My sister came to have lunch with me today. She is the sort who can't tolerate silence. Last time we had lunch together she asked me, "Can you talk for a while? I need to eat."
I didn't have much to say, but I dragged out what there was of news from work. Then I launched into my problems building (in SL), and told her how I'd bungled my house by pulling the walls down from upstairs and not noticing how these two pieces met over the front door, etc. etc.
She listend and even asked questions. I drew on a napkin to clarify things.
Then, when she saw I'd finished, she said, "Can I see that?" meaning the napkin with my diagrams.
"Sure," I said and handed it to her.
She immediately balled it up and cleaned the table with it.
The two of us began laughing like idiots but I had to explain to her what we were laughing about. "It's like you took my drawing and blew your nose in it."
"I didn't blow my nose in it!"
Which set us off again. We got carried away, laughing at nothing. I almost made her late for her appointment.

I found this online game. You "think of someone real but dead (preferably someone fairly well-known, rather than your Aunt Eulalie or something), and Doris Stokes will attempt to work out who you're pretending to be." It surprised me. http://theweekly.co.uk/4301/cooee_loves/index.cgi.

. I really fail to see the amusing part of this interaction- i would have been deeply offended that she thought so little of what I had tried to share- which is probably why i seldom talk to anyone about anything of substance and am so mindful of who really sees beyond the facade.

I guess you had to be there. She really was listening - asked questions, laughed in the right places. Her use of the scribbled-on napkin was just reflex. She'd spilled something on the table right in front of her and it was the last napkin left. It happened in a flash. I was astonished, then burst out laughing. It wasn't like I was baring my soul or anything. .

The thing with this sister is that we both laugh a lot. Last time we had lunch we were given these HUGE glasses of water. We were sitting at a tiny table and were terribly thirsty, BUT we both kept saying things that were hysterically funny. So we had to be SUPER careful about sipping the water - we didn't want to spray each other.

Which is why I really don't share much of my passion for SL. Have seen a lot of put downs and offensive reactions; from mere pooh-poohing, to incredulous 'you've got to be kidding, you are too smart for this' kind of comments. I've done this for so long now, that the last time someone asked me 'What is Second Life'? my mind went blank. I don't want to share it. It sounds stupid to the uninitiated. It's important to me, and it's special and I don't know how to get that across. To those more respectful, I have no problem discussing SL, but not to those who I know don't get it and never will (like my husband). A friend of mine (rl/sl friend) hired another friend, who we both originally met in SL, to do some rl computer work for her. In return, my friend would teach her to build, in SL. This exchange of skills was received with such incredulity in rl that my friend stopped telling people. They simply did not believe her, that someone's rl computer skills could be exchanged for learning to build in sl. You learn, sometimes, to just shut the hell up, don't you? lol I have, anyway.

/me groans Oh you guys! I'm sorry that stuff happened to you, but this wasn't like that. She is actually the only one in my family (INCLUDING my other sister who is in SL) with whom I *can* talk about SL. I should have told you all I was talking with her about my job. From: someone Edited to add: She got caught in the rain and was soaked, if that's any consolation. .

From: Chris Norse That is very true Pep. But if the guys that drop in are asshats, they will have to deal with me. With an attitude like that I'm not surprised that there seems always to be lots more women than men at the Hangout. Pep (When I am there, anyway; although *thinks* perhaps it's me that attracts the women and scares away the guys? )

Though I also understand how it could strike chords in folks who are disappointed at not being able to share their SLs very freely. /me drops by Seven's house and retextures an inside wall with a BIG picture of Elvis, runs away giggling...

From: Treasure Ballinger Thanks for passing me my plate, looks great. Today is my last day before a weeks vacation in Palm Springs. Damian can you dial it down some, there, it's really over the top with the heat thing. My husband is being an asshat about me taking my laptop to Palm Springs, afraid I'll be sitting on SL all day. I wouldn't do that, we'll be with a bunch of family members, I know I have to be social. /me cringes. Still, if I have a quiet moment or 3, would be nice to just slip inworld for a few and take a deep breath..........this issue is still on the table, wish me luck. Good luck Treasure and have a wonderful vacation.

From: Jerboa Haystack Speaking of hair, Skell. Maybe you can offer ideas. You've seen my normal ponytail? From TM? I would love to find something similar but loose. Have any ideas? My mind went totally blank when I tried to imagine anything better than this.
