to *talk* on the phone. I don't want phone text shoved down my throat just because everybody's doing it. If I wanted to read conversations I would use e-mail. Similarly, if I wanted to voice chat I would pick up the phone.

Me too. I refuse to answer text messages. (Well when I had a cell phone anyway, mine went belly up last month). And when I'm with someone else who is constantly texting, I find it very rude.

An interesting dynamic in this debate is the belief (by a few) that one side of the argument is "The Truth" while the opposing view is merely opinion.

As I aid earlier, initially we shut off Voice sim-wide in the new private residential sim that I live in. We polled our residents, and 2/3 of the households in the sim, including the sim owner, immediately agreed they wanted nothing to do with Voice, as did several members in the remaining household who we spoke to.

But one couple in the third household, which owns about 1/3 of the sim, recently decided they did want Voice. Or to be specific, a master wants his his slave to use it when doing RP with him. So Voice is now on, but they will use a private parcel channel for Voice, not the Estate channel, so it's restricted to only their parcel. They also know that no one else in the sim will be using Voice, so I doubt it will cause any friction. It will just be for private use between that couple.

Haven't tried it myself yet, but it's on at my club for those who want to use it. Haven't had any problems or complaints.

It's enabled on our land for our club but I don't plan on using it myself as the norm.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about gaming (7 years + on EverQuest before dropping it for SL) is the peace and solitude of being able to play and not have to talk, talk, talk. I tried Teamspeak and Ventrilo while on EQ and it was stupid. People talked about things that had nothing at all to do with EQ. What's the fun in that? Why play a game if RL is going to be brought into it constantly? Like someone said in another post...I hear enough voice in RL. I do love to be in google voice with my SL husband though but we talk about SL.

Anyway, for now, it's on for those who enjoy it. Haven't received any complaints about it yet. No problems that I know of so far. I haven't downloaded it yet because of things I've read about the interface.

As far as those business owners thinking customers will try to talk to them, aren't we non-voicers going to have the red dot of rebellion over our heads so everyone will know to bug off and leave us alone?

I honestly don't think voicers are going to mind texting too. If SL does decide to ditch this voice idea, people who really want it for their clubs and other businesses or for a group of friends can just get Teamspeak or Ventrilo and can talk wherever they want, not just in some sims and not in others. Big businesses who have in-game meetings too can do the same. There are lots of multi-user chat programs out there.

I have to add that If I had business land or land that had tenants I would enable it there and let people choose whether to use it or not.

Hi Sue

As someone who occasionally attends events at Sue's club, I am happy to read this. I am not anti-voice. But one of my major concerns about voice is that I frequent a lot of dance clubs and live SL music events (I'm at one right now, a Reggae singer as I play hookie from work) and I don't want to hear the voice chatter drown out the music.

Hope to see you at another one of your events soon Sue. I've just kind of turned into this live SL music groupie.

Hey Jessica!

Come on over any time :)!
Just FYI, you can turn down the voice volume to where you don't hear it at all, which allows you to enjoy the music even if someone happens to talk. I think that LL did give us many options with the various volume sliders. Also, you can temporarily turn off voice in Preferences. Then, you would appear as a non-voice Avatar, and you would not hear any of the voice chat.

On another note, I think that voice will be very useful in educational events. Already, just to teach friends how to do something, it has been much easier than to type a bunch of instructions.

Not me i'm mean mainly cause my land serves two purposes and I have my "house" at the far end and I dont want to hear the nattering not to mention that if they are using voice and i'm not (which im' not its not even enabled so that people can tell i truly am not using it) they might be asking me questions using the voice client and I would have no way of knowing it since I have mine disabled in my client. So after thinking about it and in order not to get yelled at for ignoring questions that were spoken I turned it off on the land. I get yelled at once a week anyhow by one guy or another who's widget didn't get into his inventory and I didn't respond fast enough to his request cause I had left the keyboard and gone for a drink of water or to the washroom!

Yeah, I think that's a fantastic use of voice, so long as it doesn't exclude residents. Just this morning I was really wishing I had fished my headset out of the garage, because I had to step a tenant through a bunch of land settings. Took about an hour to do what would have just been a few minutes in voice.

How will you handle the cost of voise when its passed on:
1. Pick the cost up yourself?
2. Pass it on to all residents?
3. Pass it on to that couple?
