Do We HAVE To Use Voice??

Yes, it's me and I usually get snotty replies (don't know why ...) BUT will we HAVE to use voice? Some of us have very distinctive voices that we REALLY don't want to use online. No I am not a man. BUT I have a real job where my voice is heard by many. I don't want anyone to say "hey, isn't that ... ? " I live on my own but I HATE speaking to "myself". I use my voice for my job and like to be quiet and just type. I can think of ten thoiusand reasons why I DON'T want to use voice. Please (if you know) confirm that VOICE will not be compulsory. I can't think of a worse thing to have on a system like SL where privacy and the ability to just listen to music is possible - oh, sorry, Privacy in SL is kinda thing of the past ... now we can actually be recorded saying intimate things to relative strangers; wow, we really are getting cleaned up!

Per the release notes and all testing that I've experianced, Voice will NOT be mandatory.

It will be by choice of avatar and by choice of land. Land owners must allow for Vocie for it to be used on thier plot if I've read and understood everything.

And I agree. Vocie my be nice for some things, like meetings and such, but for my everyday SL life, I just want text. Call me old fashioned ^.~

I completely agree! I have a hard enough time having conversations now with numerous people, i'll have a real problem when i can't scroll back through the conversation to remind myself who said what.

I expect there will be some peer pressure, of variable intensity based on the place and the who.

There will be some slurs thrown about and some assumptions made.

Kind of like now reguarding skype just on a much broader scale.

But no .. no one has to use voice.

Only if you enjoy sitting before your PC with headphones and microphone on. If anyone likes this kind of stuff they may want to apply for a job at their local telephone company. It really has no place in your Second Life unless you want to make Second Life your First Life.

Take a break from reality.

I can`t say im here to socialize and make friends, I don`t really see myself using voice but i dunno.

I do. Only because my headset is totally better sounding that my speakers.

As far as having to use voice. They keep saying it's optional. Apparently nobody ever reads that part.

It's a personal quirk, But i'm Very shy in RL (Not that you would guess from my posts here) I avoid crowds, and i simply Loathe the Telephone. I own one strictly out of necesity, but i avoid answering it, and speaking on it as much as possible. i prefer talking in Text, I find it more calming, and Very liberating.
Nope, no voice for this girl.

Angel.

I honestly look for voice to go the way of the old chat bubbles. Everyone screamed for it and it became an instant annoyance. Does anyone use the chat bubbles? I did for 5 mins and havent had them back on since. ANNOYING voice will go down the same road.

People asked for chat bubbles?

You will have some that like voice, some that don't. It is just another change in the long histories of SL changes.

Im not completely sure how it works. Like i have not read anything on it. But I wonder how close you have to be to hear ppl and if it interferes with the music, etc.

I know only some SIMs will have the ability to even use it.

Im not looking fwd to hearing ppl chit chat so Im guessing/hoping theres an option to "mute all voice chat" or whatnot.

I can see it as buffing up nonsense cliques even more than they already are. Its kind of sad that ppl have to come online for that stuff but whatever.

Yes many that came from "There" at that time were pushing strongly for it :)

I don't think so.
They are on by default, on a fresh install, aren't they? I suspect many people quit SL before they figure out how to turn the annoying things off.

No, I did a complete install when I returned and they were off. I doubt if many new people even realize it's an option :)

It'll be handy for when I am building with my business partners. No need to stop working on something to type. From what I've seen in the voice beta (And I wonder sometimes how many people whining about voice have checked it out in the beta) it's not horribly annoying. Somebody talks too loud you can turn their volume down individually.

Oh thank goodness.

I have to reset so many things after a fresh install I can't remember them all.

Did you delete your settings.xml file, which I think occurs when you do an uninstall?

Doing an install without doing an uninstall first doesn't restore your settings to default.

I'm tempted to do an uninstall just to see.

Must resist urge to verify.

Add me to the old-fashioned list... I don't plan to use voice either. I much prefer text; I find it much easier to express myself that way. Plus, call me weird, but I just don't think people really need to know what my real voice sounds like.

I can see using voice with close friends, maybe, but most of the time, no. It sort of breaks the illusion for me, if that makes sense. I tried it out on the test grid and found it a bit hard to tell who was speaking if I was in a crowd.

I have checked it out on beta. I do agree it can be useful at times. Im not whining about it ether Im simply stating my opinion, as you are :)
