I raised a support ticket and was told:

"We're piloting programs for our top landowners, beginning with estates greater than 250 full-prim regions"

So why not announce this?

The poor stay poor, the rich get rich. That's how it goes, everybody knows.

LL response was

" What you are seeing is the first stages of a new program we are rolling out as a test. We're piloting programs for our top landowners, beginning with estates greater than 250 full-prim regions. Should this test be successful, we will be extending the pilot to the next tier of landowners this Summer. Look forward to more details coming in July!"
I swear they are digging their grave at an exponentially accelerating pace.

So OF COURSE they will do what they can for those people. That's where LL makes most of its income, land tier. Everything else, premium memberships, upload fees, classifieds, are much less than land.
As I pointed out in response to the same comment on the blog, the only reason Adam can pay that almost-a-million-per-year is because of all the individuals and small businesses who pay HIM for the land.

I'm not sure I see a problem with top tier advertisements appearing on the MOTD. The opportunity to advertise on such valuable space should be available to all though. Also there should be an option to opt-out.

Therein lies the issue with using it for advertising - as soon as that happens people will opt-out (either explicitly or not bothering to read it and if there isn't an option to opt out in the official viewer third party viewer will add such an ability etc.), at which point it becomes useless for what it should be used for - important announcement from LL (such as announcements about policy changes etc. ).

MOTD is already useless when they can go for months without even bothering to use it for something as serious as Zindra, and then when they do say something it doesn't even last 24 hours before something else has taken its place.

I do. I absolutely fucking do.

The MOTD should not be ads. It should not be links to Torley's latest watermeloncholia. It should not be blurbs inflating the New Media Consortium gasbag.

The MOTD needs to be reserved for announcements we really need to know. Even before this latest dilution, the MOTD became dangerously ignore-worthy. With this they've made it pure spam. Morons.

Now that everyone will ignore the MOTD always without fail, the only way they can actually announce any real information is by have a special click-thru dialog--as with when the ToS gets fresh lawyer grease and must be re-agreed.

If LL want to make money out of ads, they should display them to NPIOFs during TPs.

The Lab could always just send out a global instant message upon log-in to replace the formerly useful MOTD. That would greatly increase the chance of people actually reading it.

Can you spot the flaw in this plan?

I know, they should spam landowners and XSL merchants!

(but, Dr Evil, that already happened)

If you make NPIOFs watch ads, they probably won't buy from them, but the ads might be sufficiently annoying to get them to put PIOF. Therefore it's worthwhile. :)

With a paltry 32 (soon to be 53) sims, I am not big enough to qualify for MOTD. But it's something to aspire to. :D That said, I think the login screen should show graphics instead of text, and LL announcements using a specific, bold format - that way they won't get lost in a sea of ads.

As if teleporting isn't misery enough of late :D Might as well go and make a cup of tea while you're connecting to region, and thus NPIOFs would miss the ads anyway.

TP adverts are somewhat useless as people who are annoyed will eventually seek out clients that allow them to totally remove the TP window like i do with the GreenLife viewer.

There is some mention of Adam Zaius in this thread: /108/f7/77722/11.html#post805283/108/f7/77722/11.html#post805283 .

That was interesting - if only to see the relatively small number of residents who are actually still posting here. With a few exceptions (Keiki, Aimee, Siggy), I can't help wondering how many of the currently rare posters are still active in-world?

You out there, Hank?

And I don't approve of commercials of any description. Business-oriented residents appear to thrive without the support of the Linden clan. I'd be extremely 'disenchanted' if I knew for sure that some breadhead were influencing the fact that we're stuck with a crap avatar mesh for instance.

Been reading this thread for a bit but have not had chance to respond until now.

I think the whole debacle sucks big time not only because I can totally understand the outrage of all those who didn't get feted on this but also because now we are being force fed advertising upon login.

How many times have we told people, that shit like this needs to be opt-in. There is not even an opt out of seeing this.

Guess its time to start building my own versions of the viewer to rip those MOTD msgs out completely.

GreenLife viewer lets you eliminate the MOTD login screen and never see that crap again.

I do not see TP screens or Login screens. I like it that way..especially now that the MOTD has become useless tripe.

The usual disingenuous reply.

'it is only logical we start with our largest land owners'...

I mean, couldn't they have randomly chosen several smaller estates to see if the MOTD hijack adverts brought them any increased biz?

After all, it was the small people that made SL big, but i guess LL only recognizes the contributions of its millionaires.

Wow...gosh, i am just gob-smacked by this.

Thanks that will be very helpful for the short term. Longer term however, I might as well see if I can figure out how to change and rebuild the damn thing to see if I can alter some of the things that they keep wanting to screw up every release anyway.

Like I posted in other thread, I dont see a problem with it.

Those customers get higher treatment which is the norm with most all companies.

I used to work for DirecTV sattelite doing level 2 tech support. Certain customers that called had VIP tag on their account. They got preferential treatment and you stayed on that phone till problem was fixed, offered freebies, etc to keep them happy.

Normal customers you had a time limit how long to stay on the line, and after trying to fix problem 2 or 3 times you would have to connect them to a technician to come to their house they usually had to pay for unless they paid for the maintenance plan.

Was cool getting VIP calls though, I got to speak to few celebs, Mel Gibson, Christina Ricci, and Helen Hunt were the 3 I got to speak to, also all Hughes upper management were VIP's. The celebs would have 10-15 receivers and paying 300+ per month for tv, so they got VIP status.

Same with most every large company has VIP customers they get preferential treatment. So I see no problem with it really, since it's the normal behavior of corporations and has been the norm since corps were first formed.

Same goes for computer repair store, our corp customers were VIP's we would go to their business to fix pc problems. Normal customers had to bring their pc's in to us to be fixed. So VIP treatment is the norm and not nothing abnormal.
