From: Maureen Boccaccio OK...caught up now. Some sustenance to kick start the day, or keep you going: Thanks for breakfast Mo. It is particularly appreciated this morning, as our refrigerator is kaput, for the most part (barely keeping cool, freezer defrosting) Repair person will not be here until tomorrow since landlord had no service contract in place. If he had, they could have come yesterday. This means, I will be throwing out at the least, $200 worth of food which includes my prized lobster shells and broth leftover from last week which I'd frozen for later use. GRRRR. As for other stuff, I wonder what will happen with the party today? Here is a direct quote posted sometime over the evening, from Soft Linden that I lifted off of his Twitter feed: "Power outage #3 coming. This datacenter is green because it's powered by FAIL." Threadies, this does NOT sound very promising

Happy Father's Day!
06-21-2009 07:27
Good morning & Happy Sunday! Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there and to the moms who play the dad roles as well. Here's an oldie... My Father My Father When I was: Four years old: My daddy can do anything. When I was: Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot. When I was: Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad. When I was: Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything. When I was: 10 years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were sure different. When I was: 12 years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood. When I was: 14 years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad. He is so old-fashioned. When I was: 21 years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date. When I was: 25 years old: Dad knows about it, but then he should, because he has been around so long. When I was: 30 years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he's had a lot of experience. When I was: 35 years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad. When I was: 40 years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so wise. When I was: 50 years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was. I could have learned a lot from him. By: Ann Landers

It may be Father's Day but . . .
Today is also the longest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere). Happy Solstice to everyone. Yay!
[Edit: Ok I'll get this right eventually. Happy summer soltice to those of us in the northern hemisphere, and happy winter solstice to those of us in the southern hemisphere. So confusing to us nordocentric cultures. Yeah - I just made that word up.]

. I hope so too Lil. As for other things, group chat still seems borked. However, Ghosty just discovered if you activate your group tag, it does seem to work. Strange, but thought I'd get the word out. Everyone might want to test this for themselves.

Well, it would not be the first time that something really odd helps to fix a problem, so I will definitely give that a try -- and continue to pass the word myself.

YAY Rhonda!
Thanks for the cell phone recommendations, but I am also someone who won't patronize WalMart. my current phone is a Nokia 615i and I like it fine.I'll probably just keep it till it dies. I really don't need the bells and whistles, Bluetooth mp3 and such. I can't see getting rid of it just becuase it isn't "new". Much the same reasoning why I am typing this on a 5 year old computer, I guess.
Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's in the thread, and to the Dad's of the threadists.

Thanks for that Zena, it really touched me hard. I'm 50 and my father (and mom) has been gone for several years. Thankfully for me, I learned how wise he was long before he passed but I sure could use him for advice now and then. Happy Father's Day to all who have that role. Enjoy your day!

From: Weston Graves The Cocteau Twins!
I grew up in the 70's and was heavily into progressive rock -- you know all that airy fairy cosmic music that sometimes sounded more like the mating rituals of boron eating Rigellian land mantas in 13/8 time than like music. I HATED it when the 80's came along with all the punk and alternative back-to-basics lackadaisical musicianship garbage.
Then someone played the Cocteau Twins Treasure album for me (especially the song Ivo) and all my preconceived notions changed! I bought everything I could by them and moved from there to other 4AD artists like Dead Can Dance, Xmal Deutschland and others, and then on to other artists making weird beautiful music on into the present day. But it was The Cocteau Twins that pulled me out of the 70's.
I know Elizabeth Frazier had done some interesting things lately - including parts of the soundtrack to the Lord of the Rings movies, but I'll have to check out Robin Guthrie's solo work. Thanks for the tip. You'll be glad to know he's kept the same jangling reverb guitar sound that ran through much of the Cocteau's work. Another tip you might like is Harold Budd; he did some work with various CT members a while back, most notably "The Moon and the Melodies", and he's collaborated with Guthrie several times. Edit: And if you haven't already, you *really* need to check out what Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance is doing lately. Not just soundtracks (ie: Gladiator) but her other work. "The Silver Tree" is little short of astonishing, a soundtrack to a non-existent movie.

From: someone When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years. Mark Twain This is always one of the days I miss my Dad the most. I adored the man from the start, I chersished any opportunity to spend time with him. I'm sure pat of it was becuase of his work, anytime he left the house , it was possible we'd never see him again, but luckily, he made it through to enjoy some retirement before passing 5 years ago.

Father's Day always hits me a bit just because I never had one around for very long. I went out of my way to make that be different for my children. Even after my divorce, I made sure the kids spent about half their time with their dad and I never said anything negative about him in front of them.

From: Feral Mistwalker DISCLAIMER: I sell cel phones (by the sea shore) for a living, but I don't get commission so I'm honest. But, I love selling so I'm going to go into salesperson mode for a moment LOL
Seriously, check out WM before you go to the corporate stores, free == free there (not free + tax on full retail, ugh) also their free phones are the same ones that corporate stores sell for $80+.
For Verizon, if you want a basic phone with good sound, check out the Motorola 755. It's got a rubber surface (no slip, no scratches), camera + mp3 and comes with a decent Motorola bluetooth headset. Best of all, 100% free at WM. i'll be looking for advice from you come October.
