It'll be handy for when I am building with my business partners. No need to stop working on something to type. From what I've seen in the voice beta (And I wonder sometimes how many people whining about voice have checked it out in the beta) it's not horribly annoying. Somebody talks too loud you can turn their volume down individually.

I did go and try it and I'm still whining. THough I can see some pracitcal applications like you mentioned, or still didn't like it at all. Not only chatter from everywhere but every cough, scratch, and sneeze byt the speakers or in the backround came through my speakers. Talk about TMI.

Well, I haven't a microphone, but I've seen the YouTube demos, and yes, they were horribly annoying just to watch. I can only imagine what they'd be like to use.

It is a personal preference, of course. Some people have difficulty expressing themselves in a written format, like to walk about with a cell phone glued to their ear (or with those earplug things in), and will leave a television set on in a room, even if they aren't really watching it. No doubt, such people will take to voice like peanut butter to shag carpet.

However, for the rest of us, there is a real concern that it will become the defacto means of communication, much as happened in the game "There". So, despite the fact that yes, voice is optional, this is hardly a spurious concern.

I have checked it out. It is indeed terribly annoying and having to waste the time to lower how loud the individual chatters sound or muting people is annoying as well.

Well anyone wants to make an assumption about me because I am not using voice in SL may gat a note card with my Guild Vent server info and a one time invitation to come chat with me there, as I will likely not be using SL voice because I AM there. ;)

That being said, any talk about voice killing roleplay is totally uncalled for. It has not destroyed roleplay for my GW Roleplay guild, it won't here. Saying it will it just silly and makes me wonder what kind of roleplayers these people truly are.

That simply put is my comments on voice. Likely not on topic but there none the less.

From what I've seen on YouTube, and done in SL .... TEAMSPEAK, not SL Voice Chat is the way ta go for conferences, or whatever. TeamSpeak runs smooth & you get better sound quality while you use SL, especially in Windowed Mode.

If you just wanna walk up and chat w/ strangers, without havin a TeamSpeak server set up, then SL Voice it is

On 5 different computers, 4 different ISP's in 6 different houses I have never ever been able to get TeamSpeak to work. God I hate that program.

Yes, it's me and I usually get snotty replies (don't know why ...) BUT will we HAVE to use voice? Some of us have very distinctive voices that we REALLY don't want to use online. No I am not a man. BUT I have a real job where my voice is heard by many. I don't want anyone to say "hey, isn't that ... ? " I live on my own but I HATE speaking to "myself". I use my voice for my job and like to be quiet and just type. I can think of ten thoiusand reasons why I DON'T want to use voice. Please (if you know) confirm that VOICE will not be compulsory. I can't think of a worse thing to have on a system like SL where privacy and the ability to just listen to music is possible - oh, sorry, Privacy in SL is kinda thing of the past ... now we can actually be recorded saying intimate things to relative strangers; wow, we really are getting cleaned up!

Look on the bright side. When Linden Lab try to add voice, pretty much every resident knows they'll break 100 other things, voice won't work how they planned (Although going back 3 years, voice was never going to be implemeted, nice selling out to corps LL) and from the response so far, it's gonna be 50/50 who actually uses it (if it works, which I think we all know, it wont- they'll be too many issues and most residents will turn it off)

What Youtube videos? I'd like to see this.

As for the chat bubbles, I turned them on once - and was INSTANTLY reminded of what I hated about There: Watching people type. Literally WATCHING every little letter and backspace as they typed.

Very unlike speaking. Whereas already-formed text is quite a bit like speaking, because it is quite a bit like reading, where the characters do seem to "talk."

And when I get onto SL or any online game, I guess you could say I'm there to read a story. Not to be at a real-life party.

I'm not shy in the least - but being outgoing carries a different sort of burden. It means when you are talking, you are putting your all into it, your personality, everything - and I don't come to SL to do that much work, lol.

If I miss out on any good socializing due to not having voice turned on, well, so be it. I'd still prefer quiet.

well I was in situations where everyone aruond me tried to get me to use voice in games. I tried once broke three headsets and so i tried a regular mic and then everyone in the house complained about the noise. I gave up I hated it. I dont anticipate using voice anytime soon unless its some very special occasion and even then because i have this habit of breaking headsets because I am jumping up and down from teh computer every 10 seconds due to real life happenings each voice session will be very pricey :)

So voice is not manditory and I have no intention of spending another 50 bucks and another and another. No matter what I do i break the head sets and its not practical to use regular speakers and a mic and even then I have squashed several mics (they were cheaper though..). So due to lifestyle and what is happening in the surrounding area I wont be using voice.

I also found sitting and listening to people during that 3 days of attempting to fit in and use voice very annoying I hated it.

