Today Stage 18 at Le Tour De France was a 40 km (25 miles) Individual Time Trial with one, not insignificant, climb. Fabian Cancellera, who wore the overall leader's Yellow Jersey in week 1 of the Tour is thought by many to be the world's best time trialist. He was so careful to be rested for today that he came in dead last on yesterday's mountain stage. Alberto Contador, the current Yellow-wearing Tour leader worked hard enough yesterday to get the same time as the stage winner. In an individual time trial the rider in last place overall goes first and races against the clock. They leave in reverse order of rank in 2 and later 3 minute intervals. First place rider, Alberto Contador went last. For a much more entertaining version of the whole Tour story go here: http://www.versus.com/graphicnovel Of the 180 riders who started the Tour in Paris, 158 are left. Some were lost to injury or sickness and probably some were disqualified for reaching the finish line too long after the stage winner.

Just looked it up: the last time a Frenchman won the Tour de France was in far-off 1985. They must be burning!

Responding to several posts from 7, Amara, Treasure, and others on talking with family and friends about SL. I had similar problems when I first got into the internet or "bulletin boards" as we called the networks way back when. They all thought, "why not just call people?" I approach the SL discussions as a three dimensional interactive internet in which other people are present and can respond to you in real time. Building a house is not much different than web page design when you look at it like that. It did backfire on my Facebook page when I described the Forum Tour of Homes not too long ago as "I've just spent several hours in front of my computer greeting people who visited my two art galleries in an on line 3d virtual world (yes THAT 3d virtual world) and I'm pleasantly exhausted and now I can't walk. " Someone responded, "Cool. Post a link." Well what could I do? Post the SURL? Post a link to the main SL web page? I mean, are there still that many people who haven't heard of SL? I have no trouble talking to my family about it. They have rolled their eyes at me all my life, but I was a science fiction fan long before it was so prevalent, I was a Celtic music fan long before that started to become popular, I was an electronic music fan long before it became the norm. My family has learned not to poo-poo things I am interested in. .

French riders usually win at least a couple of stages each year, and sometimes hold the lead and wear the yellow for a few days. The French press was always pretty negative about Lance Armstrong but the fans seemed to warm up to him over the years and now everyone is saying that his return is very popular.

From: 3Ring Binder wow. so interesting. so, what are Alberto Contador's odds of improving his overall score with this front start? Today he improved his time over everyone else and I'd say odds are Contador will not lose his lead and will win the Tour. Tomorrow is the kind of rolling hills stage that could well see a breakaway succeeding and someone from low in the overall standings taking the glory at the finish line. Possibly the peloton will stay together and the sprinters will battle it out at the end for the win. Either way Contador and the riders who are still a threat to him will stay together, none of their teams would allow a rival to attack. The toughest mountain stage of 2009 is on Saturday. Andy Schleck, or Bradley Wiggins might get the better of him then or even one of his teammates, Lance Armstrong or Andreas Klöden. But Contador has proven himself to be the strongest in the mountains so far. Sunday they will all role into Paris together and the sprinters will have a wild race to win the final stage in the last laps around the Champs-Élysées. By then the overall winner will have been established and he and his team would be able to chase back anyone who tried to snatch his victory away. By the way Contador is one of only 5 men to have one all three Grand Tours (Italy, France and Spain).

From: Claire Silverspar Oh my god. I really do wonder what goes through some peoples heads when they do stuff like this. /me shakes head. i can't tell you how many people use pennies behind breakers to make connections. and guess what? insurance doesn't cover the damage when the fire was caused in this manner. this, however, pushes the envelope to new edges. that's so not even funny. if i was at someone's house and saw that i'd run out and never come back. STOOOPID!

I think it would have been priceless to post a slurl and see if anyone followed thru the whole process and ended up in your gallery with no idea they were headed into SL.
