Another hello from the Canaries. We were walking along one of the main shopping avenues today and came across a couple of interesting signs.

First we turned around and saw this one:

Then a bit farther and we found this one (a Burger King on the ground floor, a lap dance and strip club on the middle floor, and then a Christian Centre on the top floor):

Grab a bite, wander up a flight of stairs to get a lap dance and then proceed on upstairs to pray for the girls.

The only thing missing is some sort of political office :)

At least current marriages will still stand, not much consolation I know.
I can understand the sentiment and agree, but the residents of the state made their choice and the referendum didn't pass. That's how it should be, in my opinion, the voters should be making these decisions, not a centralized government. Prop 8 has been a nasty contentious affair out there, and I would not have voted for it personally, but I agree with the process of leaving things like this up to the voters.

Checks and balances, Brenda!

It was the *state* supreme court, not federal - if that's what you were thinking.

I realized that, but my thought still stands. Issues like this should be decided by referendum in my opinion.

I actually agree with , of all people Jesse Ventura on the issue. He said recently that marriage should be taken out of the purview of Government, and be soley the concern of whatever church the participants belong to. The Governmnet should recognize Civil Unions for all and leave marriage to the churches and their particular doctrines.

Lil's pictures of the Canarys look like Second Life. A brothel, a Christian center, a Eurodisco, and a tattoo shop! :p

Here are some pics of the trip to Mt Rainier yesterday. I didn't get any of the actual mountain because it was obscured by clouds (bummer).

The Tattoosh peaks:

A glacial valley:

The snow - look how much of it there still is!

Here's a pic of Rainier from a distance:

It may go all the way to the Federal Supreme Court.

I personally believe that gay couples should be able to marry, but I have mixed feelings on this particular issue. I do firmly believe in the right of the people to decide what they do and do not want, but sometimes it does seem more likely that gays will only get their rights via the courts the way blacks did.

What she said. Jesse is pretty good on most issues. And the ones he isn't good on, you still at least know where he stands. No weasel words from him.

Prop 8 did pass. The voters (after a barrage of Mormon funded ads) decided to outlaw equal rights for gays. Since this was obviously wrong the voters decision was appealed to the state supreme court. Which let us down.

I remember the first days same sex marriage was legal here. So many pictures of happy couples... Thank goodness it hasn't been taken away from them, at least.

I couldn't agree more. And civil unions should have nothing to do with sex. For example, if two spinster sisters are sharing their old age in the house left to them by their parents the one who lives the longest should not have to lose her home because she can't afford the inheritance tax on her sister's half. Any two (or maybe more) people should be able to be life partners who can act as next of kin to one another and so on.

The trouble with voting on things like this is that it makes the majority feel as if they are right to suppress anyone who is different from them.

My error on saying it didn't pass. And I understand on the strong anti lobby, that is a whole different problem that needs to be addressed. But that again points to the idea of taking "Marriage" out of Governenment oversight.Let the Chruches define what marriage is for their followers. Otherwise, a couple should have the right to engage in a Civil Union no matter what their gender or orientation may be, without descrimination.