The only issue was that because so many groups were very heavy into using voice I often got left out because no one would be watching the text area for my chat. I still managed to get along but people got annoyed at having to type instructions for me which is why everyone tried to get me to use the voice chat server. Well I tried and hated it and it was expensive ...

Only if you enjoy sitting before your PC with headphones and microphone on. If anyone likes this kind of stuff they may want to apply for a job at their local telephone company. It really has no place in your Second Life unless you want to make Second Life your First Life.

erm I like the idea of voice and I am offended by your comment

just because you do not like the idea doesn't give you the right to tellme it has no place in MY second life

some ppl might find it hard to type therefor voice is a good choice in that situation, yet again others might just like the human touch of hearing another person's voice

so ... yes... voice has a place in MY second life, it may not have a place for it in yours...

hehe my typing is horrible and its not all lazy (although I have been accused of it over and over again) age has given me early arthritis and my fingers are numb and some days you would swear I am smashing the keyboard with my fists. I still prefer to type instead of use voice chat even if i do mangle the typing. I find it harder to carry on a continuous banter on a microphone (its very tiring) and then there is that issue with mangling headsets (very expensive)

I"ve turned into a clutz over time but I still will be typing...

Gibberish, LOL...I'll check out that Ventrilo...

Thinkerer's Machinima Team, ActUp & a few other SL Machinima teams work through TeamSpeak every single day w/ no problems, so I guess it must be hardware problems for you two :D :P

ummm .. boys playing girls .. and girls playing boys? I thought we were all aware of that.

I was surprised to see this thread this morning considering there was a thread on voice yesterday I posted my opinion to. C'est la vie

You dont have to use voice, but if you dont you have something to hide. I can see this coming from here. And if I do perverts will be drawn to my voice like flies to honey. Thank you so very much Lindens, I have always wished to be sexually harrased in my own living room. I mean when some drunken eastern european propositions me in broken english in text it has kinda a comic aspect. When they do it in voice that is something else entirely, and I am here to play a game and not be harassed. So I see it as a no win situation. :(

You don't have to use voice, unless you are trying to talk to a group of people who are using it, because it is almost impossible to mesh a typed conversation with a voice one. Because of this, there's a worry that it could "virally" spread around the grid via peer pressure.

I've tried using voice before and for some reason no matter what I've done and what headset I've tried my system hates them one and all... I've been in guilds for MMO's that use voice and I've always just ended up listening to their talking and I'd type my replies... Which works ok, but you have to listen to them bitch and moan how it would be 'so much easier' if I just bought a 'good headset' and talked to them... The only setting I've ever got to work correctly with voice was in a couple FPS titles before I rebuilt my computer a couple years back... And I only really used that for warnings and commands, I'm not a very chatty person when I'm with people I only vaguely know... So yes I'm worried that people will try to force me (yet again) to talk to them... & I to want no part in that... It also makes it really hard to stay up late playing SL when my SO is here. :P

Oh god horrible thought... Having to listen to people moan into a microphone as they cyber in front of everyone else... I think I'm gonna be sick...

Not to mention people like this french guy the other day who would just not leave me alone... My french is not good enough to tell him I'm not interested, and I really don't want to have to listen to a constant stream of french spoken to me... In fact a lot of native speakers will speak their language much faster than a non-native speaker making it even harder to understand some people... I don't speak Spanish (but I know a bit as some things are very similar to French which I took in HS) and even what little I do know is lost in the sheer speed of their words when it's said... Typed words don't have a 'speed' to them other than how fast you can read them...

ANyways... That's my $2L on the issue...

I do most of my SL work in the middle of the night, and nobody in this house would appreciate this, both listening and talking. Besides, I don't need my work trance music spoiled by someone's grainy, low quality mic blaring their family's domestic dispute in background while I'm trying to nurse a migraine away. This goes especially if I have to decipher someone's thick accent, or they turned on some kind of robot voice for translated text.

Seriously, I like being tranced out in a build. I don't need someone flying up to me and suddenly "BZZZKBLAGHH HURRPH BBBFHGHGH KBZZZZZT???"

I suspect the subset of the SL population that does NOT use voice will be no small minority. Anybody see the price on the "deeply" discounted headsets? 80 USD! Hate to see what full retail is.

There are plenty of valid reasons why people will not use voice. Anybody who judges you for not doing so isn't worthy of your time.

I won't be using it:

Don't want to disturb the rest of the household.

Don't want to wear an uncomfortable headset and constantly take off and put on. And eventually crush with my ass when I forget where I left it.

Don't want to spend more money on this metaverse/business platform/game/addiction.

Don't want to listen to others jabber. With type-chat people tend to say just what needs to be said. With voice, people will add lots of "ums," and "uhhs' and "you knows." (BTW. Has anyone counted the number of times Condi Rice uses "um" in a minute?)

Plus, I'm a castrato with a distinctly masculine, lyric soprano, basso profundo voice. It could get confusing.
