I'm biased, but I'd say Robin Sojourner.

There's a gajillion out there:

Adam n Eve
Tete a Pied
Celestial Studios
RaC
Sin Skins
Naughty
Nomine
Deviant Kitties
::Max::

and I know I'm missing all the little designers out there. Try to find some "undiscovered" shops; you'll get a better variety. I wouldn't say that the above are necessarily the BEST; they're probably some of the more popular.

Well... searching new products...

...gives you all these brand new skins. I might like one, you might like another, it's all very subjective as to what is the best skin.

You'll have better luck if you describe what you look for in a skin :).

Drawn vs "realistic"
Tan options (ghotic, normal, tanned, dark, etc)
Mod vs no-mod
Shading
"Grooming" or "bits" (if you happen to care about that)

Also keep in mind that your skin and shape go hand-in-hand when it comes to how you look.

I'd agree with this. I own several different skins, but the ones that consistently look best with my shape are RaC. I have 3 of their packs and love them all! Cestial Studios makes nice skins, and they look really beautiful on some people, but I tried demos and they just didn't look as nice with my shape. You just have go grab demos wherever you can, and then compare. It's the only way to really tell, and never buy a skin without trying a demo first.

I'll go with Celestial studios too. That's what I have - it cost me L$1000 and it's worth it - before that I had their freebie Malibu skin, which is also pretty good.

I have a slim athletic figure that is not too curvacious and the CS skins seem to go well with that shape.

My av is quite curvy and they're my favorites too....as evidenced by the fact that I own all the Charmed and *almost* all of the Vogue in my preferred skin tone. ;)

Also, try Cake, Nora Entice, Lovey, and Artilleri skins.

Actually I find most skins have faaaaaar too much make-up for my liking, eventually settled on a skin from CryoGen for the face alone.

Gala Skins!!!!!

I have fair, porcelain skin RL and wanted an AV with that as well. However, so many AVs in SL look like they have spent way too much time in a tanning booth (for my taste). Even the skins called "fair" or "light" in the designers I searched before finding Gala were "still" too dark for me, or else too pink or orangeish.

And, wanted "fair" not "Goth white." Fortunately I met someone very early in my SL whose skin was just what I was looking for and she took me to Gala.

There were demos for all the different makeup looks, except the one I was interested in. I sent an IM to the designer asking if she had a demo of it and next thing I knew, she sent the SKIN, not a demo to me. And it is a 1000L skin!

Great skins and AWESOME customer service!

vogue skins with freckles and smoky eyes from celestial studios looks amazing on my shape but when i see the skin on other avatars i dont think they look that great - of course different shapes have different effects on skins. but mostly people dont know how to create shapes very well and they underestimate how important shape is. i also own a few RaC skins that i never wear and naughty skins. Well i liked the athletic pale naughty skins best and they still look ok but im definately over it. And the newer naughty skins? yuck. i do like the cake skins but they are not very realistic.

Gala skins are really nice but look horrible on my shape. oh well.

airbrushed skins:
heh every skin I own is from Nomine, I happened to run into Munchflower (the owner/designer of Nomine) back when I was a newbie, we hung out a little, I had no clue who she was, and poof a free skin.... I've bought more than a few since then, and I've yet to find many that looked better...

Photo-realistic skins:
that noted I nearly had my mind changed over a year ago when "Second Skins" was doing their method of modding the character files on the pc.... gorgeous stuff, but the prices, oye.... they do photosourced stuff now, and it's quite nice, but customization to me is a pain, and expensive.... needs a few default options
IMHO

and I've only one gripe... is this the year of the bubble butt/breast or what? seems every artist has taken to shading these parts like cartoon balloons this year.... what happened to the heart shaped rear, and non-implant breasts?...if I wanted to fulfill silicone fantasies in SL, why would I want it to LOOK like silicone?! (ok so there's a market for that to but still)

Somehow I wound up lucky - my freebie shape of unknown provenance, my short white cut from Tami McCoy, and my very pale Pure Slate from Celestial have worked out really well. Very much my own look, very pleased with it.

Exotica.

I love their X2-Fusion line. Makeup is done nicely. Dressed up is dressed up without being whored up ^.^

Plus one of the few places I've found that have teh pale, freckled skin done right for us redheads *grins*

Oh, the Tuli ones look nice (although I think she's working on an updated version right now) and Minnu has gotten some good reviews on the fashion blogs. I also just saw these in New Products:

/195/96/218171/1.html#post1725971
/195/8e/216450/1.html#post1715754

I may have to try on some demos. :)

I'm not personally a fan of realistic skins for my av, but there's no denying that Namssor Daguerre's (Second Skin Labs) skins are works of art.

Most skins look like they have makeup applied with a trowel but I finally found a nice normal natural looking one at Tuli.

IMO Skin Within makes top quality photo realism style skins. I particularly like that fact they have many ethnic skins to choose from.

Of course as you can see from the replies, everyone has their favourites so the best thing is to get out there and start trying on demos :)

Bottom line, there is no one "Best" skin, but rather many choices from very skilled designers. Viva diversity.

X2 Hyperfusion for me :) Exotica are fab.

The freckles always get comments, and the nyte makeup range is good, I am thinking abut treating myself to an extra casual set soon.

L$4000 - they aren't cheap, but damn they are good - I don't want to change it!
